  • One of the best anime of all time has ended and yet we are still thinking about it. We usually don’t go full in discussing an anime series but there is just something about this show that is so good that we needed to make a video about it.

This is such a great analysis of the themes of Attack on Titan!! "Who is the real enemy" is such a clear summary of how the story tugs on viewers/readers' emotions and adds to the nuance of such a grand-scale story! Another important theme I think is the ideal of "freedom" - at first, Eren's innocent desire for discovery and autonomy beyond the walls, which later transforms into horrendous acts of violence to justify "freedom" for a few

Aot was my first anime, and I'm so glad it was. it might honestly be the best show of all time. the story is so complex, and fascinating, the characters are perfect, and the setting is so realistic. I love this show, at first I only liked it because I looked like Eren, but the way it changed my perspective on life wouldn't've been able to have been achieved by any other show. Hellsing cuz Alucard is the antithesis of "what the hell is that?!", even his enemies, far leaker vampires recoil in horror at his full power.
Elven Lied cuz of the 'invisibility' of Lucy's vectors and the shock/terror of stuff happening when she rampages but people aren't sure whats causing the blood/fire/death around them

I couldn't bring myself to finish the anime. The mangaka has a history of glorifying imperialism (e.g. Mikasa is named after a famous Japanese imperial ship) and I really didn't like the holocaust allusion like, at all. The thing I *do* like is how we are led to believe Eren is the hero because he is the protagonist, but he ends up being the villain. The lore is also deeply fascinating when it comes to Ymir (why didn't she just kill the king? smh). I just wish it didn't come with all the other baggage, and the severed head thing at the end 😬

This is lost on many AoT fans, the title, at least initially, was heavily based upon a 2006 visual novel game called Muv Luv Alternative. To sum up the premise, the world has been waging a war for 40 years fighting alien hordes of alien where over the half the world has been taken over by these aliens and only about a billion people are alive and people use mechs to fight the aliens. The story is military themed and has a lot of political intrigue and political infighting, a coupe- similar to AoT. Many of the same themes found in AoT can be found in Muv Luv Alternative. I doubt anyone would play the game but its on steam and its a sequel. There are also anime adaptions of the spinoffs but not every titles can be blessed with good adaptions.

The manga last 4 or so volumes felt rushed, plot points and events happened to quick and in the case of ch139 it was execute poorly, on its own the final arc that goes from ch 124 to 139 is below the rest of the series, while the anime version of those events sits among the best arcs in the show.

I think you feel with AoT that the author had something in mind but was either unable or unwilling to go the full path.
One of the narrative strands is that the Titans will not be relevant once the nations develop better weapons which is bound to happen soon.
So why is Zeke so obsessed with ending the Titans and Eldians ? Their threat is literally negated by just waiting.
There are so many of these questions i was left with after the ending...

    • @an60255
      @an60255 6 месяцев назад +1

Even if the titans will no longer be a major threat in few decades, the Eldians will still be considered as a potential threat and subhuman because of their blood. Marley would still continue using eldians as weapons and would try to obtain the founder titan from Paradis. Further, there is the continued threat of Rumbling. Zeke therefore considers euthanasia plan through sterilization as most humane plan for the rest of the Eldian race, as they will have a chance to live peacefully while eventually they stop existing.

  • @dromalloma2651

I've seen a lot of mixed reception to the ending. Personally, the end of the manga feels like Isayama just ran out of time and his personal investment, and wanted to finish the series so he and the audience could move on. At least, that was the idea.
Imo, the retcon where Eren is revealed to be the one to have killed his mother(?) & commanded Grisha to act is where AoT jumped the shark. It completely destroys Grisha's arc and Eren's for that matter.
It could've been easier to accept if the only way Eren could conceptualize being stripped of his own agency by the Halucingenia / Worm was to blame himself for _everything_ including his father's poor life choices by proxy. But instead, it comes off like a cheap emotional crit. Without agency, the characters are all just moving along for the plot's sake.
There are other smaller things I didn't like, but that was the biggest one.
The codependent romance(???) between Eren and Mikasa was undercooked, should've been touched on in Marley Arc (on screen tension, maybe a drunken confession or a kiss that ultimately backfires).
overreliance on underdeveloped tertiary characters such as Sasha's Marleyan BF, in lieu of developing existing ones such as Annie or Colt or Kiyomi
the possibility of Bertholdt superceding Armin's persona, as other Titan Shifters have been possessed or influenced, such as Frieda and Eren. instead his crush on Annie(?) is mostly played for laughs, when he's never gotten flustered like that around her before he ate Bertholdt. in the above context it's legitimately disturbing and I don't think that was intentional.
I do think AoT has its great moments, despite the flaws. FT and Uprising Arcs were fantastic. Loved the flashbacks with Grisha and Kruger, the Reiss family + Historia, Zackley's whole double life, and the stuff with Eren and Reiner during the Marley Arc is probably my favorite writing in the series. I just wish the later stuff was more consistent in its tone.

@@sumikacel88 I would argue there was no alternative, eren had two options, end all eldians, or end everyone else, there's no third option, there's no scenario where the war that's been going on even before ymir became a titan would've magically stopped without one side being wiped out, the ending makes that clear, so he chose his side, it's not a perfect choice and it made him the monster of many people of his world, this is what makes this show so interesting, it forces you to face the reality that no one is truly innocent.

    • @sumikacel88
      @sumikacel88 6 месяцев назад +1

@@abdobelbida7170 Yes, so as I said, him "being an idiot" and trying to make his friends into heroes out of nowhere, when his inner thoughts hadn't shown this plan of his, was obviously last minute so Isayama didn't have his main character be morally questionable without getting redeemed in some way.
He even perfectly understood what the only solution was previously, it's what he told Historia in chapter 130, now we're to assume he lied?
His friends' lives were endangered by the rumbling and the Yeagerists, Hange actually did die, something he could have prevented yet chose not to. If he was shackled to the future he saw then Eren simply lost to fate i.e Isayama not wanting to take the story where it naturally should have. I don't believe he had written it for 11 years to tell us about the cycle of violence.

Man I'm in the minority here but to me this anime ain't that good or deep.
Now I'll acknowledge: it's OST is a bop, and I think the problem is that the author, like most manga authors, was on an ungodly, inhuman time crunch that made him fumble the ball on some aspects and go for the soft blow on some aspects.

    • @upg5147
      @upg5147 6 месяцев назад +3

I think it was very good and had a lot to say...until the end. The message never changed and that was a strong message but the actual story meant to showcase that message was sloppy and got in the way of the theme which should never be the case.
I think the series dipped in quality when Marley was introduced but that was more subjective on my part than an objectively bad move. The bad moves, without even mentioning the ending chapters, is Gabby as a character and Reiner.
Gabby makes sense, she is Erin from the other side and we are supposed to see that and understand how Erin had that mindset and that it was bad. Only thing is, we knew that. Everyone hated Erin because all he did was scream and was so single minded and one dimensional. Giving us the opposite version of him was meant to be a "gotcha" moment but at the cost of the rest of the story.
The same goes for Reiner, who has a great land interesting arc, but is so important and focused on that it seems he had plot armor far too often. My biggest issue is that he only lived because of a BS power that was never used again way back in season 2 or 3.
Then of course we have things like the time travel and Erin knowing everything and the actual ending itself.
The series was engaging and interesting at the start and gripped everyone with mystery and danger but by the end the message and theme out grew the story and characters and became more preachy and left me feeling unsatisfied.

    It's fuckin not though.
The story is literally all over the place making it obvious that the mangaka had no idea wtf to do with it. Once they reach the basement, it went downhill. The dude had no idea what to do with the setup and spent the entirety up to that point trying to figure out SOMETHING to put in there.
The show literally fuckin ends with "Why Mikasa?" "I dunno, lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Check it out, bird Eren!"
It's Fallout 4's "You just wouldn't understand!" when asking "The Father" why the hell are they replacing people with synths.

I stopped watching when the series changed distributors locally, so I kept reading the manga.
Both, in my very humble opinion, suffer from fascist-admiring undertones, a lack of true pacing, and real sense of direction.
Clearly you differ from my opinion, but the story of season one is padded to fit 25 episodes, the unnecessary death of Sasha, the number of unnecessary characters...
I gave it a chance still, but got back to all the incessant changes for motivations, incoherent decision making and (I won't spoil things, but you'll know if you saw the ending, and who seems to have been right, which... Yuck).
I'm sorry, but where you see genius, I see a disastrous mess of a story that, ultimately, takes you for a rollercoaster ride that's unsafe and unsatisfying.

The fact you seem to be thinking Eren, the literal antagonist of the last arc, was portrayed as the good guy in the ending or that this story about people overcoming their hatred and differences in race and culture for the greater good is somehow pro-fascist is the demonstration of the lack of media literacy era we live in.

@@angelamengualcortinas3614Eren is not an antagonist, he's the protagonist, disagreeing with his actions doesn't make him an antagonist.
Armin thanks him for committing genocide in their talk in paths and so does Reiner, Annie and his friends. Their conversation is slightly altered in the anime to make him seem more upset yet they still hug each other, there's no resentment for leaving them in such a precarious situation.
The finale, when Paradis is destroyed, proves Eren's philosophy that the conflict won't ever end, so why does he stop at 80%?
You say the story is about overcoming their hatred and differences in race but the ending doesn't reflect that.

@@sumikacel88 oh wow, an Eren apologist rumbling the subtext once more 🤣 what a classic.
Armin doesn't thank him for commiting mass genocide, he thanks him for the intent of protecting them. In the next sentence, he literally describes his actions as a "terrible mistake". And that's in the manga. In the anime that line is replaced with "thank you for showing me the world beyond the walls", which is not only a lot more beautiful and it represents better their friendship, but has also nothing to do with the Rumbling. And the sentiment is prevalent among the others, their thankful for not being titans anymore but they would have wanted him to take another solution. Annie says "I didn't ask you to do this", Jean calls him a piece of shit, etc.
The bombing of Paradis isn't something to prove Eren's ideology, it happens thousands of years after the Rumbling and its a way to say the cycle of hatred will never end completely. If anything, it shows how meaningless his actions were, the dissappearence of the titans didn't led to peace.
Man, Isayama is a cursed man, some people say his ending is fascist while the true fascist fans are angry because it wasn't fascist at all. He can't win. And for the record, he described Eren as the villain of the last arc in an interview before the ending of the manga... Soooo yeah, he's the final antagonist.

"Apologist", as if the ending itself isn't intent on keeping Eren's genocide low so he can be reedemed because he "did it for his friends". I'm simply pointing it out alongside other flaws in Eren's plan.
And why are they so content with what Eren did? Even if you don't believe it's them thanking him he's practically being played up as a martyr. It wouldn't be wrong to assume they remember him fondly.
You can't disprove that Eren's belief wasn't wrong even though you state immediately afterwards that it was right by saying "the cycle of hatred will never end completely". You had no counterargument when I said that the end doesn't reflect the message of "overcoming racial differences". And why do you point out that his actions were meaningless? To further drive home that he cowered out in the end? SnKeks are so brainwashed they will believe anything Isayama says, he is still the protagonist by definition, do you believe Light Yagami is an antagonist?

@@sumikacel88 he never said "for turning yourself into a mass murderer for our sake"; he said "you became a mass murderer for our sake". Then proceeds to say that was a terrible mistake. In case you want to still use misstranslations, Reiner doesn't say either "what a man you are" 🙄.
Eren isn't a martyr, and isn't played up as that. Eren wanted, and failed, to become a martyr, which is very different. The only thing the ending dismantles is the idea of Eren being this convinced nationalistic fascist like Floch, an idea that everyone with a brain already knew. It was obvious he was using the yeagerists like he was using Zeke. Eren though what he did was for the best in order to bring peace for the island, true, but he doesn't think of Eldians as this superior race and besides, he fails nonetheless. Literally 3 years after the Rumbling, the fascist group he helped promote for his plan take over the island and pretend to reignite the conflict, which in turn leads to his friends endangering themselves again in order to clear his mess (you know, the ones he wanted to protect by doing what he did). Btw, let's hear what Armin has to say in this scene on the boat to Paradis: "they'll have to want to hear about our story. Why those who tried to kill one another for so long have appeared... To advocate for peace." Thanks to the Alliance (no, not Eren's actions) the yeagerists are stopped and the conflict posponed for hundreds of years. Now please, enlighten me, what interpretation do I have to make of this scene other than overcoming our racial and political differences is the way to long-term peace? You seem, again, to interpret the posterior bombing scene as an apologia of Eren, which is simply not. Eren's motto wasn't "the cycle of hatred will never end", his motto was "Fight!" which is the same as the nations that bombed Paradis. Eren just fed the fire and his actions led to the destruction of his home-country once the heroes that killed him, who were the true wall against foreign attacks, died. It's a commentary on human nature being violent, not a kiss to Eren.
And, for the love of God, YES, i know Eren is the protagonist of the story as a hole. I'm saying he's the antagonist of the last arc, which isn't mutually exclusive. The objective at the end was to kill him and the narrative isn't centered on his pov. Even ending haters agree he was the final antagonist, what are you on about? It's obvious to the naked eye.
At the end of the day, you can dislike this story and this ending. I understand AOT isn't for everyone like many other shows just aren't for me. I understand people being uncomfortable with the "thank you" scene and wanting his friends to condemn him more. I don't think I'm better for liking the ending, but don't tell me this story is apologia of anything like the OP was implying while flattening to the extreme the text in order to extract the worst possible interpretation of it.
