    Veni, veni Emmanuel;
    Captivum solve Israel,
    Qui gemit in exilio,
    Privatus Dei Filio.
    Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuel,
    Nascetur pro te, Israel!
    Veni, veni, O Oriens;
    Solare nos adveniens,
    Noctis depelle nebulas,
    Dirasque noctis tenebras.
    Veni, Clavis Davidica!
    Regna reclude caelica;
    Fac iter tutum superum,
    Et claude vias inferum.
    Veni, veni Adonai!
    Qui populo in Sinai,
    Legem dedisti vertice,
    In maiestate gloriae.

    I listened to this all the way to work this morning. At one point I could barely see because my eyes welled up with tears.
    This is just purely beautiful. Such a wondrous way to explain the importance and purpose of the First Advent, the coming of the Christ!
    All honor and power to Jesus! Now and forever!

      Same here, so good.
      Something about this is somehow both more solemn and more hopeful than the regular English version. Simply a perfect Advent hymn. It inspires that disposition of preparation that we too often forget should apply to Advent as much as it does for Lent.

    No one sings polyphony better, For that matter, no one sings anything better. Sublime perfection of well-matched voices topped by the exquisite, dulcet tones of the best countertenor in the world, David Hurley. Just fabulous!

      All Gregorion chant has this effect on me especially if heard in a large echoing church. Sister Mary Patrick taught us to think of the waves of the sea, unde maris, I think she called it, as we sang.

    • @ToddSF

      Or, to use the poetic 1851 translation by John Mason Neale:
      O come, O come, Emmanuel,
      And ransom captive Israel,
      That mourns in lonely exile here,
      Until the Son of God appear.
      Rejoice! rejoice! Emmanuel
      Shall come to thee, O Israel!

    • @linuxlover55
      @linuxlover55 7 лет назад +1

      Yes, well, I was never one for poetic license in translation. :P

    • @ToddSF
      @ToddSF 7 лет назад +1

      Jay Nelsestuen -- In the old days, there was the sexist expression: "Translations are like women, if they are beautiful they are not faithful, and if they are faithful they are not beautiful." Not a nice analogy as to women, but the principle expressed about translations of poetry is true. I have some respect for translations that have the correct rhyme scheme and rhythm to be sung to the music in question yet are faithful enough to convey the meaning. Not easy to do, but it can be done sometimes.

    • @linuxlover55
      @linuxlover55 7 лет назад +1

      Yes, it can. And JM Neale did a decent job. I just hadn't seen the literal translation posted yet, so I popped it in the combox and sent it off. There are some nuances that are missed in the poetic translation. :)
