  • Sub-titled "A Tale of Moral Antipathy." The author of Call of the Wild and White Fang dishes up a sinister tale worthy of Edgar Allen Poe. A performance reading by Special EFX Makeup artist Edward E. French.

Jack London could write! Really fun to find you're reading such relatively unknown works. And the ominous silence is somehow even more effective than the usual music....

Aside from your skill in reading the stories, Mr. French, the one thing I really like about your channel is that I get to discover stories I have never heard of and would not have guessed existed. Of course I have London's 'Call of the Wild' and 'White Fang', but I never knew he had written anything like this. I can't help but to compare it to Poe's 'The Cask of Amontillado'.

It's pretty obvious that London read Poe......but his take is even more darkly comical.

What a horrible story(!) very much reminiscent of Edgar Alan Poe in the way in which it proposes a fantastical situation in such a way as to make it seem feasible.
In my own mind, I have recast the ending to the obvious conclusion, whereby the dog brings its trophy back to the one who trained it.
    An excellent reading, as ever.
    Many thanks.

Well the narrator would certainly have deserved it after being such an odious, vindictive creep.

That is a wicked story! I didn't know Jack London had the inner workings an evil genius. He had some diabolical creativity. Great story. Fantastic reading, Mr. French! Thank you. I always enjoy listening to your tales.

Thanks, Ronald. London was definitely channeling Poe on this one.

Really enjoyed this one. (The illustration was a bit of a giveaway, though.) "The People of the Abyss" by the same author is a great book.

Hi Bess. Yeah, the artwork is a "spoiler." I was going to use an image of a corpulent, goofy looking guy, but went with the dog which seemed like a good idea considering the canine associations with the author. "People of the Abyss" is in my file for a future audio.....Thanks for listening. E.E.F.
