I am glad that jazz musicians from the past didn't listen to people tell them they weren't playing jazz. We would never have the wide selection we have today. However, I wish Kenny G would've been told that and listened. Soft jazz... That ain't jazz. But these two are taking complex chord progressions and complex hip hop polyrhythms to create a fusion. So no, this isn't traditional jazz but reinventing a song for a new generation, that is what it's all about.
I've been following these two for years now, and I'm not sure why I just now remembered this. But I saw a band in Portland one time at Dante's, supporting some other band. They had the same live set up as Domi and Beck, keyboard and drums facing each other like that. And they also played some wild, irreverent, super technical yet approachable jazz. That's what they've reminded me of this whole time, and it just now came to me. This was 10-15 years ago now, I can't remember what they were called. Maybe Moisture Throne? I think they were from Bend. Waaay ahead of their time.

It was jazz as is this work, incorporating the inner detail of math rock precision, but with nuance and dynamics. Yeah, it ain’t 1961, which is my musical home, but at 75 I am re-shaping my remaining neural circuits doing JD Beck type drumming. Not all can agree, but this is one brilliant top-level pair of composers. She’s French and formally trained in classical style.

The thing with this kind of Jazz that I can't tell if anyone makes a mistake. The piano bit sounds like random notes tome,mostly.. Maybe that's on purpose though ;) Love the drumming though!

Domi & Beck... mixing seriousousity and playfulness. I've never heard such a thing. I used to hear frome some who say jazz is a thinking person's music. This music teaches you to let it all go. Just go for the ride. Domi... well... do you wanna go there? Beck's drumming... like no other. He's actually pushing drummers of the same genre. Bless you sweet children. ❤🙏🏼

That slum village album was my (formal) intro to jay dee and just reignites my enthusiasm for these two after stumbling upon them with their madvillain cover vid. They're both amazing every time I hear a new performance but JD's drums were coming in so clearly in this one, a bit distorted but easily heard and separated. I absolutely loved it in the drum solo at the end. I can't wait for the music of the future.

I am so impressed by their freedom of spirit. Plus I was there at the birth of Drum and Bass. As a Airhead. Anyway, they are the future. And it (the future) is in GOOD HANDS!

My Favorite Things was composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein. This is a great and innovative version of this tune. However, it sounds nothing like Coltrane's version and is not in the same time feel. The original tune, and Coltrane's version are in 3/4. This version is in a very definitive 4 feel. Right?
Not so definitely as you might think. JD plays a half-time beat, in which the snare back-beat lend on the 3. While it is in 4/4, there is still a clear way of accenting the bar on the third beat rather than the second or the fourth through the entire song. Listen closely to which beat is accentuated even during improvisation and there it is, 3rd beat of the bar almost every single time...! And that's not a common thing. They always, always accentuate that third beat, then leave the fourth as a breather, at least for the first few minutes, and come back on the 1. They could just as easily play it in 3/4 except the accent would be on the 1 and 3 leaving less space and I'd be too crowd IMHO.

Just before finding your video, I was listening to "Spiritual" by John Coltrane (recorded at Village Vanguard), and his wife, Alice C. was the pianist. but she played Harp & sang as well!! I think McCoy Tyner, is the pianist on other versions. When my very cute daughter was 4, she was already able to recognize his style!! I had received 2 free admissions to Mt. Hood Jazz festival. Audiences were sitting on different sections of a beautiful lawn on a sunny day!! On that specific day, they had McCoy Tyner & a lot of other giants!!! I think (but I'm not sure), McCoy T. noticed my very Cute daughter (4 years old), on the lawn. On his first break, he asked his security people to tell me that my daughter could sit next to him!! So she was seated, about 2 ft. away, on a little stool next to him🥰!! That college campus is heavenly!! The school's Jazz band truly sounds & is at pro-level!! McCoy Tyner was playing next to a beautiful river, that bisects the Mt. Hood College, and it has 2 Species of Salmon in it!!! I used to fish it for Salmon and Steelhead (Sea-going rainbow trout), between my science classes!!😊

Just before finding your video, I was listening to "Spiritual" by John Coltrane (recorded at Village Vanguard), and his wife, Alice C. was the pianist. but she played Harp & sang as well!! I think McCoy Tyner, is the pianist on other versions. When my very cute daughter was 4, she was already able to recognize his style!! I had received 2 free admissions to Mt. Hood Jazz festival. Audiences were sitting on different sections of a beautiful lawn on a sunny day!! On that specific day, they had McCoy Tyner & a lot of other giants!!! I think (but I'm not sure), McCoy T. noticed my very Cute daughter (4 years old), on the lawn. On his first break, he asked his security people to tell me that my daughter could sit next to him!! So she was seated, about 2 ft. away, on a little stool next to him🥰!! That college campus is heavenly!! The school's Jazz band truly sounds & is at pro-level!! McCoy Tyner was playing next to a beautiful river, that bisects the Mt. Hood College, and it has 2 Species of Salmon in it!!! I used to fish it for Salmon and Steelhead (Sea-going rainbow trout), between my science classes!!😊

Coltranes best album. I like this interpretation and as mentioned already in the comments; it’s good to see a newer generation enjoying this.
