Yes Denise. I totally agree with you lady. This has been a very nice summer for me. I have been knitting so many socks. When I finish a sock I always cast on for the second sock or a new one and complete my 2x2 rib for 15 rounds. Then I continue on or set it aside for later. You definitely have some unique heel knitting. Thank you for showing all of us. Take care Denise. Enjoy the sunshine. Ken

  • @Janet-ov7zx

Our brains are twinning. Last year I made up a pattern for a 72 stitch 6x2 ribbed sock with a FLK heel for Donna. (Getting that centered on the top of the foot was a challenge!) Her foot swells due to arthritis and this ribbing expands as needed, but also contracts and is snug when her foot isn’t swollen.
When I saw and felt and smelled the Drover yarn I knew I wanted to use it to do a 6x2 ribbed sock for me. Then I saw your Ig post of your sock being birthed with the ribbing, and was thrilled that you were figuring this out. Your garter stitch heel is perfect for this wonderful yarn and the overall design. So I'll be waiting for the call for test knitters, and I'm ready to knit the large size.
And I loved your segment on the Woolly Thistle shopcast! (Harping) Janet

So lovely that the pair of socks you knit out of the sunrise sunset colour was one toe up and one cuff down, because if you look at them going from one toe to the other it’s like the sock rising from the toe and then setting to the toe on the other sock! Probably just me not making sense but I thought it was cute!

I love your new garter stitch heel, Denise (and your enthusiasm for all things Soxploration). I look forward to seeing the new pattern. The tightened up 1X1 rib sound interesting too. That sock box had so many yarns I would love to try. Wish our sad old Canadian dollar didn’t get in the way, as it makes the cost prohibitive to buy from the states. I will have to look for a Canadian source. I have ordered Cozy Knits one skein advent this year- first time ever (she is Canadian 😍)! Hi Denise, I’ve been playing around with a garter heel/square turn myself recently after seeing that Stephen West is knitting a garter heel in his first pair of socks, taught to him by his friend Linda Eriksdottir (she has a tutorial on RUclips). Like you, I felt it was too long and stretchy with the usual stitch counts, and so I shortened it and used a smaller needle too. I love the look of this boxy little heel and turn, and quite excited about it, but I still wonder if it is too soft/squishy to wear well, and I’m looking forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks always for your informative videos. 🥰

Do you think the ribbing has as much stretch when the purl stitches are wrapped the “new”/“opposite” way? I love the way it looks, just not sure it will be as stretchy. Curious to hear your opinions. I hope you and your family continue to have a good summer. Thanks for taking time away to be here.

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast
      @EarthtonesgirlPodcast  2 года назад +1

      Hi Julie,
The purl stitches have just as much stretch but they are so much neater. That little extra length of yarn between the knits and the purls is totally gone but the elasticity is still there!!! I love it!!!

I'm so excited to get back into sock knitting, after a few months away from it 😁
Oh and I have a question for anyone who reads this; is there a notable difference in the sock when using 2.5mm needles vs 2.25mm? (or even 2mm?) In terms of sizing and wear 👀 64 sts on 2.5mm needles is pretty loose on me, but 60 sts is stretched out so I'm curious!

Hi VallieMC C not really an answer to your question but after watching Tracie Millar ‘grocerygirls’ I started out using 2.25mm they fit me great on a 64 sts sock but I recently knit Andrea Mowry’s EverydayDRK socks and they are a 60 st sock still on 2.25mm. They are a ribbed sock but they are the best fit for me. x

Thanks so much for your question and for being here. I used to knit socks on a 2.5 mm needle and it was loose for me also. When I knit 64 stitches on a 2.25 mm the fit was perfect. 60 stitches on that size needle would be to tight hence the stretching. If you’re using a heavier fingering weight then I would do 60 stitches. There’s so many tweaks and changes you can make to get the right fit it really does boil down to knitting a lot of socks, experimenting, and finding the right combination that works for you. I wish I could give you an exact formula but that is specific to each sock knitter and they’re feet!

I have a question. I love shrug socks scrunched down above my boot tops. I have been considering how to go about it. I’m thinking of beginning with the next size up then decreasing the amount of stitches in the row before I start the heel to better fit my foot. I also struggle with a bit of edema in my legs and want a less binding fit from the ankle up. If you have a better suggestion it would be much appreciated. Many, many thanks! ❤️🙏🏼❤️

    • @EarthtonesgirlPodcast

I think you have a solid plan Linda. You may have to experiment a little to find the exact fit you're looking for. You can also try a DK weight sock pattern. The "squishy" fabric may feel good and fit well over your edema.

      Hi Connie,
That is a tough question to answer because there are so many great options. I tend to suggest individual patterns (there are tons of beginner friendly options on Ravelry) and RUclips tutorials.
You can also check your local yarn shop or bookstore and explore.
And no, I have not written a book though I do have patterns available on Ravelry and my website, earthtonesgirl.com as well as tutorials here on RUclips.

Not sure I will be adding that tutorial to my list but the basic idea is you’re going to treat the toe shaping similar to that of a mitten. So when you’re ready to start the toe shaping divide the stitches, enough to cover four toes and then enough to cover the big toe, if that is the split you’re looking for. I did find a tutorial for a toe up version. You may find some pointers in that that may be helpful.
