The Swiss are incredible. Every time I hear about a war or battle from this era, Switzerland seems extraordinary to me each time. With their small country in the middle of the French, Germanic and Roman/Byzantine empire. They are crazy.
Facts! They have humble begginings and a great military tradition. They couldn't afford heavy cavalry in the beggining, so they mastered the art of pike warfare. Who would have guessed that this would turn them into one of the most efective forces towards the end of the Middle Ages!

Yes, what surprises me about the Swiss is that they don't have the best weapons, not the best equipment, but each time they fight with honor. Even as a mercenary they were the last to stay in several battles. Swiss vs Swiss to defend the interests of the Italians or France. I find them incredible. They had so few resources that being a mercenary was the norm. Their mentality is quite surprising.
I'm Swiss and whenever I hold a toothpick I tell people to watch out.
