Dunn Purnsley got off lightly. If you combine this clip and the prior one, you can see Dunn is doing 100% of the escalating, with Chalky doing 0% of it.
Purnsley's problem was that he really wasn't half as smart as he thought he was. by the time he realized Chalky was clearly the man in charge, it was too late.
The first time I saw this I wasn't paying very close attention, and I thought Dunn was bugging Chalky because he could read. Now I realize he was bugging Chalky because he was PRETENDING he could read.

That inability to comprehend when one is being 'tolerated' out of the indecency of the situation. It's so true that thugs often misperceive tolerance for weakness. There's also the tactic of energy expenditure: why waste it when there's so little to gain. Chalky is like a lion sitting under a tree during a hot, sunny day. Purnsley, the hyena antagonist who's misjudged the situation and drawn attention to himself.
This scene encapsulates on why showing genuine goodwill and taking an active interest in other people's lives and well-being pays a lot more dividends down the road as opposed to someone who is just there to inflate their own ego and see others as mere instruments or tools for their own purposes. It's ironic, Purnsley's sole motivation was gaining power and respect yet Chalky had it all along despite and BECAUSE of his more selfless endeavors and attitude when interacting with others.
One of them hands the book to Chalky White who says which of them know their words, one does so he hands him the book and he starts reading it aloud to everyone. Lovely scene to be honest.
When chalky is naming off his people and the Second Gentleman says “Mr. White” was so fucking gangster!!! That’s respect!!!

He still could have avoided being beaten had he backed down. Instead, he tried to throw a punch even after that. Stupid.
