- This is going to be an interesting video because I already had the Kino Lorber release of The Great Escape on 4k Bluray and I was very disappointed by the fact that it didn't come with Dolby Vision or HDR. So when I heard about the Cape Light German 4k release of The Great Escape and the fact that it came with Dolby Vision I thought it would make for an interesting video to stack both up together and see if there is a difference.

Hi Keith, I know exactly what you mean about it being a Christmas movie 🎄🤣🤣🤣, I think its because it was shown a lot around Christmas time when we were all younger, great movie, review as always and the comparison shots are fantastic, Patrick.
Even now Patrick nothing has changed it's still playing during Christmas and I hope it never changes. It's always those old classics the likes of The Sound of Music or the great Race. Even the Sinbad movies used to get played quite a bit during Christmas but you don't see it as much nowadays. Thank you as always Patrick for taking the time to stop by. I really appreciate it

Great to hear that you enjoyed it as much as I did Martin. It is by no means a perfect 4K transfer but I think it's the definitive way to watch the movie now and it's a marked improvement over the Kino Lorber release. As you can tell by the video I was delighted
I pre ordered this release from Capelight studios months before release. Definitely one of my favorite 4k UHD with HDR-10+ pick up's of 2023!

As always: Thanks for your insightful review, Keith. I am on the fence about buying the Capelight 4K edition since I’ve already purchased the Kino Lorber disk, just like you. And these days new releases and sales (like Indicator’s or Arrow’s) are to be factored in when budgeting for additional movie purchases when double or triple dipping. As you pointed out the features seem to be the same on both editions (and all of them are legacy features from old releases as far as I know). So, the missing HDR and Dolby Vision on the KL edition was for me of the main interest. I’ve consulted already the forums about this and there seem to be, as always, two sides: Some point out the more powerful and lively colour scheme of the German release, others say the HDR grading comes with an inherent flickering and the new colour grading would add an unnatural intensity that wasn’t intended by the DP and/or director. Today I received the StudioCanal release of The Others in 4K. This time the filmmakers demanded that no HDR would be implemented because they used natural lighting (like candles) while filming and they were afraid the HDR would detract from the intentional mood of the movie. I haven’t checked it yet. Like you I tend to expect HDR or better yet Dolby Vision with my 4K disks but as the medium is maturing maybe a more differentiated view is in order. I’m not sure about it.
Honestly it all comes down to how much you love the movie and whether or not you want to see an upgrade in color. That's exactly what you're getting with the Capelight release. I stand by what I said in the video if you don't have Dolby Vision or HDR when it comes to 4K then you're heading straight into Blu-ray territory and if it was intended for this movie not to have Dolby vision then maybe they should have just gave us a 4K master on Blu-ray because that's exactly what it felt like when I got the Kino Lorber release. I can tell you now for an absolute fact there is absolutely no flickering going on whatsoever on this 4K release. To be honest it all comes down to personal preference. Me personally I wanted to see an upgrade in color and that's what I got with this release but if you are looking for a more faithful presentation then maybe the Kino Lorber release is the way to go. It's kind of a shame when it comes to forums. Why can't we have the Best of Both Worlds. Why can't people except each other's opinions and just leave it at that. You do see a lot of hatred which is an absolute shame. Anyway in the end I'm very happy with the results and I completely understand if you stick with what you have. It's a fantastic release either way
i havent seen the great escape in such a long time. i absolutely love this film i definitely need to revisit it soon
every time me and my grandad used to watch this when i was younger he would always say "i wonder if he'll make the fence this time" hehehehe
I love watching this movie with my father. He was the one who got me into it in the first place and it was love at first sight. Great to see it get the treatment that it's gotten with this release in terms of packaging and the transfer. Definitely one to look into Curtis. Thank you so much for stopping by
Great video Keith. I'm with you on this one, having some kind of HDR on a 4k disc is an absolute MUST. I bought Bill And Ted Face the Music ages ago and as soon as I started watching I noticed there was no HDR of any kind. I ejected the disc and sold it to CEX the next day, the film just looked very flat. There is very little difference between a well mastered blu ray and a 4k disc with no HDR. Take care both of you. I absolutely agree with you 100% Gary. Like I said in the video if you do not have Dolby vision or HDR you are heading into Blu-ray territory. Thank god we got some HDR with this release of the great escape and it definitely makes a difference. Why it wasn't included on the first release I will never fully understand. Steve McQueen was a great actor but you know even though I love the Blob 1958, his acting was terrible and yet two years later he did The Magnificent 7 and his acting was brilliant@@millerman9991

Yes it seems the HDR definitely helps the contrast of the picture and corrects the colours even more.
I got the KL SKU cause it locked way better that the Criterion release but it looks like I'll be ordering this.
I'd compare the sound from both versions as the Germans have been known to foul up in that department.

Hey Trevor. Nine out of 10 times I would absolutely agree with you when it comes to Germany and audio issues. Having said that this is Capelight pictures and I find they do be a lot more reliable in terms of audio. It'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it when you pick it up yourself.

You're spot on about HDR on 4k Keith and its incredibly frustrating when its not on a 4k release, it feels like you don't even have the film on 4k at that point. You probably remember when night of the living dead didn't have HDR on 4k, it would have looked fantastic, so i never bought it on 4k yet. It good to see this film was corrected by capelight and im surprised kino lorber did that.
I remember giving out s*** about the release of Night of the Living Dead and it's not having HDR. It's nice to see Germany coming to the rescue once again when it comes to these 4K releases and it really made a difference with the Great Escape. Not taking anything away from the Kino Lorber release which I thought was quite brilliant as well. It was just lacking HDR unfortunately. Thank you as always Steve for stopping by

Interesting viewing /seeing the HDR colour upgrade and differences on the capelight version to Kino's. I have the Kino version & tbh I totally love it, even without any HDR. The picture is cleaned up nicely, there's a lot more depth to everything. The G E is 1 of my top 10 fav films. Another great video Keith and it's interesting to see what us Europeans can do. I wonder if Second sight might do their own transfer in time???
I thought Kino did a great job with the 4K transfer particularly when you stack it up against the previous Blu-ray. But for me you have to have HDR or Dolby Vision when it comes to 4k. Thankfully this edition did come with it and there is definitely a noticeable difference which I absolutely love. I would do anything to see second sight get hold of this release. I can only imagine the effort that would go behind it in terms of packaging and special features. I don't think they will get the movie looking better than what we have here. I actually completely forgot about Eden Lake. I need to pick that up myself even though the ending is absolutely brutal to it. I actually have When Harry Met Sally coming my way from the same label as The Great Escape. Cannot wait to see what it looks like

Not only did I get a discount because of my rewards points from previous orders but their shipping charges are less to the USA . Anyone in the USA that wants this media book should order directly from cape light - Fantastic customer service and better pricing and I am sure better packaging for international shipping as well.
I never thought to buy directly from Capelight. Tell you the truth I didn't realize they had a website until now. I will definitely look into it and thank you for making me aware of it.
@@millerman9991 Yes I haven’t even looked at everything they have available on the site yet, The only thing is every time you go to a different page or section of the website you need to click on the English button at the top of the page to translate the page it doesn’t stay translated as you move between pages and checking out etc... you automatically get member points for having an account with them - it just requires your email address and a purchase and then those points are applied to your next order I don’t know if you can stockpile points and wait to use them. They also have great customer service that usually gets back to you in less than 24 hours.
The Germans know there stuff, even given HDR10+ for those with Samsung TVs

I just got my two numbered boxset editions of M3gan and Duel in from Amazon UK. Exactly like the Jaws 2 release. Flimsy box (M3gan got a hole in the side), but great artwork and content on the inside. Did you order those too?

Yeah I will never fully understand labels bringing out 4K releases without any HDR or Dolby Vision. That is where the upgrade lies and if you don't have it then like I said in the video you are heading into bluray territory. Thank god Capelight gave me the upgrade that I was looking for. Been looking forward to this review, "The Great Escape" is my fav World War 2 movie, many, many memories watching the movie & one i recorded off the tv & watched so many times that i know the lines of the movie.
Love Steve McQueen & one of the first movie stars that i wanted to watch all of his movies, & i do have that Kino release so i might have to get in time for Christmas, why we don"t have a collectors edition of this classic in the UK is a major crime 🤬

There is no question about it Carlos you are getting an upgrade over that Kino release. But the one thing I will say is apparently the Kino version is the most faithful presentation. Apparently the colors are meant to look the way they look on that release. But if you are looking for something a bit different in terms of color this Mediabook is the way to go. I'm very happy I picked it up in the end and it's my preferred way of viewing the movie.

Received a 5 euro off coupon from Amz Germany the other day so went ahead and ordered the 4K Capelight. I can play back HDR10+ on my Samsung TV so I am super excited to see how this looks. One of my favorite movies as a kid. As a side note, why do some studios release the occasional 4K disc without any HDR? Do they have to pay an extra licence fee for it? I watched a few minutes of Kino Lorbers 'For A few Dollars More' 4K disc and thought the colors looked a little washed out. I also watched 'The Neon Demon' 4K (German release now OOP) which is also missing HDR and colors looked fine. Very confusing!
Apparently the reason to why the great escape didn't have HDR is because they felt it wasn't needed. I was massively underwhelmed by the Kino Lorber release for that reason alone. I'm one of these people that think if you do not have HDR then there's no point in 4k. It's the HDR is where I see the biggest upgrade. The best movie I've seen so far on 4K without HDR is probably The Others. I was so impressed by it. But I really do hope you enjoy your recent purchase of The Great Escape. I've never seen it look as good as it does on this release and the fact that you have the option to play HDR10+ is an extra bonus.
@@millerman9991 thanks for the feedback...what a coincidence- I just watched 'The Others' on 4K last week. I picked up the Italian release in a nice slipbox but unfortunately it is missing the Atmos audio. No big deal tho as I only have a soundbar...plus I got the disc for free. I agree, if paying a premium for 4K, there should be a visual improvement over a standard 1080p bluray. Having said that, some 1080p blurays still look super- I recently watched 'Sound Of Freedom' with Jim Caviezel and that disc looks better than some 4K releases I have seen!

@@garethhiggin3277 I have a mid range 4K tv so i have been told i probably might not see a difference, Maybe you see more with a Oled tv, And i believe the Dollar trilogy doesn't have HDR and everyone are happy with those films.
Have you watched Kino's release yet. Honestly you won't be disappointed. Not all 4K needs HDR, Vision. Kino worked on the colour palette & cleaning up the image to give it a more natural structure. I honestly think that it looks better without any upgraded colour. The timing and natural earthy tones are part of what make this film what it is.
