Mowing the Lane With the 1989 John Deere 318 (GoPro)

- Thought I'd give the GoPro a shot once again. I had to keep up with some overgrowth in the old farm lane next to our house. I hadn't mowed it yet this year and since I still use it frequently, I do my best to keep it clean. I really could use a rototiller, but for now I just go through in the winter time and use my 54" blade and Brinly plow to plow the weeds under and grade the dirt out smooth. I took Jimmy's 318 out and put it to work cutting down the tall weeds and lots of poison ivy, which I'm highly allergic to. This also involves climbing the hill and cutting those weeds down. The 318 and the 210 both climb right up the hill without much trouble. Just goes to show how tough these old Deeres are when it comes to doing grunt work. The brush cutting is the only reason I haven't upgraded to a 50" deck yet...rumor has it the 46" decks are better for cutting high grass and weeds. I think the 46" deck is due for some Gator blades. Enjoy the video.
I just picked up an '86 318 on Friday. Came with 46" deck, plow, wheel weights, and a metal cart for $1000. Engine hasn't even been started after the rebuild. The tractor was brought into a high school shop for the overhaul and they just never completed the final assembly. I got tired of seeing it sit there and called the original owner and asked if he would sell it. Hours are 1071.
Great deal for $1000. Hope it turns out to be a good runner for you. Onans are very forgiving engines if maintained properly and rebuilt correctly (not just slapped together).
5:00 YEET!
What tractor is that in front of the shed? I'm so excited to get the 214's
It's the 210 with Brinly plow hooked up.
My dream...
I have a(I think) 1969 J.I. Case 442 PK at my house, it needs a new carbuerator and starter motor :/ (12 horse kolher gas) it is hydraulic drive
Dude that's steep! I get concerned about hills like that on my quads and such, 'deer handles it like a beast.
Yeah it is really treacherous to do with a rider but you get used to the steep hills pretty easily. My uncle rolled his 318 going across a hill that steep so that's why I only mow up and down.
Yes same, we have a huge (and steep) drain field which I mow with a rider, I go side to side at the very bottom where it barley steep and then I drive up to the top and go straight down not pressing the gas and DEFINITELY not pressing the break (otherwise...🚜🙃🤕🤕💥) And just let gravity bring me down the hill, never once had a problem or felt like it was going to tip
Tractors Trucks and Pups my 210 is hard to coast back so when I get to top I put in neutral
It looks and sounds like the John deer 700 series something premium tractor xD (edit: I found it john deere 7530 premium Hahaaa one of my fav tractors)
That's a really nice sounding engine, doesnt have that peircing "lawn mower" sound, sounds more like a real tractor, is it a twin?
Yes, Onan 18 HP horizontal opposed twin. They sound like a small diesel tractor under load.
What did you do with the 316? I don't see it sitting on your driveway anymore.
It's sitting in the corner of my garage and I'm slowly taking it apart. I'm gonna tear into it once school is over in a few weeks.
First off does the 318 support wheel weights and if so does the 318 your using have wheel weights? Wheel weights make it safer to go on steep slopes.
Yes it will take wheel weights. My wheel weights are on my other tractors. Wheel weights would not help in this case because it would make the front end lighter and cause it to flip over on top of me while climbing the hill, if the rear tires start to bite. Wheel weights are better for mowing side-to-side across hills. The 318 itself is heavy enough to keep from flipping over anyway.
+MichaelTJD60 To make it go length wise instead of up and down.
I wouldn't do that on a hill that steep. My uncle rolled his 318 doing that
GG mate
YOU still got that tractor buddy
Not anymore. Returned it to my buddy when I bought a 316 and I just sold the 316 a few weeks ago.
Man I'd love to get a 318. But man where I'm from they are spendy.
Yeah they are, but it just goes to show you how these tractors stand the test of time and hold their value. It's also true that if you buy JD parts you basically pay for the green paint. But it's worth every penny. Wish I could have kept this one, I was only borrowing it from a friend to use after my 316 burned up. I paid $1400 for the 316 and thought THAT was a steal, just for reference.
I see. I'm a cub cadet guy but I love the John Deeres too. I'd love a JD 140 H3. Or atleast an H1. Or a 318. My buddies parents have a 318 and a 420 with a hydraulic loader. They ended up paying 5k for the 420. I'm building an Small Block 88 S10 otherwise I might consider a nice 318 or something. Lol
They are all great tractors if properly maintained. I love the old Cubs and Wheel Horses but don't know too much about them or getting parts for them. Otherwise I'd definitely buy one.
Show more of the 210 please. - Ethan
I will in a future video. It needs a big update.
+MichaelTJD60 I can't wait
? Why mow the farmers field? Love my 318!
Just mowing along the edges so the whole length of the lane is still accessible. We've cleared the two fallen trees out of the way since the video was taken.
Ya I would even like to get a 316 but my John Deere lx277 aws is working really good, does anyone have a lx series tractor because I am having a few problems with the deck
I have an LX176. What problems are you having?
MichaelTJD60 well Im not sure when u drop the deck the deck wheels are suppose to be on the ground or not, because when I change the height with the dile It doesnt change the height of the deck
Because I dont really want to wear out my $40 deck wheels in a couple of months
You don't want the full weight of the deck resting on the gauge wheels. Those gauge wheels are supposed to be 1/4" to 1/8" off the ground. You'll have to check their height on a level surface (garage floor or paved driveway). They aren't supposed to roll on the ground full-time. They're subject to wear and tear, so they will wear out over time.
MichaelTJD60 oh okay thanks, I am restoring a John Deere 108 lawn tractor with a 30 inch deck with a missing discharge chute, I am selling it and I need a discharge chute because I dont want the new owner to chop their foot off, do u know where I could get one of those chutes for a 30 inch mowing deck
It looks like you need to get a chainsaw to that lane in order to open it up a bit.
Yeah the branches were getting pretty heavy. About two months ago I went through and cut down most of the ones that were getting in the way.
I uploaded a video in November of me mowing this same lane with my other tractor and you can see all the branches cut back. It looks much cleaner now.
It’s lawn or did u mean lane lol
Lane. lol. We've called it that for 60+ years cause it was a dirt road up until about 10 years ago.
Get a z rider tractors are way to slow
Too slow? Are we racing?
Also, a zero turn would probably be the worst choice for a slope as rough and steep as this one....wouldn't want to mow brush and saplings with one of them either. A garden tractor will handle it no problem.
@@MichaelTJD60 keep telling yourself that my hustler mower would handle that yard in less than half the time
@@clarknawrocki9718 if you can't tell, I'm mowing brush along the edge of the woods...not mowing a lawn here. No competition whatsoever. Let's see if your Hustler lawn mower will still be around in 30 years like this 318 garden tractor (which was built specifically for this kind of work). You're basically comparing a car to a one-ton pickup truck.
