Thank you for empowering us with a more accesible way to practice. I go in... having lofty goals and thinking well, I haven't mastered it quickly, and give up. BUT I just want to enjoy the practice, I'm not trying to be creative for a side hustle, but I do want to improve gradually. Hard to lower the inner critic voice.
Silencing that inner critic can be so so difficult, I understand what you mean Sometimes it helps me to visualize that voice as a child that is having a tantrum, I dont let him run the show but I also acknowledge its existence so it has room to speak
Exactly. That's what happens.. I had a really big canvas and i looked at it everyday. But I never ended up painting on it, thinking I'd do it when I get an idea that's worth using up the canvas.
Agree! A tiny drawing or painting - e.g. two or three inches square is somehow far less intimidating - possibly because you simply don’t have room to get very detailed. Also, if it turns out awful, throwing it in the bin doesn’t hurt as much. Start another! 😁
I did this when I was a teenager. At some point I started to leave those Post its with messages for my mum. She died 2017 and when I went through her things to sort them....I found my Post-its. She had kept them all. I was kind of surprised how good I was back then. My skill has decreased since then, but I think I want to start drawing again, so ty for this tip.
Never give up buddy, it's never too late to retake the old activities or even new ones. God bless you and your sweet mum, she's now in a place even better than us for sure.
That's funny, I've been doing this for years. I simply throw the bad drawings on post-its away and sometimes make larger versions of the good ones. There's no pressure behind it, and nobody sees your failures. Works for me.
Yesss thats amazing! Love to see that you have been using this approach, I wish I had done more of this during the earlier parts of my creative journey because its so liberating
This is actually the homework my professor gives us. She doesn't give us a specific number, but every class we're told to come in with a handful of 2x2 inch drawings or paintings. I've actually enjoyed it. It takes a lot of pressure off, compared to having to make a whole finished piece for each class.
Awww that's amazing!! There is no reason you couldnt keep doing it for fun, if it made your mornings more enjoyable then its a great way to start the day!
Excellent explanation. As someone with ADHD or simply a child who didn’t get support when needed, I have always had a very valid visceral/physical reaction to anything that became difficult or frustrating. So I break up my practice MUCH smaller than the average person, I don’t worry about how “long” I spent practicing something, I engage/visit the activity regularly, in small chunks, just enough so that my nervous system doesn’t end up hating it or rejecting the negative feelings the activity produces. It’s a great way to learn, practice and still progress. Let your body stay in “I can” and pull out/re-visit in a small amount again, at another time. I used to do things and push myself hard to the point that I lost interest after an intense period of learning. That doesn’t happen any more because I don’t put myself off, I keep it comfortable. It’s seems slow but I find that this approach actually increases my depth of learning/knowledge and introduces gentle/small bouts of discomfort rather than overwhelming ones.
Ahhh learning in smaller bits so its suits your nervous system is genius! It takes a lot of wisdom to adjust your learning this way. Good on you for actually implementing a system that works well for you! Keep us updated and let us know how it goes!
i love that you applied this to reading also. i have not finished a novel in years. i’ll give both the art & reading advice a shot. thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for the tips! Honestly I think the 'throwing away' part of this video is what really clicked. Something about a completed drawing that I'm not happy with just physically sitting in my sketchbook really irked me. It's the grander expectation I'm putting in my head about the result rather than having fun with it.
You gave me an idea. Perhaps, putting a Post-it note on each page in your sketchbook and then sketching only the ones you like into your book will create that nice finished product you might be looking for!
Yesssss the freedom to throw it away can be so liberating. You can also hide them away so no one will see them. I have boxes of drawing stored away so they are only for me let us know how this goes! Id love it if this trick helped you draw more!
Somehow, I slowly stopped drawing as I grew up and began taking on more responsibilities. I've been wanting to get back in the habit. This is a good idea. I'll try it today. Thank you! 😊❤💡🎨
Yeah it can be hard to make space for the practice as you get older but thats when it becomes even more important to make space for yourself! I hope this technique helps you!
Love this video! I feel that I have zero drawing talent but I do have a strong desire to create artistically. This video left me feeling excited and hopeful.
Aww thank you so much!! Dont worry about drawing talent, the desire itself makes you a creative person! Just focus on the excitement and hope!! let us know how it goes!
Thank you for sharing this, Jeyram, I paused the video mid-way and picked up my drawing pad and scribble-sketched several things lying on my desk - and enjoyed it. I have a resistance for drawing everyday objects, and actually any human-made objects, but when I go at it without much thinking, I'm always pleasantly surprised by the recognisable drawings of the stuff I draw. I hope to keep at this.
Thank you for this advice! I always find it difficult to sketch or do dedicated practice, when I know I should. But this inspired me to pull out a notecard and draw something, anything at all. I decided to sketch a thumbnail for a painting that I want to do, and it was really fun.
Thank you! Thank you! I needed to hear this!! I've always been obsessed with the outcome having to be perfect. Your advice just seems so realistic and down to earth. Looking forward now to getting started beginning today 😊❤
What a great idea. Drawing is challenging and intimidating for me so I never really get into it-and i'm not even bad at it. 🤪 My husband, who has been creating for years, also struggles to get started. It's too much concern about "the outcome." We don't want to fail. Even if we're the only one who will see it. So I'm backing off of that nonsense and putting back the fun of it. :)
Yesss put the fun back into it! The struggle is usually emotional, it has very little to do with art "skill". At least that is true for most people. I talk to beginners that struggle the exact same way that professionals struggle, its a universal experience!
@@JeyRamm I did a smart thing: took my drawing supplies out of the closet and put them in a tote for easy, fast and portable access Having them near me makes it so much easier to start. :)
Youre completely right. I have stopped drawing as regularly as I used to, but before I used to draw all the time on small post-its, and those were and still are genuinely some of the drawings I like the most, even if they weren't great, they were so much fun to create
I kinda did this recently while I’m bored at work. For example, I read people’s reports, imagined the event in person, and drew that. I realized that I drew more than I realized; whoever as a subject as first person, or the objects or surroundings related to their conversation, and what they probably feel at the time or what they probably feel as they relay their sentences. Didn’t think too much of it, but I liked the feel.
Excellent explanation. As someone with ADHD or simply a child who didn’t get support when needed, I have always had a very visceral/physical reaction to anything that became difficult or frustrating (like drawing or learning a new skill). What a good idea! I have seen people use post it notes for redrawing parts in their sketch books they don't like, but I had not even thought about just drawing directly on it and if I like it, add it to my sketch book, if not then through it out! :D
Wow. Thank you, I'm not sarcastic 😅 I will try it and let you know how it went. Because right now whenever I want to draw I just get anxious and don't draw anything in the end... Hopefully this will help ❤
Yess give it a shot and let me know how it goes! The anxiety is natural but we can hold it more gently, allow room for those fears while acknowledging that we dont have to hold onto them!
Yeah its kind of sad but maybe a bit of force to build momentum is needed for some people Im happy that there is a path to fall in love with these crafts, even if it involves a bit of force in the beginning
I don’t think it’s all that new a phenomenon. Thank you for this. I think this is a wonderful practice and philosophy for every day life. I have been continually getting very frustrated and even angry with my results. It’s time I stopped focusing on results and started focusing on process. Play for the sake of play.
Yeah feeling frustrated and angry can become a habit, I struggled with it for a long time so I can relate. Creating room for play and approaching art in a playful way will help a ton! Let us know how it goes!!!
Yaaay thank youuu! Haha yeah I usually skip to the inking because the pencil lines are hard to see. They are literally just scribbles, it's part of my intuitive drawing process I do go into it in more depth in my Intuitive Drawing course but you dont need the course to do it. It's mostly just scribbles -> find what is interesting in the chaos
It's a Zebra Sarasa Clip 0.3! its my favourite pen If you are exploring pens I would highly recommend trying a bunch of different ones and also trying them on different papers until you figure out what you like. Art tools are very personal because each hand and human experience is so varied!
I want to cut my time spent on my phone, and i picked up reading books again. Naturally I'm inclined to draw as well, so yeah. Seems like your advice works so well.
Do you use reference while drawing, such as drawing from life? I find when I try to draw figures from life, they all end up looking the same. Any advice?
I personally dont use reference because it doesnt make me enjoy the drawing process more If they end up looking the same its either that you are being too critical of yourself or you are falling into the same habits. Try switching up the medium or starting the drawing differently. Pay close attention to your reference and try to break out of the habits that you have. Try to explore more broadly. Hopefully that helps, just keep in mind that Im giving this advice without seeing your drawings so you have to decide for yourself if its actually helpful or not!
This is what I do. I draw on post it notes. I'm now moving up to A5 and 'better' paper. I aim to be able to paint as well as I draw, one day. My drawing is as good as I want it to be. It's transitioning to painting. Grrr. I'll know when I get there, if I get there.
Ouu so this way of working helped build your skills and now you are moving onto onto larger scales Painting is def a different skill but you got this! clearly you have the ability to learn and care enough to feel frustrated, so thats kind of a good sign
i start today :) I'll use it as a little visual diary :) I think about what was the most striking thing about that day and draw something that is related to it. Today I baked cookies, so maybe I'll draw little living cookies that make nonsense, on the back I'll write a little something like the date and what I did
Yesss a lil visual diary is the way to go! Haha the english is fine! Thank you for watching and I hope this helps you fall deeper in love with drawing!
That is a real challenge, have you tried just doodling shapes and lines? If that doesnt work you can also use some of the tutorials on my site but I would experiment with not drawing a specific subject first! let us know how it goes!
How about drawing a stick person? Then add a wheelbarrow. Or have them walking a dog or pushing a pram or doing a handstand. Anything to get the lines moving 🙂
Yess which means you dont ever have to draw in the sketchpad. If loose sheets of paper gives you the freedom to love drawing then stick to that! Do whatever makes you draw more
Well you can just make marks on a page without thinking about what to draw ahead of time. This drawing I did by scribbling on the page and then finding interesting shapes and lines in the chaos! If using suggestions works better for you then def follow that but no need to have it planned out if you dont want to
Omg I was just thinking maybe I could try drawing on my post it notes to get rid of the pressure. Then I was like „nah“, jumped on my bed and opened RUclips to see this… Guys, they installed something in my brain… 💀
What do you mean that you know you are lying? I genuinely mean that you can throw the drawings out and not show people, only spend short periods of time. That can be your entire art practice!
Here's a tip... if you can see the pencil lines you're tracing over, so can we. Your advice would have more merit if you were actually doing it the way you said
what? Im not trying to hide my creative process the video doesnt say anything about your creative process not having any steps. The entire video is about loving the process and this is the way I like working
It's "every day" not "everyday". You wouldn't write "everyyear" or "everymonth". "Everyday" is an adjective that means commonplace or regularly occurring.
Thank you for empowering us with a more accesible way to practice. I go in... having lofty goals and thinking well, I haven't mastered it quickly, and give up. I did inktober for 30 days with small pieces of paper because honestly I think sometimes using bigger or good paper just limits you.
Yeah I've had a similar experience, big pieces of paper can be more intimidating

Haha yeah we dont usually associate sticky notes with drawing but try it out and see if you like it!
i start today :) I'll use it as a little visual diary :)
I think about what was the most striking thing about that day and draw something that is related to it.
Today I baked cookies, so maybe I'll draw little living cookies that make nonsense, on the back
I'll write a little something like the date and what I did
Yesss a lil visual diary is the way to go! Haha the english is fine!
Thank you for watching and I hope this helps you fall deeper in love with drawing!
Идеально!❤
I might cry, anyway...thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it😭👍
Awww thats so sweet!!! Im happy that this might have been that helpful to you!
So cool
Aww thank youuu!!!
Wait, this is genius. The fact that it's small. I could carry it everyday and won't be intimidating to bring on a train without people staring at you.
Great idea. I’m gonna draw some Pokémon
Ouuu yesss, if you enjoy pokemon then its a perfect place to explore!
BRAVO bravo bravo bravo bravo bravo bravo 🎉🎉🎉
Thank youuuu!!
But whenever I sit to draw, I don't know what to draw
That is a real challenge, have you tried just doodling shapes and lines?
If that doesnt work you can also use some of the tutorials on my site but I would experiment with not drawing a specific subject first!
let us know how it goes!
How about drawing a stick person? Then add a wheelbarrow. Or have them walking a dog or pushing a pram or doing a handstand. Anything to get the lines moving 🙂
Oh, I did this in yr 12 n put it in a book. I still have the book.
Ouu that is amazing! Have you considered doing another book of them?
If i don't want to use post it notes ?
Then just draw on smaller pieces of paper, or divide a page into multiple smaller boxes!
Good 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you 👍!
I'm scared to draw in my sketch pad and always do my best work on loose sheets of paper
Yess which means you dont ever have to draw in the sketchpad. If loose sheets of paper gives you the freedom to love drawing then stick to that! Do whatever makes you draw more
next is thinking what to draw, suggestion from chatGPT or something?
Well you can just make marks on a page without thinking about what to draw ahead of time. This drawing I did by scribbling on the page and then finding interesting shapes and lines in the chaos!
If using suggestions works better for you then def follow that but no need to have it planned out if you dont want to
Omg I was just thinking maybe I could try drawing on my post it notes to get rid of the pressure. Then I was like „nah“, jumped on my bed and opened RUclips to see this… Guys, they installed something in my brain… 💀
LOOL it was meant to be, the post it notes are calling to you!
What is he drawing?
Mostly an abstract drawing! exploring shapes and patterns
Eh...idk what tot draw so
Well what happens when you just start doodling lines on the page? just explore shapes, it doesnt have to be anything specific
You say "end result" but it's focusing on the "product." Stop creating products to sell.
nicely put but you dont get followers and clients for your process but for results. so no, it is not helpful unless drawing is your hobby
yeah my videos are for people who do it as a hobby
can i have an autistic brain version cause this wont work on me at all. i know im lying and i wont draw anything
What do you mean that you know you are lying?
I genuinely mean that you can throw the drawings out and not show people, only spend short periods of time. That can be your entire art practice!
Here's a tip... if you can see the pencil lines you're tracing over, so can we. Your advice would have more merit if you were actually doing it the way you said
what? Im not trying to hide my creative process
the video doesnt say anything about your creative process not having any steps. The entire video is about loving the process and this is the way I like working
It's "every day" not "everyday". You wouldn't write "everyyear" or "everymonth". "Everyday" is an adjective that means commonplace or regularly occurring.
Yes that is correct LOL
@@JeyRamm Thank you. Excellent vid, by the way.
Thank you
