  • A lot of discussion has been spiraling around on Riot's announcement to create a Hall of Legends and to introduce Faker as the first recipient. A crowd that says it makes sense, while another crowd says that it's way too early for League of Legends to have a Hall of Fame and especially for Faker who's still an active player today to be the first inductee. In this video, I will go over my personal thoughts on why Faker's place in the Hall of Legends is the correct choice.

If Faker doesn't make it, who does?

There are tons of players that I believe are qualified for the Hall of Legends like Uzi, Meiko, Bang, Wolf, Bengi (only listing retired players but Xiaohu is a real contender IMO). But before Faker joins? Not a chance.

@@jangb98 i feel like ambition would be more fitting to be next. he was on the team that ended the skt dynasty after swapping to jungle.

They shouldn't induct him as an active player though.
But riot knows theyll profit more now then after he retires.

Faker has to be the first one in the Hall of Legends. If his injuries decline, I can see him playing mid for another 2-4 years at a high level before he starts declining to a mid level. Then he'll switch over to support. Then he'll retire but by then the game will probably be dead. I understand the greed that's coming from Riot introducing him now to rake in the cash, but I can see a lot of justification in their decision. Faker is a once in a life time esports player.

@jangb98 granted league is a much newer game with a shorter life span, but players are never inducted until they've retired in almost all professional leagues across the world. Even the goats, Michael jordan and Wayne Gretzky don't get that exception.
The point of a hall of fame is to celebrate and immortalize the past. It's weird and almost disrespectful to an extent to celebrate a career that is still active.
Most sports have limits on who and when you can be inducted because they aren't worried about the sport up and dying tomorrow.
This demonstrates a couple things on riots part:
They aren't confident in the longevity of their game and that cash is the most important thing to them.
We already knew one of those things.
Also, the worst part of allowing active players to be inducted is it opens the possibility of "flash in the pan" players to get inducted when in the grand scheme of things they weren't hall of legend(fame) worthy, rather they just had 1 outstanding performance, year whatever it is...

can you be so confident that League of Legends will last as long as regular sports when we have references to how long esport titles last in general? there's no reason for esports to follow the traditional format of regular sports, they both share similarities in competitiveness but lifespans for both esport games and esport pro player careers are so much shorter. i remember seeing aphromoo retire and thinking about how much of a veteran and longstanding player he is competing for over 11 years. no disrespect to aphro, but Faker is the true 2003 Escalade that Lebron talked about that never had to change it's tires once.

@jangb98 riot has changed their approach numerous times. First, they didn't want to be like traditional sports, then they did so they franchised their leagues, made their broadcast follow the traditional model.
Every couple of years, they change their mind. The funniest part is that no one ever gets fired for the poor decisions that get made.
If I'm confident in 1 thing... it's that riot has no idea what they're doing on the esports side.
They sure as hell know how to sell skins and line their pockets.

The main problem is no other active player or retired player checks out all the criteria without discussion except faker so think of it as a special induction.
As for NBA and hockey, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky are the goats but hall of fame for their sports were introduced way before them.
