If you move the iron slowly, it will pick up the whole image being transferred :)

You also have to apply a little weight while your ironing. If you do this properly you can resuse the pattern at least two more times on another fabric

Would any of these work on black velvet? I have tried a white fabric pencil that won't work, no color gets on the fabric.

Hi! I ended up buying a white fabric gel pen which worked well. The velvet wasn't very thick, but even if it was, the pen worked better with a light touch so you can skim the surface and still get white markings on it. It removes either by iron or washing (I ironed an area and it disappeared).
This is the one I used:
