She’s basically a prodigy, having started out as a classical pianist and earned a national scholarship to study in the US. And JD was also taken in as a protégé of one of Snarky Puppy’s lead musicians. Funnily enough, the first instrument DOMi played as a child were the drums, and JD’s was the piano, which *may* explain something.
"How do they write a song like this"? I was wondering the same thing. No charts or anything. How do they remember this stuff? I'm a 51 year old drummer playing semiprofessional since 13 years old. I'm no slouch on drums, but this kid blows my mind. I can't think and process thoughts that fast, let alone get my hands and feet to execute those ideas.
"How do they remember this stuff? " Classical pianists regularly memorize huge amounts of concert repertoire. Weather Report memorized all their (sometimes complex) songs. Allman Brothers memorized Jessica. Basically, by playing it over and over. I suppose one advantage of JD and DOMI is that they don't have a lot of repertoire at this point. But basically, they just play it a lot. And they are kind of brilliant.
I just found out about them last night. I'm the biggest fan now! Omg... I grew up with jazz in the house and this takes me back to that feeling. But wow is it new...it's fresh AF!
I know you said you were focusing alot on Domi, but I liked that! Ive seen mostly drummers react to them and they naturally focus more on JD. So I love to see people’s reactions/thoughts/observations of Domi!!! Thanks for digging deep and giving her love
JD and DOMi just make me just want to make music, even though I could never ever play like them. Great virtuoso playing that does not put me off but encourages me. I mean they are out of this world, out of everybody's league but it doesn't destroy my confidence in music creation
Their combination is what is truly exceptional. DOMI's obviously a gifted player, but it is JD's beats that bring their music up to something that is highly original. And yeah, I love his minimalist drum kit. Two is better than one! I love this analysis as well. I saw "music teacher reacts" and thought "oh, another one of those "wow" reaction videos?". No, this is a video that actually provides some insight into the music. So thank you for your service sir!
They remind me of Jaga Jazzist. If you don't know them, learn to know them. They are a 12 piece band from Sweden. They've been around for at least 2 decades. What makes Domi and JD special, is that they are only 2 people making all this incredible music.
8:04 - What about JD's hair? 😊 I really appreciate what you pointed out about their balance of technicality and musicality. There are so many technically proficient players who leave me cold because I feel like I'm listening to someone who just practiced lots of scales or paradiddles. Not only are these two incredibly musical individually, but their musical conversations are so interesting. Re: Domi's history, there's a YT video of her at age 14 playing a very difficult Liszt piece ("Gnomenreigen") which showcases her already remarkable skill. She just oozes music. Thanks for your thoughtful remarks about these two young lions!
I noticed in another reaction video, Domi referenced the opening lines of Bill Evans' 1961 'Nardis' and can hear influences of early-mid 70's Chick Corea/RTF.
Also, would love to see your reaction to Louis Cole and Knower. There is a collaboration they did with Bob Mintzer and the WDR band, Gotta Be Another Way. I think it’s one of the best large ensemble/big band charts I ever heard. Just my opinion but I think Louis Cole is one of the most exciting musicians out there. Also, Knower (Louis Cole and G. Artadi) doing this song called “Overtime”, recorded in like the hallway of a house or something. Please respond to that sometime. Mind blowing.
Hi David , you ask fine questions : from where are they these two cats !!?? When I discovered these 2 I felt a great happiness, the same happiness I felt when I discovered the Canterbury Scene round the end of the sixties..National Health, Hatfield and the North, Gentle Giant .. The seventies were fine but by these times I feel good with a lot of cats : Hiromi, Jacob Collier, Snarky Puppy, The Lesson and of course JD Beck and Domi (the duet is my favorite number) ETC.. and thank you for your way of listening YB from France.
So impressive, and as always, love the energy and narrative you provide, David! And many thanks to 'Howie' as well! You should give the musician Dallas Green a look and listen! Alexisonfire (alexis-on-fire) is a great display of him in a similar setting as Tilian, within DGD. (But drastically different at the same time) "Rough Hands" I think you would enjoy, BUT City & Colour is his glorious solo project that's become quite a little folk band. He's also got a great partner project with P!NK.. She + Him, or something? Anyway, anything off the first 2 albums, Sometimes and Bring Me Your Love.... Mesmerizing timbre in his voice.. and truly beautiful emotion in both albums, through and through. Grand Optimist is a glimpse of the transition to band mode. Again much love and thanks!!
Hi David! This duo is remarkable, again something I have not heard before! Thank You for that and Your enthusiastic work! Small remark, request to the end - Soilwork - A whisp of the Atlantic. Moving on the Architect line- You should also check out Annisokay- Bonfire of the Millenials. Their 2021 album Aurora just dropped, it is a hidden gem :)
You should see what the drummer from Crystal Lake can do with a really simple/small kit. He's a frickin machine. Starset - Bringing It Down Starset - Kashmir (Amazon exclusive, audio only) LITERALLY ANYTHING BY STARSET Crystal Lake - Apollo, Aeon, Disobey I Prevail - Gasoline, Bow Down, Hurricane, Hurricane Reimagined, D.O.A. feat Joyner Lucas, Every Time You Leave
Man, your reactions fill my heart with pure joy and hapiness) Thanks for everything you're doing How about checking a band Zeal & Ardor They have a pretty unique sound. It's a mix of black metal and spiritual. They're also GREAT live. I personally recommend listening to Come On Down and Don't You Dare, especially live versions from Live In London Stay awesome 🖤🖤🖤
David I want you to react to this song called "Return from eternal ruin" by Black tongue. I feel like you'll see the depth of that song and how big of a song it really is. I'd love to see your opinion of it and it's structure. I feel like its something entirely new to you. Pull the lyrics up, and sadly there's no music video, but listen to the studio version to get the heaviness of the song.
U gotta listen to TK, either katharsis or unravel which are basically the most known songs, but he has done a lot and a lot great songs outside those two!
I love your reaction videos. You are a great musician yourself obviously with big ears and astute taste and--I get a kick out of your sense of humor too. There is something I love that DOMi and JD did on Adult Swim with Thundercat and Ariana Grande. A great tune by Thundercat called “Them Changes”. Not to be confused with the Hendrix, Band of Gypsys song.
If you haven't already, you should do a reaction video for the new TWELVE FOOT NINJA song LONG WAY HOME. It's there most recent release. I think you will thoroughly enjoy it. ruclips.net/video/JYLJwT2fwDk/видео.html
I personally don't like the term Math in music styles, and the reason is that like Mathcore, it seems that everything is about showing of skills, but these two here are so tastefully melodic. I mean that without any offense.

Domi and jd are freakin insane. They both have magic hands
There not from the planet 🌎
Love this! Their new album should be out by 2026 at this rate.
Came out this month lol

Their first album has been nominated for 2 Grammy's. :)

DOMi & JD are SICK!
They're close friends to Thundercat, you should check some of his performances too, he's a god of bass !

“DOMi looks almost like a cool looking alien… or something.”
-best quote
Their concert last night at the Montréal jazz fest was just incredible
I’m almost obsessed with them. Fascinating!
I got the chance to see them live with Chon and it was god like
Super rad duo
Glad you jumped on this track. You should cover any music they release.
The fact that this isn’t ABR concerns me
The Corea comparison is so apt!!!!
It really is beyond
i wish i knew where to start to even begin playing like domi
Start simple

Nice reference to Rick Beato's struggles lol. Awesome reaction as always!
I heard recently that they write songs together on the computer in their heads first without their instruments.
You should check on "Snarky Puppy - What about me". It's mindblowing.
Awesome track ❤ one of my favourites from the shrimps.
Totally Chic Corea!
JD says they write away from their instruments on a laptop! Also, you've got to check her out when she adds foot pedals.
I understand brotha, the struggle is real

Gotta check out the new album for sure homie!
There's a video of her totally nailing a Liszt piece when she was 14 like she was just taking a walk in the park.
The beginning really reminds me of Giant Steps

That makes me so happy!
“Coltrane” is the thing you were trying to describe Domi as.
They just leave you speechless. It’s unreal; I’ve been playing piano for almost 30 years and it’s really just saying, “…f it, let’s rip it.”
Ragtime was big influence for me, also trying to transpose classical guitar. Corea, of course, that sort of thing.
