  • Dax Flame is a youtuber, actor, and total enigma. At some point Daxflame's channel was one of the most subscribed channels on all of youtube. He acted in 21 Jump Street and Project X, and he was the subject of a documentary called Ice Cream Man created by ‪@iDubbbzTV‬ . But who is ‪@Daxflame‬ really? Is Dax Flame just playing a character?

      Jacob's visit was staged. If you can't admit that, then you just aren't living in reality. I don't think Dax is 100% just playing a character or 100% being genuine. But he has clearly told fake stories in the past (like lying about what he was wearing in his yearbook photo). You can argue that he's being completely genuine now; but, to me, it's pretty clear that's not the case.

Honestly I can relate to it lol. I mean, who would say Kaufmann was playing a character or being himself... he is the character, the authentic him is the character, or maybe, him playing the characters to get reactions is actually more telling of who he is.

    For the modern editing for comedy stuff, I don't think it's actually that different than his old videos. I think he learned embarrassment is a form of comedy. He's not totally comfortable with it, but it's all he knows. He knew how to get views. Exaggerate his feelings and desires. Get mad and embarrass himself on camera.
    Now he's older and a bit ashamed, but he's figured out he can use awkwardness and not be over the top to get views. He still has a sincere message.
    As someone who's also a bit neuro-atypical, I think I can believe that Dax has just been put in some rough situations and his mental fixations forced him into a series of seemingly logical choices that only further damaged his mental health.
    We have to remember he's in his 30s. Same as me. In 2007 it was still a big deal to put your name online. Your parents made the equivalent of social media back then sound like it was only for pedophiles. I imagine Dax did his best to keep peoples names private. This also made it less likely people in his school found his videos. He slips up a couple times but does care enough to worry about it. He invites Jacob in. Asks if he can record them. Jacob says yes. Dax realizes he wants a shot of Jacob coming in and remakes it. He reminds Jacob not to use their real names. Jacob happily agrees because this shit is embarrassing and his mom made him come.
    His mom says Jacob has to go soon even though he just got their 30 minutes ago. (Again time was cut out where they talk about filming.) Maybe Dax wanted to remake a real conversation they had about the pee incident to make himself look better. Anyway, I've been a kid, and had a mom, so I know sometimes they be forgetting shit and you only get to see your friend for a few minutes and it's super lame.
    He doesn't really get slapped by his cousin, but acting like he did and being a big baby would be very believable for an emotionally stunted 15 year old.

  • @Gunbudder
    @Gunbudder 6 месяцев назад +12

    11:09 i have a very strong counter example. i had a friend in high school named Bernie who was similar to Dax in many ways, although not quite so outlandish. I knew him for 3 years as pretty good friends before discovering that his real name wasn't Bernie, it was Dave. Bernie is a pet name that his mom gave him so long ago that she didn't even remember why she gave it to him. i learned this because his mom had gotten mad and called him Dave when she was at school to pick him up once.
    Its possible Dax is a mega genius who has crafted the perfect character since he was a kid. its more likely that he is just that way and isn't really acting. i think he played up the nonsense a lot more when he was younger, but he very obviously masks a lot better now as an adult

    This video is pretty convincing. You speak about the intentional editing of his more recent videos suggests that they are designed with comedy in mind, and I think this applies to some of his older videos as well. I remember in his older videos he would generally edit out things that he thought made him look stupid, or "bad". Sometimes it would be very obvious that he would curse, but he would edit the video to mute himself when he says it. There's also a few instances of the video abruptly cutting, and then he explains that he got angry and started yelling or freaking out and edited that part out. In one of his videos, "Freaking event DUMB!!" there's a cut at the end where he gets angry, screams, and picks up a chair to throw it at a framed painting behind him, but the video cuts right before the chair hits the frame. If Dax was being genuine and legitimately concerned with not looking stupid or excessively angry, why would he edit the video to cut RIGHT BEFORE the chair hits and not just cut the video before he picks it up in the first place? It only makes sense to make that cut if you're intending for the video to be comedic.

    I think another possible explanation is that Dax was never faking it. However, he did sometimes change up names for privacy and over exaggerate a bit either for comedic value or to match intensity of feelings. I think it’s very possible that both are true. It’s genuinely Dax but he also has a hyper specific and sometimes illusive sense of humor. Just look at his newer videos, like Deons Dungeon. Much like his friend Jacob, it’s clear every single interaction is scripted. I think this just shows that Dax believes it is best to script what would work better as an unscripted interaction. Either for comedy, or simply because he is anxious it won’t go well unscripted.

    I think it's undeniable that Dax knows there's this whole intrigue around him and that he heavily leans into that to try to create engaging content. Honestly the most amazing thing to me was how hilarious his early content managed to be, because I do think he probably was just a teenager, even though he was almost surely entirely fabricating or heavily embellishing most of the things he talked about. That's just impressive no matter how you look at it. Also, all of the other people in his videos were always way worse actors.
    But yeah, I do agree that most of how he acts probably comes pretty naturally to him, though again I feel pretty confident that he probably leans into aspects that he believes will resonate with this intrigue that people have about him, and just things that he hopes people will find entertaining. Honestly I think it doesn't work nearly as well for him as it used to, but I still enjoy keeping up with his stuff. I feel confident that entertainment around him being a Weird Guy is the primary goal of his content and always has been.

    I watch Dax's entire video diary catalogue on a semi-annual basis, so I've obviously noticed the inconsistencies about the name Bernice, but just decided not to say anything until somebody else figured it out. Jacob DEFINITELY calls him Bernice at the beginning of his 5 minute visit.
    I've seen yearbook photos of Dax, but never gotten ahold of the actual yearbooks and cross referenced names like you did. That stuff was fascinating. The combination of real and fake names almost seems to back what he told iDubbbz: the SOME stuff was embellished.
    It's interesting that you brought up the siblings too. I remember in the early days there were videos claiming to have found his sister's channel. They showed screenshots of her being in foyer and matched them to the same location in Dax's videos, proving that it was the same house. I don't know if you can find those exposed videos anymore though.
    But I remember in the early days people claiming to be close to the situation saying that (at least initially) Dax's sister was behind the creation of the character. Apparently the first views on his channel came from the sister sharing the videos with friends, trying to get the videos to go viral because of how awkward they were. Whenever we hear the mom's voice from off-camera, that was actually the sister, playing a part in her own little viral video experiment. If you listen to the voice it does sound like it could be a teenage girl.
    That explains why she calls him Bernice, because she's in on the storyline. And the reason he doesn't immediately get in trouble when he screams "MOMMM!!!" at her.
    If it was initially intended to be a fictional storyline concocted by the sister that explains why they would have staged the Jacob video early on.
    My belief is that at some point the sister left, and Dax assumed full responsibility for the character. I think he really is a socially awkward person, but he's aware of it, and aware that this is part of his appeal, and so certain aspects are still staged to play that up.
    In your video, you talk about how the student loans thing and other modern Dax videos seem to only make sense if they're being made for the purposes of comedy. However I don't think you can use anything after his conversation with iDubbbz as proof of that.
    The Ice Cream Man documentary acknowledges the fact that people are drawn to his unusual personality and that he plays up that part of his persona. You could easily say that he really is socially awkward, but after the success of Ice Cream Man, he's doing his best to make that part of him come across in his videos.
    Dax's real checkmate came this month though. For those unaware, he took a leave of absence from RUclips, then came back claiming that he was taking the time to help a homeless family, only to admit he made that story up shortly after and go on an apology tour.
    He now claims he doesn't know why he did this, but is working on making it right and seeing a therapist to get to the bottom of his behavior.
    There is now plausible deniability for any of his past stories being debunked, because you can always say that he made up the stories for attention, while simultaneously accepting the fact that he really is the way he is.
    I see that your video came out 4 months ago, and his current apology tour could almost be seen as a response to that. Which would make him a genius.
    I now believe both theories. He has an extremely atypical mind, but he's also the greatest actor of all time.

      @CZsWorld 6 месяцев назад

      I enjoyed the video, by the way.

      @iandecent  6 месяцев назад

      It's cool to see your take on things. While doing research for this video, I definitely noticed you in the comment section of every single one of Dax's vids. I think the theory about his sister starting the whole thing is for sure plausible. She herself has a long history on youtube and arguably has had even more success than Dax.
      I kind of doubt Dax's current apology arc has anything to do with my video, although there is a good chance he has seen it. I contacted him by email a couple weeks before I released the vid, and he said he was excited to see it. I forgot to actually follow up with him and let him know I finished it, but maybe he looked it up.
      btw, I didn't mention it in the vid, but there is some more evidence potentially out there somewhere. Apparently back in the early days of his channel, someone from the SomethingAwful forums got Dax to make an account there. From what I hear, he may have admitted some things or otherwise somehow shown some inconsistencies in his story. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any trace of the SomethingAwful thread. I forget what he said exactly, but Dax did allude to posting on some "stupid forum" or something like that in one of the earlier video diaries.

      A lot of the rumors from early on are hard to verify because there were a lot of people posting fake "proof" as well.
      By the way, did you come across anything about Dax deleting a video called "goodbye" where he just waves to the camera for about 10 seconds? I think I remember him uploading it, but nobody seems to know about it. I'm starting to question if it was a dream or something.

    I have a few points i want to make as ive been a huge supporter of dax since way b4 the comeback
    1. The bernice thing has been talked about to death and its crazy that people really think thats damning evidence.. a great example is as a kid, i wanted a different name, my friends did too, when we made youtube videos we pretended to have different names and made it very clear to our friends and family that when we were making videos they have to refer to us as those names. I really dont think its hard to believe that he just told people beforehand that he was making a video and didnt want his personal name out there (which he is still adamant about today). Him saying he didnt like it or it was stupid is verrrry likely just a reaction to being embarrassed that he was called out for it, you gotta remember back in the day people were absolutely grilling him and making hateful “exposed” videos and he had alot of people making fun of him.
    2. It isnt that crazy of an idea that dax exaggerated stories while also still being the person we saw. An easy explanation for the jacob video (assuming you are right and it is fake which i dont necessarily believe) is that dax had this huge video about peeing on jacob ( which i believe happened but not exactly the way explained, like dax accidentally got some pee on him at a urinal or something) and maybe dax went to a friend and said “hey, it would be funny if you pretend to be jacob and we make a video about jacob coming to my house”. That doesnt mean daxflame is an actor when it comes to his personality, because weve seen that it lines up. You can have autism and be young with his personality and still have fun when a friends over like that. Same thing applies to the cousin video assuming it is fake. Dax has recently admitted he has a habit of telling harmless lies which adds up with him still standing by things. My best friend as a kid had an extremely similar kind of autism and he acted just like dax, you would genuinely think he was acting too because when he was comfortable he was super out of pocket but knew to behave when necessary. Its very normal for people with autism to be that way. I always hated the narrative that dax wasnt allowed to have fun and be goofy at times while still having the same personality he portrays.. i feel like fact checking the dudes yearbook was kinda extra and fact checking everything someone does as a middle schooler isnt good enough proof to say his personalities fake. Just my opinion on it tho

      It's not extra for the sake of curiosity and comparison considering a major part of his RUclips career happened then. It's relevant.. You can think it's extra all you want but if you're analyzing a career and a major portion of that career happened during a time where someone can't even own their own business, yes, it is valid to check those things if you're trying to draw comparisons.

    Neurodivergent kid gets a video camera (or web cam), starts posting videos on youtube, gets popular. Thats literally it. Anything else is just over-analysis. An argument almost as old as youtube itself. And yes he's said he's never been diagnosed with anything, a lot of neurodivergent people go undiagnosed their entire life, so this statement isnt conclusive of anything - it just means he hasn't sought out an assessment.

    Ive read all three of Daxs books and watched all his vids, ive been a fan for years. My theory is Dax started off a genuinely awkward (maybe autistic) boy who was trying to make funny videos playing a much heightened version of himself in the early day. His cousin slapping him was def rehearsed, and the Jacob video too, Dax was a kid with a camcorder trying to make lore and be entertaining/funny. Nowadays he's simply an awkward guy trying to make content and he's much less heightened. I think he knows embarrassment style humor works, i think he's semi self aware of the schtick. Idk of he knows exactly why it works.

      I would say Ian is confused in his assessment, or at least uninformed. Dax was just a neurodivergent kid who exaggerated things, likely took a shot at making sketches or forming a narrative at times - and was ultimately just emotionally underdeveloped and a bit silly/chaotic. He's since mellowed out into a more calm and reasonable/mature individual, but is still clearly neurodivergent.
      I think Ian just doesnt understand all types of people, and so he's reading into everything around Dax to fit his misconceptions. Its a mistake a lot of people make when trying to explain something or someone they dont understand. And not understanding someone is also where the lack of trust ("theyre faking it!") comes from. But if youve spent a decent amount of time knowing neurodivergent individuals (or being one), then theres no real mystery here.

      I think dax probably does mostly act the same irl as he does in his videos, so I'd expect most people that have met him irl to say he's genuine. My point is he is playing a character in the sense that his videos are not made for their stated reasons. Rather they are all made for comedy or intrigue. For example, take his latest story arc where he made a video about how he was discovered to be helping a homeless family then later released a video revealing it was all a lie. This is a classic Daxflame story arc. But I don't take it at face value. I think it's highly likely that this arc, including both videos, was planned for the purpose of intriguing the viewers. I don't think Madison would concoct a scheme as outrageous as that, but Daxflame certainly would.

    I've been a fan of Daxflame since 2007. I agree that he's "playing a character" in his old videos. It's undeniable. It's not just the Jacob and Bernice stuff, but his character is *always* the butt of the joke and in comparison to so called "lolcows", the comedic writing is just way too tight and obviously intentional. In one video he depicts himself trying to act tough while telling Lisa Nova he's not afraid of her and then momentarily later screams and hides when thunder is heard in the background. And that's just one of a ton of examples.
    SPECULATION: That said, I think he's both "playing a character" AND he is "really like that" (to some extent). The character is based on himself, just exaggerated, and a lot of the stories probably have elements of truth. Based on anyone I've ever heard talk about meeting him, that seems to be the case.

And we shouldnt hold anything he said as a minor as "evidence". Cmon yall. I was a goofball kid, everyone thought i was funny (even when i wasnt trying to be funny). I think the Dax Flame of today is exaggerating his true personality a bit, but in his older videos I think it's mostly all genuine. He clearly is heavily on the spectrum and I've been around enough autistic children at my work to know their behavior and such. I have a bit of a theory that Dax doesn't actually edit his newer videos himself. If someone else were to be editing them it would make perfect sense for keeping all of his awkward moments in. I think he has at least SOME sort of knowledge that people find his stuff funny, so it would make sense that he would want to keep that sense of humor that his audience knows him for. What better way to do that than to have someone familiar with Dax editing the videos for him? That's a reach I'll admit but it's possible.

    Sure he fabricates events in his life, he's even admitted it a few times. But he isn't entirely a character. His personality and awkwardness is 100% real. That's what character means to me - his personality. And I've seen no evidence that his personality is fake. All I see is an awkward, ND kid who has gradually become calmer and more self aware, but still has a problem with lying.
    And I don't think you can infer his intention from his editing and staging etc. For example, he probably wanted to throw the frisbee at such close range so that everyone would be in the shot and audible to the mic. He put in that "is the frisbee relevant" comment because he cared more about getting the shot of him retrieving the frisbee (so the frisbee didn't just appear in his hand) than he did about the guy's comment. Thinking like Dax, maybe he even left it in to show that even if someone's skeptical of his idea, they still take part and connect. I dunno man it just seems too subjective. If I wanted to I could pick apart his videos to try and prove he's a murderer or an alien or french or something.

    He obviously just has autism. It’s not a character.

    I can't believe some people still think Dax Flame is real! It's like thinking Ali G is real! As if the name wasn't a giveaway, you only have to see a few of his videos to realise it's obviously a character. He's a comic genius, like Andy Kaufman. I guess this video must be tongue-in-cheek too! Too deep! Too meta! Maybe this explains why some people believe in things like zombie Jesus.
