I’m so excited to see this because right at this moment I have a pattern to transfer to a mid green material. Can’t wait to try and thanks! I have been using that app too - it has been very useful. Thanks 🙏 😊
Thank you so much! I have a pretty font of my sons name that I’ve been trying to trace onto black fabric for a mask and I was trying to trace with a dress makers pencil!! It’s not crisp so I was having such a hard time, but a gel pen?! Genius! Thank you thank you thank you!
You could use a clean inverted pie plate underneath with a light source under the plate so you don't have to hold pattern up against the pattern to trace.
Funny. I have a cute black top that got rust stains on it that I want to embroider over, and when I was at the store a few weeks ago I mistakenly bought white gel pens instead of chalk pens (🙃) and then got home and realized I couldn't use them for what I'd intended. Now I guess I have a purpose. Thank you so much for this quick and easy tutorial.
Thank you for a very helpful tutorial and a most useful App suggestion! Perhaps silly question: wouldn’t it be much easier to trace the pattern onto the fabric directly on the backlit ipad and without the hoop? Or am I missing something crucial here? Kind regards
Hi Michaela - I prefer to trace designs with the fabric stretched in the hoop for a couple of reasons. If I were to trace the design and THEN stretch it, the design will get stretched out along with the fabric. If it's traced with the fabric stretched, then the design doesn't "shift" or get altered. Also, it's easier to trace onto stretched fabric because it's taut. Unstretched fabric slithers around more as you run the pen over it. Hopefully that makes sense!
One option is to cut your sheet into squares and work on each square individually. Then, you can sew the squares together like a quilt. Smaller pieces of fabric are easier to trace at a window and easier to hold in your hands. They are also easier to take with you when you want to work on your embroidery away from home. Good luck!
Shan - I love stitching on dark fabrics! I've found that bright, saturated colors often look best, but you can definitely choose any color palette that you like best. I always lay the skeins of thread onto the fabric when I'm choosing colors, because it helps me to actually see what the colors look like on the fabric I've chosen. Hope that helps!
I have not been able to find a free light source app on my iPhone. I looked for the one you mentioned and couldn’t find it. Any other suggestions without paying $4.99? Thanks!!
I bought a light pad off of wish for $8 that's LED and like a flat tablet. Its SUPER BRIGHT and fantastic! I've used it so much already! Well worth the money
You might want to use a different transfer method, like using a hot iron transfer pencil and transfer paper instead (you can find youtube videos for that method too)
Shoshana is right - you'll need a different transfer method for denim because of it's thickness. Lots of people use the Solvy Stick 'n Stitch interfacing on denim.
Hi Mariyam - I like the Frixion "heat erasable" gel pen. But I also know that even though you can "erase" it, the lines still might show up. Therefore, I always make sure to cover those lines with my stitching.
Hello! I'm not sure the exact app I used when I made this video is still available, but you can search for "light box" or maybe "Lightbox" in the App Store to find something that will work for this.
Using a window works as well. Tape your pattern to the window. Then, tape your fabric on top of your pattern and the window. (No hoop for this method of tracing.) You have to use a white fabric pencil or light colored pencil when tracing at a window rather than a pen, but it is very effective! Once your pattern is traced, put it in your hoop and you are ready to sew!
You don't really need an app. Just save an image on your phone/tablet etc. that is completely white, and use that. It works exactly the same. No need to waste money on pointless apps.
Hi Gloria - I have used the Stick 'n Stitch paper extensively, and there are many, many things I do not like about it. To name just a few, you cannot use it for non-colorfast threads. (Even some threads that are labeled as colorfast will still run, which is a huge problem, especially if you've stitched your entire piece only to ruin it because it has to be rinsed). In addition, the threads never feel or look as smooth or soft after rinsing away the sticky adhesive. Again, it's no fun to spend hours and hours (weeks? months?) stitching a design only to have it look not as pretty after rinsing away the sticky interfacing. And one of the biggest problems for me is that the needle gets sticky after only a few times though the interfacing. A huge part of the enjoyment for me about stitching is the feel of the needle moving smoothly through the fabric. With the sticky interfacing, it's more like a battle to get the needle through the fabric each and every time. Thus, this is my preferred method to transfer onto dark fabrics.

Very beautiful embroidery designs
Thank you so much!
Very helpful! thank you! Can I also just tape my pattern and fabric to a lightbox out of the hoop? Would you then need to heat set the gel pen?
This was helpful! Just need to grab a white gel pen before I can start. Thank you!!

This worked so well! Thank you sharing this. ☺️

You are so welcome Emily! And yup - you can definitely put that gel pen to good use now!
Wat is that pen ur using it for to draw
Thank you so much! I would never figure that out for myself.
I'm so glad you found this helpful!
Thank u , excellent idea
Can a charcoal pencil be used for this? And I love u for showing this method? It’s so much easier
I'm not sure I would use charcoal, as it could rub off the fabric too easily. And you're welcome - I hope it was helpful for you!
Charcoal is the smudgiest of pencils. You definitely don't want to use charcoal for this. It will be all over your hands and your piece in no time.

Great tutorial. Thank you very much!
This was very helpful. Thank you.
What method to use for a bed cover project. How do I draw the pattern if I am doing a bigger project such as single bed sheet etc.

Can i use this technique to a dark shirt?
N this white gel pencil is washable?
Can we do this on organza fabric? Plzzz tell me
Will the white gel pen come off?
Hi Olga - the white gel pen is permanent, so it does not come off.
I plan on doing embroidery on a dark fabric. I want to do a floral. What colors to use? I would post a pic but don’t know how?
