I love cellos, something magical about this instrument, especially when one can play it like this. An instrument of the soul. No better way to express the meaning of Christmas. I wish the world would settle down and stop hating and killing and realize that we are all one in this vast universe. We are spinning out of control, it is like a tornado, the only way out is exploding. It is so much easier to love one another and get along, it takes so little effort. We are our own demise. If everyone would put positive thoughts out in the universe, we could turn this world around. Peace.

+Peggy Sinclair I find this a bit humorous as I just got home from a Judo session and we just had the lesson demonstrating how it's much more productive to go with the flow of momentum, rather than fight it.
Also, regarding your statement about cellos, I was brought here by "O Come O Come Emmanuel - Cello and Piano Duet" which is really amazing.

Only musicians really passionate of their art and raw talent can appreciate music the way he does. The facial expressions, the smiles, the movement of the entire body with each stroke of the bow, that’s something you can’t fake. Okay brb gonna go tune my violin now.

I know this is an older video, but from a production standpoint, it's cool to see that the earmuff are used as both a functional prop (cold ears are never fun) and a recording prop (they are hiding the earbuds in his ears for him to play along to the song for timing). It's small things like that that catch my attention. Fantastic song and wonderfully arranged!

I wish you good luck. I briefly picked up the cello while in nursing school. 46 years later still regretting the nursing route. I'm much happier in the music realm. I played the clarinet family until Mt St Helens gave me a large dose of COPD. My arthritic hands still play the piano but not as well. I briefly took bagpipe lessons but COPD was also an issue. For some strange reason I can't grasp the string instrument family.

If you posted a link to the song because you think I don't know the history of Carol of the Bells, thanks for the troll because I'm not going to click on a link in a RUclips video lol. I just like the rendition the Piano Guys made... 10 years ago. Hence my comment. I realize Carol of the Bells is not 10 years old ROFL. I have a background in music. But again, thanks for the troll. You made me laugh. xD Or if you're not a troll, take time to read comments in different tones with different pauses. Trying to interpret the rhythm of a sentence - syncopation if you will - and its exact meaning over the internet can be hard. I've definitely misinterpreted sentences before! It happens. So I try not to comment if I don't know what someone is trying to say exactly.

Very old Ukrainian folk carol "Schedrik" (also known in arranged version as "Carol of the Bells"). The cold weather must have been hard on those bow strings! There are a lot of shots with fraying bows, and just about all of them have Steven in earmuffs and/or you can see his breath in the cold air.
Does he mind? Of course not! He's Steven Sharp Nelson, a passionate musician and (apparently) a very optimistic human being. Always smiling, or expressing his very visceral emotions, he is truly a joy to see and hear perform.

    Hark! how the bells
    Sweet silver bells
    All seem to say,
    "Throw cares away."
    Christmas is here
    Bringing good cheer
    To young and old
    Meek and the bold
    Ding, dong, ding, dong
    That is their song
    With joyful ring
    All caroling
    One seems to hear
    Words of good cheer
    From ev'rywhere
    Filling the air
    Oh how they pound,
    Raising the sound,
    O'er hill and dale,
    Telling their tale,
    Gaily they ring
    While people sing
    Songs of good cheer
    Christmas is here
    Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
    Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
    On, on they send
    On without end
    Their joyful tone
    To ev'ry home
    God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
    God rest ye merry, gentlemen
    Let nothing you dismay
    Remember, Christ, our Saviour
    Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
    When we were gone astray

I did my first ever dance performance to this song. It was a tap dance to the God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman part as part of a Christmas Carol if I recall correctly. I was just 5 or 6. I now ballroom dance in high school and have won multiple state championships with my team. I attribute a large amount of my success to this song, because it was a fun song to dance to, and opened up the possibilites to me.

"Carol of the Bells" / "Shchedryk" - Ukrainian pre-christian carol.
"The chant based on an ostinato four-note pattern within the range of a minor third is thought to be of prehistoric origins and was associated with the coming New Year which in Ukraine before the introduction of Christianity was originally celebrated in April." (c) And it's confirmed by the text itself - "...a little swallow flew and started to twitter", "Come out o Master, look at the sheep pen, there the ewes are nestling and the lambkin have been born".
Leontovych actually didn't create it, he arranged it in 1916. )
