This is great, I’m planning a build myself. Did you use bought plans or make the plans yourself? I’ve also been wondering about strings and haven’t been able to find an answer online, what weight strings did you use?
ill have to find out what size I got, its been a while, but i used the rectified synthetic gut stings. no plans, i made it as i went. I did look at dimensions of the oldest example they found in Germany and used that as starting point. Thanks for watching!!
I absolutely loved it! I've loved the Greek lyre since I was really young, and have fallen in love with the Trossingen Lyre in recent years, and was looking to try my hand at making one of my own. How hard is it to actually make one of these? What are some issues you run into while making one? Do you need whole pieces of wood? And most importantly: I do have quite a bit of experience in woodworking, but I've never made an instrument before. Would I be better off just buying one, or is this the kind of instrument that would be a good project for a beginner? Thanks in advance!
Kenneth Price thanks for the comment. It was pretty easy for me but I've been building guitars and doing woodworking for a long time. It is hollow and that's the hardest part to do really. I def recommend giving it a try, ill be making a few more over the winter
I've had access to a workshop and some instruction a while ago and built one myself, with only a little bit of woodworking experience accumulated in the weeks before. I made the tuning pegs myself, turned from ash wood and I had some issues with that that I had to work out. The first ones I made weren't tight enough, so they came lose repeatedly, explosively so. I still have some finishing touches to put on it, the new ones turned out to not fit the tool I ended up getting because of lose tolerances on the one I had access to for fitting, so I'm sanding them down to the right size and I'll be refinishing them with linseed oil again. Because of that I haven't actually been able to play it at full string tension yet, but it should work. Hopefully in 2 or so weeks, when I'm done I will be able to. That is if my strings don't snap again, I had issues with some of them on my first attempt.

Sounds nice! What kind of strings did you use?
they are the synthetc gut strings. they're sanded and feel silky. I forget manufacturer sorry
