What I love about this video compared to other formats of journalling is, despite the imperfections, there is such beauty in simply drawing little pictures and creating snapshots of moments we hold dear. I feel that in the future looking back, it makes it much easier for us to remember not only the memory, but the artwork's creation. I loved this video, thank you!
This entire exercise will probably have multiple benefits for the creator who is making the journal. Not just to record little fun things to remember on a future rainy day (or for family members to cherish a long time from now), but I believe that putting down these images and words most likely helps the brain to focus and clear itself of any "cobwebs" or stress-inducing things that might be annoying it at that moment. So, basically, you are choosing to focus on the specific thoughts for the diary entry, focusing on the template, on the art work ... and it all can bring some semblance of peace and clarity, I reckon. Just a hunch on my part. It is a good idea.
You've said it better than I did. Thanks for writing it out. It's exactly why I've been doing comics like these. That's what journalling does and I get to practice art at the same time:) I'm gonna pin your comment:)
It’s work but kinda easy too. Just like how you sketch buildings, Parka. looks like a lot of work when you add in all those details but you do it so often I think it’s almost easy for you now:)
I just did my first one of these comics. It was really relaxing & I’m definitely going to make this into a habit. Your diary comic is so endearing and cute, especially the warm moments that included your family. ‘’one thing that made me smile’’ was getting to watch your video :)
This video has been so helpful, i wanted to do diary comics but my perfectionism related to my art led me to spending too much time on them and burning myself out. Im excited to try doing diary comics again after this (: Thanks so much!
What you said about that little watercolor "blemish" near your head looking good, but if it was done in digital it would look like a mistake, is absolutely spot-on. I appreciate you pointing that out.
It's always a small debate in my head when colouring. Digital or natural. Digital is easier and give me more control. But I do get away with more thing with natural. And once the painting is over, the piece is pretty much complete. That's a nice feeling.
I love this! I have been using the cartoon format to keep a daily drawing practice (one square per day), but your idea is so much more engaging and stimulating. Thanks Drew, I always get so much out of your channel!!🙌🏽
@ No, not now, but I am interested in that direction. I just feel happy that I have kept up a daily practice for 3 years now. Your videos have really helped me stretch and try new things! 🌟
Your style is so simple, fun, cute and welcoming. I've been looking for an easier way to incorporate more creativity and art into my life as anxiety about creating has had me in a choke hold 😩 And THEN you added the watercolor element and my jaw dropped! Bravo! Totally giving this a try. I think I'll try and post a video about it. Thanks for the inspo!
Love seeing this method of journaling!! Been trying to get back into journaling but writing words on multiple pages is sooo boring to me! Comics are something that I’ve also been revisiting too so it all aligns. Thank you for sharing your process!
Yep I didn't know how it would pan out. But not caring too much about it turning out perfect or awesome, and not worrying that it might be just a bunch of mundane things, it usually works out haha.
I used to do that in a small notebook! Back at that time, I just thought that, I love taking photos, but sometimes I can’t. So instead, I just tried to remember the moment and drew that scene again. The best thing about this method is it makes remember the moment more, with more feelings, more thoughts in comparison to just taking photos
Yes same here. I thinking drawing it down makes us process the images and meanings, while with taking the pictures, we get an exact image but with less processing:)
I keep stopping and starting my daily drawing habit. This video is inspiring me to draw/doodle/journal daily instead of struggling to find inspiration! So true that if you just go in with a pen, you gotta just go with the flow, literally!
Oh yes, I used to wait for inspiration too. But when it comes to gleaning stories from daily life, there are more stories than we have time to record:)

Ordinary made extraordinary. That's a nice way of seeing it. I guess it's like framing a drawing. I seem to like capturing the mundane. Also the exciting parts of life. But the mundane everyday life moments can be meaningful when I look back on it later on.
Fun to watch, and good suggestions. And yes, let the watercolor do its thing... Other kinds of comic diary structures can be found in Lynda Barry's books and videos.
Thank you 🙏 This is so inspiring! I’m an artist too and love doing sketches. Now I’ve learned how to make them more personal and meaningful. Really appreciate this!
This is such a good idea, and I always forget about it. But I also like how you see it as your "journaling". I write 5 lines every evening about the day, maybe I can turn it into something pictoral which would add to my goal of wanting to draw more.
This really helped me!! I became to not watch most drawing videos because they doesn’t fit to me. Your way is just how I like it. A sketchbook is personal and it doesn’t matter how it looks. (I’m kinda sick of all the super beautiful sketchbook tours). I’ll try your way because I like the idea of a comic journal :) thank you sooooo much! (It almost motivates me to make videos on my own, but I’ll start with the comic journal. )
Haha. I know the feeling. Seeing really amazing art by artists can be awe-inspiring, and also intimating. I sometimes wonder if I will get to be as good. But then I tell myself that art isn't about comparison. It's about doing what I love, finding meaning in that, being open to keep learning new things, doing my own thing. And usually when I'm doing that, I find that I've improved some more:)
@@Drewscape-art Exactly. :) Autheticity just for yourself or myself is the best way in doing art. Even if that means I splatter some ink on the page for 'nothing'. Even if it's just a strangers smile which made me also smile. :) So thank you. This journal version is a nice way exploring mself and I'm stretching it out to my needs. :)
Love the idea so much. I usually just draw random things from my day , but turning it into a comic is so much more fun. I started it as well a while ago but somehow forgot to get back to it. So glad I came across your video.

Love the laid back, made for you style. I have found that I always have a pressure to preform so it is very nice to see othwr artists do something for themselves.
Yes I've to fight that pressure to perform too, especially when recording for youtube. And I think keeping it meaningful for myself is a good way to do art, even if no one else cares:)

Thank you for sharing your process, it's such a great gift to us who are watching, thank you! I have recently started an illustrated journal after living my whole life loving drawing and being creative but somehow I was too afraid to put my pen on paper 75% of the time. So now I'm searching for all different techniques I can try out now that I'm not afraid anymore. Thank you so much for sharing 😊
Thank you. I can relate being afraid of putting pen to paper. But then I realised I had to tell my stories. And if I don't tell them now, then when? I found it's never going to be a perfect result. But the more I show up to get it done, the more I learn and the better I'm able to do it:) All the best in your journey:)

I love your template! I'm going to try this. By the way, I tried the idea in your previous video making random color shapes and then making characters from those...it didn't go well! 😅 I think something more reality-based like this idea would be better for me. We'll see. Thanks for sharing!
Well done on trying! If you post it online, I wanna see it:) I suppose there are quite a few things to take note and balance when putting it together so it’s readable. It can get messed up pretty easily too. Kinda like juggling many things perhaps. But that’s what makes it fun too:) yes this one is more down-to-earth haha
I'm so glad this came up on my YT feed. Such an organic, liberating, and fun way of recording with art and words! Thanks for sharing.

Tina Koyama! (Auto correct strikes again)
Oh nice! Tina actually did a diary of her own! :)
