The Long Riders: Again, if Danny Peary did a fourth Cult Movies book, this would definitely be one I'd hope he'd write about. When I met William Forsythe, he asked me to seek out one of the favourite films of his, Hill's Extreme Prejudice, which he described to me as the last of the Peckinpah-style action flicks. Similarly, The Long Riders is the last of the Peckinpah-style Westerns, and makes a good companion to Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
LOL I was the same way with Fear and Desire! I love Kubrick, and based on his words, I never seen Fear and Desire, never did seek it out....and never will. The Long Riders! Fun western, has a great music score too! I don't think I will pick up this reissue. Death Rides a Horse, I've never that one, this gives me a reason to seek it out, thanks for the heads up!
I've been on a Spaghetti Western kick myself lately, and I've noticed something strange: I expected Italian Westerns to grow more violent after The Wild Bunch and with competition from the ultraviolent crime and giallo films that came out of the country, but instead, presumably due to the popularity of the Hill/Spencer films of the era, they grew less violent and even more outright comical. Duck You Sucker is one of the few Italian Westerns I've seen, for instance, that uses squibs extensively. Off the top of the head the only other Spaghetti Westerns of the 70s I can think of that do so are Fighting Fists of Shanghai Joe, Keoma and Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the latter two coming in very late in the game.
