Diesel Therapy Session - First Mow With the Cub Cadet 882 (GoPro)

- Back by popular demand (at least according to the poll I did last week), another GoPro mowing video....the first OFFICIAL mow with the new Cub Cadet 882. We'll call this one a "diesel therapy session"...I could listen to that Kubota D600 all day long. Sounds even better now that I turned the muffler 90° upright. Looks much better too, in my opinion.
Three weeks ago, the 882 quit cranking when I turned the key. I blamed it on the worn-out 7-year-old battery and corroded cables, and got a new Mazda Miata (8AMU1R) absorbed glass-mat battery (per request of Liam @Cunningham's Cadets), along with some 2-gauge battery cables. Also wired up a second ground cable and attached it to the rear engine lifting eyelet bolt (recommended by Cub Cadet in a 1987 service bulletin). After wiring up the new battery, it still would not crank. I just happened to find the brake pedal safety switch loose and dangling under the tractor, which explains why it would not crank over. Re-installed the brake switch, cycled the glow plugs (which now heat up much quicker with the extra ground cable), and it cranked up instantly after 3 weeks of sitting. Looks like I may not even need to do the gear-reduction starter upgrade, at least for a long while. The new OEM starter isn't as bad as I originally thought.
Before this all happened three weeks ago, I tried mowing with the tractor and ended up breaking the mower deck tensioner spring and secondary belt after about 20 minutes. After cleaning up the deck, replacing the torsion spring, pivot/shoulder bolt, and belt, greasing it, and putting a sharp set of high-lift blades on it, it was ready to mow.
Surprisingly, the 44C deck cut very well and laid down some really nice stripes. These older Cub Cadets were not known to have the best cut quality (they don't move much air), but this one did a nice job once I got the height adjusted properly. Aside from the first few hiccups, the 882 has really impressed me and I am excited to find other uses for it around the yard.
Mowing starts at 4:45. Sorry for the long-winded intro.
MichaelTJD60 that thing mows great can you perhaps mow with the 318
@@millerslawnservice7656 Don't have a deck for it currently. I'm picking up a nice 50" for it in a couple weeks.
Lost it after Fed-ex left you hanging 🤣 That tractor is pristine, always adored Diesel Cubs. A diesel super is my dream, one day. Great vid!
Lol glad you got a kick out of that! I still am not a fan of FedEx to this day. Thanks for watching!
I’m going through a kind of stressful time and I found this video. It actually made me feel a little better and I want to go ride my JD 430 around just to listen to it and make nice lines out in the yard.
Glad you found the video useful - things will get better for you real soon. There's just something therapeutic about making stripes with these things....especially if your tractor is a 430.
That thing kicks butt
I just got a 149 that’s pretty nice I have it almost 100%
Going to put the rear lift on it
Love the diesel power on yours might have to keep my open for one of them
Cuts really well. I like old tractors because the decks don't spin at the ear piercing speeds that new tractors do. My 48" deck on my 520-H stripes really nice. Love that diesel, next tractor I'm looking for one.
Thanks Craig. It's pretty neat how these old decks cut really well at such a low speed and with very little airflow. This one really surprised me. Good luck in your search for a diesel.
The exhaust flipped up looks great 👍
Thanks, I agree.
Yeah it does the Kubota diesel is nice too.
@@max_murphy2511 and now the noise is right in my ears lol. I love it though.
You’ll have to watch, I have a 1512 that someone left outside with the exhaust flipped and the head is trash now
My grandpa has that same mower when I was growing up. I cut a lot of grass with that mower. I wish I still had it.
Dont forget that battery strap buddy and the rubber matt underneath, my friend had his battery slide and partially tip and short out his stater ,, im 100% john deere you know , but that is one sweet diesel cub really nice , and dont worry you will get all the little gremlins worked out, you always do and make sweet machines..
Yep I definitely need to get a battery hold-down and mat for it. The tops of the posts are way too close to the hood. The new cables came with covers for the posts but they are too small.
@@HartingFarms Good idea.
The wiring looks a million times better (and more professional) than before, Mike. Reminds me that I need to clean the wiring up on my 212 before I put it back to work
Thanks Jerry. Ever since I lost my first 316 to an electrical fire 4 years ago, I've been very picky about making sure the wires on my tractors are properly protected and routed so nothing grounds out or short-circuits.
There's just something about the way those Kubota engines sound, it's music to my ears lol. I was quite impressed with how nicely my 1772 cut my yard. Cub Cadet built some good machines.
That's for sure. They really hit a home run with the CCC/MTD models in the 80's.

Excellent job Michael
Thanks Dean!
That 882 does a good job mowing. That would be a cool one to see at PA plowday
She will be at plow day eventually. Just not anytime soon. Depends on how long it takes me to find and install the rear PTO kit on the 782 because then the 3-point hitch from that will be swapped over to the 882.
I own a 1984 782 d diesel cub cadet it is a great mower I loved it
I would like to have a 782D someday. I sold this 882 and have regretted it ever since.
When it comes to electrical sometimes it drives you nuts. Always seems like it was something simple you overlook after you spend hours on it. I spent hours on my 782D before I finally figured out my charging issues. I read somewhere about using a Mozda battery, But I forgot all about it. Looks like it cranks it over pretty good.
Yeah I would highly recommend using the Mazda battery if your 782D or 1772 don't already have one. It's a lot of battery for its size and seems much more durable than the lawn and garden style batteries.
How does the 44 inch deck cut compared to any of the JD's? Preferrably compared to the 46 inch deck on the 210 and 300 series. Also are you going go get the 46gt deck hooked up on the 782 Onan pretty soon?
It's pretty much the equivalent of a JD 46" deck. Not the nicest cut quality, but can be made to cut nice if high-lift blades are used. These are great for rough-cutting as well. I need to get the engine back in the 782 and get the PTO working on it first, but I am eager to see how that 46GT deck compares. I'll have to compare it to the 50" I am getting for the 318.
Looks like that power steering makes things a little easier with stripping the lawn! I can't find no diesel cubs around me but thinking hard about a 2082 cub it has the 18 magnum in it but does have front hydraulic outlets and power steering. Thanks for the video!
Believe it or not, this one doesn't have power steering. It's not too bad to steer as long as you're moving...certainly doesn't help that I have to make a 3-point turn at the end of every pass lol. It might get power steering someday...I have to finish the power steering install on my 782 first! You would really enjoy the 2082, they are a beast of a tractor.
Great lookin tractor
Thanks, I love it
Nice!🤠👍🚜
My Grandmothers .ower has easily 1,500 hours on it and runs like a champ its a 15 year old Woods Zero Turn.
Love the tractor
Loved the mowing video!! But one Question. What happened to the side of your truck?
It lost a battle with a tree about 3 years ago. Had a minor "tornado" come through and the tree blew over and crushed the fender. My truck is a beater so I wasn't too worried about fixing it.
I know the whole point of this video is the mower, and it is quite nice. But just, that grass man. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a but jealous
Thanks! We finally managed to contain our crabgrass and nutsedge problem this year so the grass actually looks half decent. I need to overseed a few of the dead spots.
What’s cool is you don’t have to mow at WOT since it’s got a radiator.
Good point. It's nice not having to worry as much about overheating, compared to an air cooled engine. But I like to run them wide open anyway. These older decks don't move much air and need as much blade tip speed as possible to cut well. And it also helps cool the hydro pump since the fan is turning faster.
Beautiful, I have a channel that I posted random videos on and I have a 520H it’s a wheel horse and I know your a Deere and cub guy but it’s really nice. Fully serviced runs amazing
I love those 520H's. Would like to own one someday. My neighbor has one for sale but the electronic ignition module is bad and the engine has to be pulled. We used to have a Wheel Horse dealer in my town years ago so there are a handful of them still being used around here.
Nothing beats my reel mower in terms of stripes, badass tractor though
Would be pretty cool to have a reel mower attachment for one of my tractors. They're hard to find and expensive, but they cut nicer than the traditional mower decks.
@@MichaelTJD60 Yeah,I've seen them come up on my local craigslist a couple of times, however most of them were beat to crap. That is also very true they do cut better.
@@deathlikereviews6648 my buddy has a flail mower on the front of his John Deere 120 patio tractor and it's a pretty cool (and rare) setup. I'd hate having to find parts for it, though.
@@MichaelTJD60 That's really neat, unfortunately I don't currently have any tractors,Id love to have a John Deere or Cub again at some point just can't justify the cost right now though
Nice unit. I'd like to put a deck on my dad's 1512 and see how that does (probably the same :D).
1512 is the same tractor as an 882, so as long as your blades are sharp it should mow well. I'd recommend installing a 46GT mower deck if you can find one - they move a lot more air and typically leave a nicer cut.
@@MichaelTJD60 I have a 46GT as well
I had a 882 10 years ago.. wish I still had it..
I ended up selling this one and miss it very much, but I will definitely own another one someday. If I'm lucky, it will be a Super diesel like a 1572 or 1772.
@@MichaelTJD60 I was sad when I heard you sold it. Would’ve love to have seen it plowing but we get to see the 782 plow and that is a unit for plowing!
@@trucks_n_tractors_6335 It really pained me to sell it but times were tough. IMO that tractor would have been too nice to put a plow on...it was so original and I could tell it never really worked hard before I got it. I probably would have had to cast iron rear swap it to make it a good plow tractor since that aluminum rear end was too light.
My starter got lock up won't crank. It's getting power from battery to Solenoid to starter. Slowly turn. Took it out and play with it and it barely moves. So starter was lost could be the bearing got bunt up. Plus the Bakel lite plastic on the bottom of the starter assembly broke while holding the bushes until spring tension. I have a new starter since that was my birthday b&s oem from amazon. Works now and like the metal plate on the bottom is better than the plastic. So that's my update on my Cub LT1018.
Glad the new starter fixed it. And at least the starter on that machine is easy to get to. On this 882 you have to unbolt and lift the engine up a couple inches to remove the starter. I thought I was going to have to replace the starter but I'm glad that wasn't the case.
Time for tug of war vs the x570
Was the second set of hydraulics added on aftermarket? I didnt think the standard GTs had dual hydraulic levers.
@@JoshAllen17Goated Factory dual hydraulics on the 782D/882/1512 diesel models, and the 1712/1812 as well. They were optional on the 782 and 982.
@@MichaelTJD60 Ah ok, thanks for the info!
I’ve had starting issues with both of my Onans, both involved a damn safety switch... Man, this makes me want to look for a 430, but I have no money, lol.
I guess we've all had those days lol. My '84 316 was cursed with safety switch problems...I don't miss that tractor at all. lol
What year miata did you get the battery for and where did you run the 2nd ground. I'm having the same issues with my 782d
I think any year Miata battery should work. They all use an 8AMU1R battery as far as I know. I attached the second ground where the lifting eyelet bolts to the head on the back of the engine. Just a 12mm bolt and I used a 19" 2-gauge cable.
Those pesky safety switches. They get you every time.
Oddly enough it was the only switch that the previous owner didn't bypass. Lol
the same thing happened to my spring and if you think im buying a new one u got me fucked up. i just torched tf out of it with a stick welder
looks like cub cadet has always cut pretty nice. i have a 2004 lt1018 with a 42 inch cyclocut deck and it does really well
I haven't had the best luck with Cub Cadets when it comes to cut quality, but with sharp blades this one cut really well. I did a lot of mowing in the past with a newer LT1024 and GT2550, both with 50" decks, and they never impressed me. But everyone's experience will be different...depends on the terrain and type of grass.
Did the mower come with it or did you buy it on ebay ?
@@travisgallant4013 Mower deck came with the tractor from new.
@MichaelTJD60 oh nice I love them old tractors they're better today's lawn tractors they're all plastic
I had a Deka battery on my John Deere. Lasted 11 years. So guess what I replaced it with? Lol
They're all I run anymore. All my tractors have Deka's. Made right in Pennsylvania, and I have a local mom-and-pop dealer that gives me a good deal on them.
Only place I could find one around me was Lowes.
I love ya Michael, but this vid should have been about 6-8 minutes long. Not almost 45 minutes long. Thank the lord for being able to FFWD. Nice tractor tho. I recently acquired a couple 1572's. Although ATM they do not run, but hopefully tomorrow I'll get one of them running. Thank's for really really really long vid.. 😆😂🤣
In my defense, this was back during COVID when everyone had nothing better to do than sit inside all day lol. A few people said they like the longer mowing videos for the ASMR feel, so I stuck with it. I'm hoping to get a 1572 or 1772 here soon...I miss this 882 badly and I want one with power steering.
@@MichaelTJD60 I got the one 1572 running, but unfortunately it's puking out water & oil out of the exhaust. 😒
So now, I've got to see if the other one will run.. 🤞🤞
Wow you have a nice house
Thanks. It's currently being rebuilt after some heavy tornado damage last summer.

No problem
I had one of these and wished I never sold it.
I ended up selling this one due to financial constraints but I wish I still had it. I don't regret selling most of the garden tractors I acquire, but I certainly regret letting this one go. I'll have another one someday.
Does that have power steering?
No it doesn't. It steers surprisingly easy though.

I like Toro or John Deere( x300 series or higher) or high end commercial mower brands like scag exmark or Kubota my choice in engines would be the well made kohler engines not the crappy one's
Or Kawasaki or Honda and Briggs vanguard engines my favorite vintage garden tractors are allis Chalmers wheel horse John Deere ih cub cadets or 82 series sears suburban or gravely tractors the list goes on not a big fan on mtd I subscribed to your channel to keep the videos going
Up to the Cyclops tractors they were still very rugged. I think after that is when they went downhill. The Super Garden Tractors in particular are total tanks.
Thanks for the sub. Like Justin said, the Cyclops were the last truly "rugged" models that Cub Cadet made...they were the last series to use the 82 series frame and components. They really cheapened them up after 1997.

MichaelTJD60 c’mon an you gotta make it cool I have been in the market for diesel garden tractor but can’t find one in my area without it being ridiculously over priced
I would rather mow with a diesel tractor vs gas diesels are quicker and more fuel efficient and my kubota g5200 lays down nice stripes
Not really quicker but definitely more efficient.
