Really want to thank you for all the 'this is what really happens" videos this spring. Taking down trees, visually showing dividing plants, the pond, plant rescue, various contractors doing things. It really helps to see all these things and to have visual points of reference (not that I have a pond) so when I have things come up, I know I can do these things.

That has to be the most satisfying before and after you’ve done to date. The only thing missing is the sound of angels playing trumpets during the after scene. 😂 Douglas looks rather regal on the log. My favourite aspect of this video is Laura’s enthusiasm for the whole process of cleaning everything out. Going forward how often do you think you’ll need to do an intensive clean like this?

Great to see how well the fish are doing and how they’ve grown. Douglas is such a character! Great music choices to emphasize the creeping green slime monster and joyous defeat of the villain! Thank you everyone who put this together! 💚💚💚🙀😻🐟💦

    SHADE, SHADE, SHADE!! 🏖️
I also have a Aquascape pond, I live in Broward County, FL (South FL) we are a zone 10a and the same thing happened to my pond but only sooner. After 4mths of the pond going in, it looked exactly like yours.
The reason the algae bloomed so quickly is that the pond is exposed to the sun, there was no over head shade trees or coverings. You have to remember although algae can grow in low light conditions, the best way to get on top of it or prevent it entirely is make sure your pond receives shade. Algae grows prolifically under constant sunlight.
I made a comment on your video when you first had the pond installed telling you that it's too exposed to the sunlight and that you won't make it a full year without your pond being overgrown with algae! Take it from someone who's had 3 Aquascape ponds comparable in size to yours and bigger, and someone who lives in the 🌡️🔥 hottest climate... SHADE, SHADE, SHADE!!! 🏖️🏖️🏖️

Exactly. Shade. Helped ours too. And it helps protect the fish from Hawks flying over and snatching a meal, although that still happens.

We use twilight pond dye, and that is all we ever add to the water. It makes the water reflective, predatory birds have trouble seeing the fish, when they are near the bottom resting, and the pond stays cooler. It also blocks some sunlight. I do believe they want pond build customers to contract for a maintenance package, of course. The videos we see always show a yearly pump out and cleaning. Our pond in PA of ten years never gets that bad, has no shade, and we never pumped it out, only did partial water changes, because our well takes too long to fill it. We have many big koi, but no rocks in the pond except on the top edges.

Wish we had had your ecosystem for our pond. Had to clean and refill with fresh water 2x a year, spring and fall. Put all our fish in kids' little swimming pool. Had to pick a day that was warm but did not get too warm for the fish in the swimming pool. Was beautiful after each cleaning! Did so enjoy sitting by the pond in our glider bench in the evenings with my Sweetie💞 who has since passed😥💙 Ponds are so relaxing.
P.S. we had to fence, a short one, and had to add an electric "string" across the top to keep the raccoons from getting our coi😯 When our little grandson, 4, came to visit we always turned off the electric fence but one day he tried to reach over to disconnect the electricity and was shocked. From then on, it was always " Grandpa, can you turn off the shock mode?" To this day, we still get a chuckle, and he is now 16💙

I lived in the UK for 4 years and they love koi ponds. I toured so many beautiful garden centers that also had specialty koi and ponds. I built one myself but of course had to move and leave it behind but oh how I miss the peaceful and serine sounds of the water while being able to watch the beautiful koi swim. I had a big garden to help clean my water along with a uv light. The plants really helped and some spilled over the waterfall into the main pond. Such an addictive hobby!

Enjoyed the video so much today. Glad you installed a skimmer. I also gave a koi pond but not quite as big as yours. I found out that if I roll up a small piece (12”x24”) of filter pads and put in skimmer basket, that it helps collect the junk that is in the pond. I use about 2 of the pads and clean the skimmer and pads about every 5-6 days. It really keeps pond clear. Hope this will help

Hi Laura great video. Couple helpful tips as dealing with large pond. LAY A FABRIC DOWN BEFORE LAYING MULCH. This will help to make somewhat of a border/screen barrier to when it rains the mulch will NOT go through the rocks and end up in your pond and make a HUGE MESS! All the area where the electronics are the switches, the programming of the system think about using a artificial rock something made for septic systems to hide and then add some real bolders and small rocks around due to the longevity keeping it dry especially since you get winters there as well will save you so much HEADACHE in the long run. Another thing that was great was planting holes in where your rocks are for annuals and perennials and just setting your container down in the hole and then after the season you can plant them out in your landscape especially ground cover perennials so they don't take over your rocks. Good luck and have FUN with your pond. Hope these little tips help out! Take good care. Look forward to your next video!

The sight of the algae gave me post traumatic stress. Our pond was about the same size but I did not realize how quickly the algae would take over. We finally solved the problem since we lived on a lake by constantly pumping clean lake water thru the pond. Yay. Next problem was the snakes getting caught in the pumps. I was the only one in the family willing to unwrap the dead snakes inside the pumps. 😳 We also had to deal with the blue heron eating the koi. Never really solved that problem since the koi were too large to hide. We had fake heron around the pond that were motion activated and shot water but they were not fooled for long. We sold the home and we understand the new owners covered the pond 😢 but I totally understand. It definitely is a labor of love!! Think long and hard before adding a pond to your yard.

Hi Laura! You may not be aware of this, but fertilizer runoff from the plantings around the pond can lead to excessive algae growth due to a high amount of nutrients in the water. That could be the problem you’re facing. Either way, you and the crew did a great job clearing out the algae and the pond looks so much better! 💧🐠

    Looks soooo much better.
Question: Why didn’t Aquasape install the skimmer and chemical filtration system in the first place? Plus you had your water brought in for the fill last time, so why did you fill with hose water this time? Just curious. 😍

So sweet how the Koi were being affectionate😊. Do the cats seem curious about the fish? I can imagine Douglas trying to catch them lol😸.

That really looks great. I think ponds are allot of work. We had a small one with mini goldfish and they were always under the plants trying to stay out sun. Eventually they passed because I think it got too warm for them. So, I think anyone who wants a water ponds, needs to really get professional help like you did for it to succeed. Exactly what you are doing. Thanks for sharing all you've learned.

We have an almost 26 year old pond that we installed ourselves. This was before Aquascape was a thing. We have a skimmer, pump and a waterfall. Nothing like yours!. Ours requires a lot or work cleaning the skimmer filters every day!!! I can only dream of having a pond like yours. We do have koi and goldfish that winter over in there and my waterlilies have really multiplied. Your pond is just beautiful and I'm sure if will only get better with time. Enjoy!🤩
