  • It's time to share my new, revised 2023 watercolour palette with you! This one is my main palette with 47 colours, and since you last saw it I've taken out 18 colours and replaced them with new ones. In this relaxing and chatty video, I'll swatch all 47 colours for you and talk to you about why I've included them in my palette. I hope that you'll find the video interesting or useful, and if there are any colours you think I'd love, given my preference for muted and earthy tones, let me know in the comments section below! Thanks for watching.
P.S. I kind of always feel that I could have swatched better in my videos, meaning that some of these colours aren't shown at their best (in my opinion). I've shared a few examples of my artwork in the video, so hopefully this gives you more of an idea of what they actually look like with a little more water added. I'm blaming the fact that I'm swatching under pressure with a camera on me! ;)

Jane's grey has the advantage of generally being easier to lift out to lighten or even remove compared to most Payne's greys if we artists make a mistake that isn't happy!

Haven’t arrived to the swatching part of the video yet, but I find it interesting how we have a common preference for some colours (usually the granulating or rich ones), but at the same time, diametric opposite! I love using vibrant colours like Quinacridone rose, transparent orange, cobalt turquoise and green gold (DS). I may be wrong, but I have this impression our background can indicate a lot of about our colour preference. Having lived in Dublin for a few years now, I can totally see why you like so much all these greys and muted colours. In my case, having spent most of my life in Brazil, I still find myself attracted to a more tropical or vibrant palette I suppose. But I enjoy watching your choice nevertheless, beautiful colours! Have many of them myself.

It’s lovely to come across someone else who has absolutely no use for all those bright reds, pinks and oranges. I was joking the other day that i am moving towards a complete palette of nothing but grey-blue-greens, and honestly i could die happy with your bottom two rows and nothing else. And that Daniel Smith Blue Apatite is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen!

Sadly, I needed to buy a couple of new paints…. which of course, everyone hates doing. You can mix it yourself with PR101 (or 2 I suppose, a dark earth red basically) and PBk11. That's exactly what it is. I know this because someone on here took a magnet to it a few years ago and PBk11 is magnetic. So the magnet pulled all of the black out and what was left was earth red. Same as how purpurite is PV16 and PBk11, that's what it's made of before it's separated after it's been mined.

This video was soo worth the wait. Your new main plalette makes more logical creative sense, looking at how you paint your amazing landscapes and magical birds. It was great to hear how you arrived at the colour choices too and how you use certain colours for certain things in your work. You are so right when you say a palette should inspire you each time you open it to work.Glad that the colours you took out found new homes with some of your patreon members. I found myself thinking when you showed us the actual revised palete that is definitly a 'Natatsha palette'. I sense already how much this revised palette of more muted colours is inspiring you. I am, doing the same thing over this bank holiday weekend. I am making a main palette of 48 colours and one of 48 metallics (as you know I love my metallics!) and a palette of 48 dark colours. All are handmade colours. A swatch book is a good idea too, a sort of useful studio tool, I have done this for ages myself. As your work evolves and changes so does the colours you use it's anatural creative progression,so revising a plalette is a new step forward on your creative journey. I have to say the A Gallo antique gold is a staple in my metallic palettes now,I love the subtley of it,and it's actually a good mixing colour too,I sometimes add it to regular colours to get tinted metallics. It's always lovely to see you swatch in real time and speak further about the colours you have chosen and the added surprise bonus of seeing some finished new pieces of your stunning artwork as well.I enjoy researching when revising my palettes too and I know you do as well,I find the process of revising a palette a lovely thing to do as well and it's also really inspiring as well and sort of meditative. I am sure this new main palette will change your artwork in a new way as you paint with it,add a new element. Hope to see finished pieces from this new revison of colours.(matt) P.S omg. how many times can I say the word palette in one comment!! and the nail poish is a great colour too an almosst art deco looking colour. I think I couldn't be without buff titanium as a mixing colour.

I'm so glad that you think it was worth the wait, Matt! Thank you. I feel like I'm already using this palette more since I changed it around. It's so important to follow our instincts with colours! There seem to be so many rules in art, and sometimes they actually feel uninspiring and can stop us from creating our best work. Only *we* know which colours work best for us or inspire us. Have fun revising and making your palettes! The dark palette sounds particularly intriguing. Happy bank holiday Monday! :)

Your muted earthy palette is gorgeous and inspiring. Love that you let go of other's expectation about what colors should be there and instead focus on what colors you like to work with. Beautiful. I think its sounds freeing to have a palette where you can paint straight from the palette. Mix if you want, but don't have to. And those colors you took out are great and can live on as a part of other palettes :)

I absolutely love the idea of a palette that is solely based upon hues used as-is. That would remove a bulk of the stress of choosing your color scheme because it pairs it down and consists of colors that all match well with each other.
I have found that mixing any brighter shade with Neutral Tint will turn it into a deep, moody hue, so perhaps that may help you in your mixing palettes.
Thanks so much for sharing your palette and swatches! 🙏😍

I have a more vivid palette, a typical mixing color palette by default, but I like to pull out certain colors for certain paintings. And currently, I'm in love with Vivianite, I discovered the existence of blue ochre in Australia and have been scoring the webs to find it. As for my palette - a lot of Rembrandt, some Renesans, some White Nights and a couple Art Philosophy - it is heavy on purples and earth tones, couldn't go without... probably Indigo, but Naples Yellow reddish, Burnt Siena and English red (yeah, love those oxides) are probably just as important.

My favorite colors from this selection are Potter's Pink PR233 (love the one from Maimeri Blu) and Cobalt Green Dark PG26 from Schmincke. They are so beautiful mixed together and I love mixing them each with Schmincke's Mahogany Brown made from the rare PBr33 pigment. The granulation is gorgeous! ❤ The Random gray is pretty but I prefer to mix my own from the leftover paint on my palette. That way I'm not wasting any paint and don't have to pay for another tube of watercolor.

I have some of the Schmincke cobalt green and didn't really like it, but maybe thinking of it as a moody "Natasha colour" will give it new life for me.
The random grey looks really interesting. I've always avoided it, as I might love it and then it will run out...

Thank you Natasha! Is it more affordable to purchase DS (or other) one tube at a time, or in various sets, or in half or full pans? I absolutely love your videos! Many thanks, kari in Canada

Hi again Kari! It's probably more affordable to purchase sets rather than individual colours, but you may end up with several colours in a set that you don't really use. I prefer to buy tubes individually and curate my own palettes. :)

    • @NatashaNewtonArt

It takes me forever, because most of my work is done outside of a sketchbook! I don't have enough time to work in my sketchbooks regularly, even though I try.

Patty-I don't have a self-curated pallette as of yet. The one color I would not like to be without is Burnt Sienna. I've lived that cold since I was a child with my Burnt Sienna Crayola Crayons. I wouldn't like to be without a vibrant blue, a warm buttery yellow, or a red violet. I wonder what type of pallette I will have once I discover my style? :0)
