The Haybine was really a game changer for cutting hay when it came out. It does have some breakdowns from time to time but can generally be repaired back to 100% good operation.

Back in the 70s my father really admired the NH haybines, but they were the price equivalent of buying a super-car back then. We got by with an AC WD mounted sickle mower for the good hay and a big flail mower for the weedy "construction erosion" market hay fields that was used before silt fence. A brush hog is great for pushing the edges of a field back to the fences and regaining acres the shrubs try taking over.

That old Allis on the haybine did a great job. My old Massey still does well for my small firewood business. Plus they are easy to work on with no computer crap on them lol. Take care

And we love hearing from you! This is the reason why we do it! To preserve agriculture history and to hopefully make some people smile that used to run these machines! Cheers friend

When I used to cut hay, I ran clockwise around the field keeping the tractor out of the fence and trees. Then turned around counter clockwise and drove where I had just cut knowing that I wouldn’t be hitting anything. One more time to clockwise and cut to the middle of the field.

The key with old equipment is have backups where you can immediately switch over to get the current job done, like getting the hay in before the rain, then repair what happened between jobs. The old equipment is inexpensive enough to pay cash for the main and backup and still be money ahead on the down payment for the latest 'gotta have' new thing. With new, banks want their debt payments when it rains and snows and the equipment sits not making you anything. And the new stuff breaks down too! Family friend bought a new tractor and was hit with a ten thousand dollar repair and weeks down at a backlogged shop -- fortunately he still had his backup old tractor to get stuff done.

You absolutely nailed it! I have a minimal investment with multiple units that increase my productivity when I have extra operators and reliability if I have failures

We always made the first or "opening" round with the tractor at the outside edge of the field. That way, the crop that got knocked down by the wheels was on the edge where the crop was often less good to start with due to trees, brush, fence line, or whatever.

I often wondered why some people did it that way , makes perfect sense. Wouldn’t be the first time I picked up a tree limb on the first pass lol

@ontariovintagetractor I start a hay field that way too, I do it so I don't hit any hidden fallen branches with my haybine .

We constantly walk our tree line , so I’m not to worried about it. This comes from using the 5100R the I don’t want to bash through the trees along the fence line and just became habit. $2500 haybine vs $130,000 tractor

@@ontariovintagetractor I walk our tree lines too, but we are on top of a drumlin and winds get pretty bad.
