To be honest... I think batman is more of an antihero than a pure hero. And true to this video, he is the true hero against modernity. This is what the counter culture should provide. Someone forged through fire that will provide leadership and a redemption path. The fact that we don't have something like this, is the source of a lot of fail...
One _could_ make the case that Batman was the original anti-hero, but I disagree and it can be tricky not to confuse aesthetics with substance. Whether a man is a hero or antihero depends on their context. If he is doing heroic things but with a bad attitude and questionable ethical choices in a world where all the other "good" people are generally speaking unimpeachable in their ethics, he might be an antihero. But if he is doing so in a world where that is the norm, where even the best people must occasionally be cruel simply to survive, it is hard to consider him an anti-hero and more just a realistic representation of heroism in that world. An anti-hero is not just a hero with a little bit of a bad attitude but more of "5-10 steps forward 1 step back" wear that one step back is not just something crass, or gruff or even nasty, but something actually _bad_ (I guess you could say the ratio between these two is the "quotient of anti-heroism"). He is nearly always doing heroic things but occasionally he does something that is definitively unheroic because of a character flaw. It's true the image and the viscerality of Batman stands in contrast to the openly bright persona of Superman and other traditional symbols of heroism, but at the same time are any of his actions truly non-heroic or even unjustified? Obviously this depends entirely on which adaptation of Batman both on the page and the screen. Obviously the further back you go the more he is simply a traditional hero with a dark aesthetic whereas many of the modern film adaptations show him as a fundamentally flawed person doing clearly anti-heroic things in his pursuit of justice (this itself a nice seed for an entire commentary on how society sees itself, sees heroism, sees virtue, and has possibly developed a lower resolution understanding of human nature). In some ways, at least as far as superheroes go, he is the most interesting one because there is tremendous possibility for the interplay between his personality, his choices and actions, and the character of the particular instantiation of Gotham that he is in - are the bad guys really just comic book villains, or is he beating up a bunch of low life criminals but those that don't really have any other prospects or options, and is he doing so really to fight crime or to build his own Legend and work out his own demons? Is he fighting corruption or is he also spreading it by seeding unnecessary fear and cynicism. I would argue though that the original Batman, the archetype, is not an anti-hero but a "Nietzschean hero". He moves beyond the more black and white of more Christian-style heroism towards embracing doing whatever is necessary in the infinite struggles of wills and power that abtue world in order to overcome evil and restore True Justice and Balance. That means he is willing to do things that others would balk at or maybe even be repulsed by, but not in order to gratify some flaw in himself but because they are truly necessary. In that sense he may be cold or brutal but he is always heroic, but even in his heroism he must always stand apart both because of the things that he does and also because of who he is -the fact that he possesses a nature which allows him to do these things mean that he can never truly integrate into society, and so he can protect it but he must do so from a distance. In short, the original Batman has a great Darkness within him, a source of tremendous power which he cultivates, a darkness which could in principle become incredibly corrupting, but which - traditionally - he only channels in order to fight evil, even if ultimately he must live with that Darkness and thus be forever a tortured man. The heroic _agon_ is very Greek. [I think an excellent example of this is in the first Nolan film, in the scenes with the League of Shadow when Bruce finally breaks with them. They also show themselves as being willing to transgress Beyond Good and Evil to do whatever is necessary, but the cross the line, at least according to him. They are not doing only what is necessary in order to win the fight against evil but also to serve themselves, to spread fear and paranoia in order to establish their dominance - which they claim is required for the greater good but which he perceives as being instead an expression of their collective character flaw. Of course in the movie they are not anti-heroes but outright villains precisely because they invert that ratio to something like "2 steps forward 10 steps back"]

I think this could illustrate various layers of possible misunderstanding and distortion regarding Odin or Wotan through the years. I could be wrong on all of this and I don't know much about Wotan and if Jung would say they they became 2 separate 'spirits' or something.. The adoption of Christianity seems to have led to Odin gradually taking a different role (darker and more simplistic) to suit that agenda, which is then made darker and more simplistic by the Austrian guy. Jung also doesn't take these things into account and by the time we get here we're at least 3 big steps removed from the spirit of Odin, the sources not being reliable because they don't go back to the sources of the relevant time period. Snorri writes the Prose Eddas after Christianity has already been adopted I believe? I haven't looked into it all that much and it's no more than a strong hunch but it doesn't ring true at all to me. Take a look at The Havamal perhaps, and definitely look into the work of dedicated scholars of Old Norse tradition if you're interested in these things... I think I'll try to dig a bit deeper too. Unfortunately the most popular Batman movie remains TDK, which has a leftist bend thanks to Nolan. Its conception of human nature being good/redeemable in essence runs all throughout, peaking in ridiculousness when the boat of hardline criminals refuse to blow up the boat of civilians. Also, Jake Gyllenhaal's saggy sister as Rachel was the worst casting decision of all time. Two WASP gigachads in Wayne & Dent vying for such an unattractive women and it being a central motivator for their actions ruins the whole plot.
