This is such an awesome video! I remember when I decided to draw for the first time. I was so scared that I would be bad at it, and I was convinced that if I didn't succeed at the first try, I would always be bad at it. It was my therapist who convinced me to draw after a traumatic incident. She told me it would help me get my feelings out, and at first all I drew were angry scribbles. But I fell in love with it, and gradually I got better and better. I'm no expert but after all the sketching sessions from then to now, I am very passionate about art and drawing for my mental health and for fun! This channel has boosted my creativity and my motivation a ton, and I don't know if you'll get to see this, since you must get hundreds of comments, but I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this and all your other videos. You're awesome! 😁

    That's my story too.
I drew cartoons when I was a kid (mostly Snoopy knockoffs). Tried painting a few yearsago, but I never learned to draw.
I fell away from art for the longest time (I have a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems.)
I started painting a few years ago. A friend of mine gave me a set of charcoal pencils one year for Christmas (pre-pandemic). I thought, "I don't know what to do with .". So, I set them aside for several years.
A few years later, a drawing instruction video showed up in my YT feed. It was called, "How to draw anything using basic shapes." I thought, "I can DO this!"
I watched the video, dragged out Ye Olde Charcoal Pencils, and I've been drawing ever since. I'm now working in pastels, colored pencils, and watercolors too.

Oh my god this was fantastic!!! I loved every second of it, the visuals were so beautiful and charming, the music fit really well, and I loved the story!! I relate to it very much. We all need a Zoey in our lives. Although instead of waiting around for one to appear, we should all try to become our own Zoey.
I was surprised that the little girl was the one to teach the adult the lesson, since what usually happens is the opposite, and I really liked it.
You inspire us a lot Danny! I know this took a lot of effort and time, but I already look forward to seeing another animation from you, or whatever fun project you have in your mind.

Thank you for making this. I went to school as an art student. Some really bad things happened in my life and the passion to make art and draw went out of me. After years of healing, I have interest in it again. I find myself paralyzed with fear at times with the idea of trying to draw and not being good at it. It's a silly thought but I feel that because I went to school for it and have been drawing basically since I could hold a pencil, I should be good- but I am not.
I am 30yo and having to learn all over again. I needed a video like this. I am going to use my "magic pen" to start drawing again. Just for me. 💚

I feel so related to this video. I'm a late beginner too. Because I spent my youth believing I have no talent in drawing. And my belief was reinforced when I saw some other kids who did amazing drawings. But I always wanted to have a ¨talent¨ and finally got a sketchbook and started drawing. I noticed that only my first three drawings were bad. Starting with my fourth drawing they looked nice to me.If only I knew I could draw what I'm drawing today, I would start drawing in my earliest years and I would be graduated from an art school.
Everyone who reads this please don't think drawing is a gift reserved to a few people who are somehow talented. Tell everyone that they can draw too. It's a learnable skill. It's a matter of love. If you love to draw then you will be able to create beautiful drawings.

I learnt recently that we all love drawing as kids, and we are good at it. But adults, (often art teachers ironically) start to make us doubt our drawing. They tell us to draw a certain way. To make marks a specific way. They kill the love of drawing in us by making us hyper-critical of our own art work. That’s why so many adults who loved drawing as kids give up art and believe they cannot draw. It’s why we stop trying to draw and why we give up freedom of our own art styles. Once I understood this I started to let go of the perfectionism and the unrealistic standards that had been pushed on me by adults growing up. I’m 42yrs old and trying to find my art style again. I no longer say I cannot draw and instead say “I’m learning to undo the criticism so I can enjoy drawing again”. I’ve got a long way to go but feel much lighter about it. Also there is no wrong way to draw. The best exercise I was taught was to purposely draw something “bad”. Keep drawing things “bad” or “wrong”. Then look at them and see them as good. There is no such thing as wrong or bad drawing. If we purposely try to draw bad then we have already drawn what we fear and can go from there.

I am an artist, and I have the talent, but I still had to LEARN. There are principles that are basically shortcuts. For example: all things that you see are based on shapes. You sketch the underlying shapes, and then you draw the thing around the shapes. When you read drawing books or watching drawing videos, they teach you the secrets and the short cuts. Even Van Gogh struggled with drawing.

This video, the animation is so motivating, inspiring and RELATABLE. Thought it was just the magic pen that made him able to make progress, then it turns out it is based on your true story.
I always thought I was the only one who can't draw. Of course I don't actually believe I'm the only one who can't draw, but I barely made any progress that I stopped drawing completely. Eventually as I grew older (Right now I'm 15) I started reading comic books, manga, cartoons, anime, animation, tv shows, movies and animated movies that It made me feel inspired by it. It made me happy and I eventually started getting creative and coming up with my own personal story that I created in my head. Of course, I don't want my story to be just in my head. I want people to know about it too, but in animation style since I love animation. Eventually, that led me back to drawing again. Of course, again. I was still pretty bad at it, like you know. Traditional art, digital art, painting, etc (I'm pretty sure I named all of them...) But this time I didn't give up, surprisingly.
I didn't wanna give up because, I don't wanna feel like a failure anymore. Art is the only thing that I'm SLIGHTLY good at. So I kept practicing, and practicing, and practicing and eventually I made some real big progress that it made me feel confident enough on trying digital art. It was hard at first. It was nothing like drawing on paper but because I kept practicing it I was to created my first digital art ever. Of course, I'm a human being, nothing I say or believe stays up forever. A few days ago I felt like giving up. I felt like maybe Art really wasn't for me after all. But this video made me feel motivated again.
Thank you so much, Danny. You made my day and hopefully you made others too! 😇🐱🐶
Also, thanks for reading this. I'm not really good at writing, so you can expect how long it took me to write this... But yeah... Again, thanks!

I am grateful to you for creating this. Recently I have been afraid of getting back to drawing and simply holding my pencil. It felt like what if I draw and it turns out more ugly than before. I felt like I lost my passion and my reason why I even like drawing in the first place. But your story reminded me of the magic I felt when I was just enjoying the feeling of freely drawing stuff without any worries or fear. I am going to learn how to draw again even if I need to go back to basics. Thank you for making me remember of the magic!

ADORABLE! And what a great job! I quit on my first and only animation class, and you did all this in a few months! Wow. And you nailed your scene at the end, the lighting in the back was right on, haha! Too cute. I'm a long-time fan and a graphic designer/artist myself, who has embraced the sketchiness more and more as the years go by. Artists like you, Koosje Koene, Suhita Shirodkar, Paul Wang, and others have given me "permission" to art as I see fit, so thanks, and draw on!

Lovely. I sometimes taught classes to people who (think they) can't draw. I learn them everybody can do it, perhaps not perfect. But here's the secret: The way you can't draw is your style! Look at cartoonist who draw badly, yet are famous. You like them for their style. They often struggle with their lack of capability, but are happy their ideas work. Those warped bodies, they struggle with? You think that's what makes their art so special. Our own normal is what others might feel as wonder. The only think you really need to learn therefore is daring. Dare to draw!

This is me too. I love painting but thought I could never do it because they didn’t look like the Dutch Masters. One I noticed my Georgia O’Keefe sunflower that hung in by kitchen had grossly faded after 10 years hanging by a window. It was too costly now to replace it. But I loved that big bright flower in my kitchen. So at the age of 65 I found an image and traced it and painted it. It was bad but it wasn’t an O’Keefe. But it inspired me to continue. Now I’m at a stage where I want to draw. After trial and error I almost gave up. Then my teacher gave me a magic marker (lol-courage).

As I sit here trying to learn how to draw landscapes, all the shadows and trees, bushes and stuff, it looks like it's impossible. And I'm trying to simplify it too! I can draw things with life but when it comes to objects suddenly I'm lost. I cried today just trying to draw a snippet of a cliff side beach but this gave me hope. Maybe I should start with a shoe, or a flower and work from there. The voice of perfectionism in my head gets the better of me a lot and I've already put myself down for even trying to get better. I didn't have that as a kid, I drew literally everywhere (and got a few pink slips as a result in early school)

This was fabulous! I think it should be part of the curriculum in grammar schools, and maybe even in high school. 6 minutes and 24 seconds that could change the lives of our current and upcoming students, and - who knows? - maybe the world. I love the fact that this is your first video! It's so great, imagine what little kids who haven't lost the ability to draw and take risks could do, and maybe they will even make great videos.

I’m going to cry😭I always loved drawing. I went to an art school and learned how to draw properly. I was actually one of the top students. Then I chose graphic design as my college major and started using laptop more and stopped drawing for more than 2 years. Now, even though I LOVE drawing, I’m kinda scared to do it. I’m scared that I might not be as good as I was back then. Every time I hold a pen and want to draw, I just overthink too much and give up😭😭😭 I miss it so much that it make me tear up. After watching this video, I might actually give it another try💙
