I love cellos, something magical about this instrument, especially when one can play it like this. An instrument of the soul. No better way to express the meaning of Christmas. I wish the world would settle down and stop hating and killing and realize that we are all one in this vast universe. We are spinning out of control, it is like a tornado, the only way out is exploding. It is so much easier to love one another and get along, it takes so little effort. We are our own demise. If everyone would put positive thoughts out in the universe, we could turn this world around. Peace.
+Peggy Sinclair I find this a bit humorous as I just got home from a Judo session and we just had the lesson demonstrating how it's much more productive to go with the flow of momentum, rather than fight it. Also, regarding your statement about cellos, I was brought here by "O Come O Come Emmanuel - Cello and Piano Duet" which is really amazing.
Only musicians really passionate of their art and raw talent can appreciate music the way he does. The facial expressions, the smiles, the movement of the entire body with each stroke of the bow, that’s something you can’t fake. Okay brb gonna go tune my violin now.

I know this is an older video, but from a production standpoint, it's cool to see that the earmuff are used as both a functional prop (cold ears are never fun) and a recording prop (they are hiding the earbuds in his ears for him to play along to the song for timing). It's small things like that that catch my attention. Fantastic song and wonderfully arranged!
This is perfection!! My goal in 2021 is to learn the cello; I play the flute, the tenor sax, and various percussion but I have never tried a string of any kind! I am in love with the cello and listening to/watching this just gets me more motivated!! Merry Christmas to you all!! xxoo
I wish you good luck. I briefly picked up the cello while in nursing school. 46 years later still regretting the nursing route. I'm much happier in the music realm. For some strange reason I can't grasp the string instrument family.

Very old Ukrainian folk carol "Schedrik" (also known in arranged version as "Carol of the Bells"). In original Ukrainian it is sung about a swallow flying home in spring, because a swallow is ancient pre-Christian Slavic symbol of Spring....Ancient Slavs celebrated New Year in spring (as the Year started with ressurection of Nature in Spring...)...
The cold weather must have been hard on those bow strings! There are a lot of shots with fraying bows, and just about all of them have Steven in earmuffs and/or you can see his breath in the cold air. Does he mind? Of course not! No doubt the music track was recorded in a studio rather than beside a stream, on an ice rink or along a mountain range. But the notes he played would certainly be hard on the bow strings.

Kyle Jacobson What???????? Read the history of this song, this is the Ukrainian Christmass song which has been presented in New York in 1921 by Ukrainian emigrant Leontovich. My forefathers have been singing it years.
Рома Алєксєєв That's correct. The chant that the song was based on was also originally used in pagan celebrations to ring in the beginning of spring, before Christianity claimed it as their own.
This is absolutely amazing! The combination of the sound of the cellos with each other is hands down riveting and is extremely beautiful. Happy Holidays!
Caitlynn Collise There's actually a lot more going on in the brain when listening to classical music as well. its really giving your brain quite the workout.
"Carol of the Bells" / "Shchedryk" - Ukrainian pre-christian carol. "The chant based on an ostinato four-note pattern within the range of a minor third is thought to be of prehistoric origins and was associated with the coming New Year which in Ukraine before the introduction of Christianity was originally celebrated in April." (c) And it's confirmed by the text itself - "...a little swallow flew and started to twitter", "Come out o Master, look at the sheep pen, there the ewes are nestling and the lambkin have been born". Leontovych actually didn't create it, he arranged it in 1916. )

Great performance of the great Ukrainian Christmass song!
thank you!
This actually isn't Ukrainian
Kyle Jacobson What????????
Read the history of this song, this is the Ukrainian Christmass song which has been presented in New York in 1921 by Ukrainian emigrant Leontovich. My forefathers have been singing it years.
Kyle Jacobson It actually is, it's based on the Ukranian folk song "Shcedryk". Get your facts straight before commenting.

that's great, nice to know about it !! thanks
I watch and listen to this every year when it's nearing December.
Strings and bow hairs are two VERY different things. Let us be very clear on this.
Thank you.
yes
i like it
+Darcy Erinaceinae You are right. strings are thin lines of cotton. Bow strings are horse hairs. So they are two different things.
+Slippery squid same thing with violin

I was impressed how to operate this kind of music instrument, he's very skillful
I love how this starts off sounding like it could be a theme song for Mission Impossible.
Andrew Curley Same. I actually thought I clicked the wrong video at first.

This Ukrainian folk song
Рома Алєксєєв
That's correct. The chant that the song was based on was also originally used in pagan celebrations to ring in the beginning of spring, before Christianity claimed it as their own.
Exactly!!
This is absolutely amazing! The combination of the sound of the cellos with each other is hands down riveting and is extremely beautiful. Happy Holidays!
Amazing, modern music allows you to be in 12 places at once (and play 12 parts!) Love this!! Thank you again for all your music!
This makes me feel so excited, I can't explain it...
its because cellos
Uses piano guys as background music while studying, has to keep telling myself not to watch Steve play the cello. He just look so happy...
thats one of the things that make these guys so great, they enjoyband have fun with what they do...and damn they do it well

Classical music helps the mind and also helps you focus more because there are no words to it.
Caitlynn Collise There's actually a lot more going on in the brain when listening to classical music as well. its really giving your brain quite the workout.
Same tho...😂
We are dancing this at ballet. Couldn't ask for a better song to make the choreography 😍
Any chance of a You Tube video of this performance?

I love this so much! Brings out the excited child in me
"Carol of the Bells" / "Shchedryk" - Ukrainian pre-christian carol.
Leontovych actually didn't create it, he arranged it in 1916. )
I keep coming back to listen to this wonderful and breath taking rendition. Thank you guys for giving so much to so many. It is deeply appreciated.
try drawing with this playing, it works so well, thanks ThePianoGuys for such a great tune because some work for drawing and others don't really work,
Breathtakingly lovely. I really like this unusual arrangement.
I love the piano guys! I can watch and lesson to them all the time!
Heard these guys 4 years ago. Been listening ever since. So talented.
I have no idea why cellos dazzle my heart- but they surely do
Underrated, omg, where have I been? Love this so much. This guy tho, the Cole Roland of Cello...please collab with Lindsey Sterling.
They actually did already. I think it was Mission: Impossible.
ThePianoGuys you are AMAZING! So inspiring! Now I want to become a master cellist.
So glad to listen to the Piano Guys at Christmas. Merry Christmas to everyone.
This just randomly loaded after my beloved TSO version of Carol of the Bells, and I was spellbound the entire time, standing ovation :)
Wow. I love the way he spun his bow like a drumstick.
(Not a musician, is a bow the thing you play a violin or Cello with?)
Yes! :)
HOLD THE PHONE was 1:45 "God rest ye merry gentlemen"?
Yes. This song is a combination of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", English popular carol, and "Carol of the Bells", by composer Mykola Leontovych.
