It's been a while! While this is not my usual model railroad fare, I thought it might be good to share some miniature painting techniques to expand one's repertoire. Looking outside of the genres we are comfortable with can help us improve our skills across the board. In this episode, I paint a 3D Printed Pirate Bust by David Ostman, using an advanced skin technique based on the work of Chris Clayton. How did I do?

So what is your favourite modelling genre outside of your "normal" field?
If my normal field is model railroading then I guess building and painting WWII vehicles and repainting Xwing TMG minis are things that I dabble in.
welcome back, been missing videos from this channel
So have I. It's been a while, and probably worthwhile to revisit some of my techniques.
I just got a new airbrush. I am also printing 3d kits and n scale people in house here now. (filament though) It's been while since I have said hello John. I hope you are well. I am about to watch this now, as I need to learn some airbrush techniques from you. It's great to see you! Brian
So happy to see another video! It’s been too long.
It has! Life got very busy for me, but this seemed to be a good one to get back out there.
Hi JC, many thanks for your splendid videos over the years.
It is sad to see that you havent posted for quite a while (again), I just hope that you and your family are fine and nothing bad has happened.
That is my main concern, as much as I'd love to see you back, producing more content.
You videos have been inspiring, I came across it via your "From loop to layout" series, and then fell even more in love with the other videos, for example on weathering and such.
I wish you a great time and I really do hope to see you back here.

I'm okay, I'm just not able to produce new content at the moment! I'm continuing to model, but mostly non-train stuff, as I have to keep portability in mind. I've recently discovered an excellent way to paint yellow, for example, which may be worthwhile sharing, but it is on distinctly non-train-related models.
@@JCsRiptrack Happy New Year and all the best to you and your loved ones. Glad to hear you being ok. Thanks for all the work you did here on youtube, you have been a real big inspiration for me. Seriously.
looks great!
I was getting worried about you considering how long it's been since your last post, glad to see you back at it. You've got to be my favorite weathering channel, not only do you show what you do but you actually explain why you do it that way and I can think with making the techniques my own then.
Awesome 🚂❤️😎👍
Thanks JC. Good to see your posting. Quite a while ago you suggested reviewing techniques from other modelling areas. I have been using your advice and been building in other disciplines (Warhammer, aircraft, sci-Fi (Bandia star wars), war vehicles, and Gundam figures). I will be looking forward to seeing more layout video.
Well this one is different indeed. Nonetheless its great to have you back on utube John ;) looking forward to the next surprise. Kind regards
It's good to be back producing some videos, even if it isn't my usual train fare. I have a few video topics that could use a bit of updating and revising.
What happened to John? I haven't seen any new videos from him
I'm still around. I haven't been able to produce more videos lately.
@@JCsRiptrack good to hear from you again, John. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Great video, as always JC! Now, I just have to figure out how to do this in HO scale. I am thinking a very tiny airbrush and a high magnification OptiVisor. 😁
I do have unused footage of passenger miniatures that I painted for an HO Scale passenger car. I could do something with that :)
@@JCsRiptrack That would be great to see!
Have you experimented with different types of 3D printing? I have a filament 3D printer and have been considering getting a resin printer. Haven't pulled the pin yet.
Where did you go? It’s been a while, I miss your highly informative videos!
I was thinking the same thing
Where did you find Chris Clayton technique?
It's buried on the net. Do a search for "Chris Clayton, Hush" and you may find it. The original hosting site is long gone. "Hush" was a bust that Clayton sculpted and painted of a futuristic female soldier in power armour. Everything on that model was utterly fantastic, but the skin in particular stood out. My version with this pirate is just a pale imitation, but I learned a lot from trying it.
John have u ever painted steel mill cars how do u go about it help alan darch
What was the time frame for this project?
There's a couple of answers to that. In all, it represented about 6-7 hours of painting time, not including letting time for some steps to dry. However, there were a few months between some of the steps, especially the skin and everything else. I got the skin done, but it took a while for me to come up with a colour scheme that I liked. Then I stumbled across a picture of Aidan Turner from the period drama "Poldark" and that broke the creative logjam :)
I don't know if you're painting here in the way he's looking at you it seems like it was really freaked me out!!!
Hi there great video if u have a chance look at one of 3 video im working with the Distress Oxide u could get them at hobby lobby im learning I thought I could share it with u
