"When you don't know about chords, you make them up, and now everyone thinks you're a jazz guy"
-Mac Demarco (paraphrased)
Brilliant

jazz is an attitude
DUDE PLEASE JUMP SCARE WARNING ⚠️ THAT LIZARD REALLY SCARED ME IM HIGH AF TRYNA SOUND LIKE MAC
Awesome video! What keyboard are you using?
It’s just a midi keyboard feeding into GarageBand. On GarageBand I have it set to “Classic Electric Piano”
Great Video! Would Love to know more about King Krule! Greetings fromm Berlin
what keyboard is this?
Why en 7:44 you say IVmin. El IV grado no es mayor? Teniendo en cuenta que el primer grado es mayor. Necesito ayuda. Soy novato con tema armonía. Thanks
Please can you analyse and explore the music of Steve Gunn...
nice video, can you analyze luis alberto spinetta_?
Do Arctic Monkeys please
Sería genial tenerlo en castellano
Analyze Pet Sounds!
Tall task...
Please do Jakob Ogawa or banes world
I wish you were my piano teacher
Great vídeo!
Thanks!
Please cover The Cure!
But great intro good job
analyze men i trust
Very interesting! Mac DeMarco is even more of a brilliant song writer than I thought. I really like this series of music theory videos on indie bands. You're a great teacher!
Thanks! I couldn't agree more - he's a songwriting master.
king krule
I find it crazy that mac figured this out intuitively; what a nice set of ears that man has
Undoubtedly so
Where'd you go, dude?
Cool
What keyboard are you using?
Just some default GarageBand keyboards
SUUUUUUUBscribed.
what's the name of that bosa nova singer?
João Gilberto!
First
Man I’ve been using diminished 7 chords in my music without knowing it
Looks away for 5 seconds...

Really underrated channel this is sick. You should look into Frank Zappa imo
Thanks! He's got some wild stuff, not sure my mortal mind can handle it ;)
@@tonton_bkg or maybe my fav band sticky fingers? What I've seen they've got some quirky chords I don't fully understand
Great video. Would you make a video on the eeriness of King Krule's music?
Highly likely, I've been getting a lot of requests for his music :)
great video for us song writters, you got a new sub here
Glad to hear it! Thanks :)
This is awesome useful content. Way better than how to ripoff Mac demarco in garage band. Actual harmony analysis.
Great Video man! Maybe get a mic to clip onto your shirt, so the sound is as great as the content :)
you look much more confident since the Tame Impala video, kudos. Great content!
Thanks 🙏
Dude this work is great.
Could you please do an kinkg krule video pls?
That's a great idea! I love King Krule, even got the chance to see him live in Boston a few years ago :)
What an awesome pick of a song to talk about and learn from! So happy to see someone's analysing Marc DeMarco's harmonies, Thank you :)
Greatly appreciated. With songs like his it was a no brainer!
Thought my mans had Like Vines by the Hush Sound on the left of the screen. Awesome video man! Super insightful. I love learning!
Nah man that’s Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon (Mac Demarco’s favorite album if I’m not mistaken)
You rock!!!! Wow! So impressed by this. Please do Rex Orange County. Think that can be a good video for you to make.
Wow man, what a great video you've done, please keep doing videos explaining jazzy things, I really liked your explanation of the topic, and if you want in the future please do more videos about Mac Demarco's compositions. I'm glad youtube recommended me this amazing video, thank you and as Mac would say god bless you
hell yeah dude nice video
Thanks!!!
Amazing, viceroy was also my intro to this mac fella. There must be dozens of us
Quite the fella
great analysis, great teaching. i think Mac would like this.
Nice to listen to someone explain a musical topic who doesn't give a hoot whether you understand what he's saying, or not! That's not arrogance, it's just being uncompromising.
Saw Demarco live in 2016 though i was there for Tame Impala and I fell for his charisma and nonchalant style.
Should check out the band inner wave to analyze! They have great compositions
CAN YOU PLEASE BREAKDOWN HOW ON THE LEVEL MELODY WAS MADE?
It’s just chord tones that fit in each of the maj 7 chords he used. It’s definitely my favorite Mac song but one of his simpler ones. I’m pretty sure there’s Piano tutorials on RUclips and learning the relationship between the chord and melody will help figure out how to make something like it. Only Mac can tell you how he came up with the idea. He says that he just messes around until he finds stuff he likes, but I’m pretty sure he knows his shit and is only saying that to maintain his image.
@@landon8390 yea i guess it’s simple since its a bit repetitive but the chords bass and melody are not in the traditional form it seems like the bass is not the root note and the melody doesn’t seem to follow the chord that plays underneath it
Do God Only Knows!
You should do a video on Unknown Mortal Orchestra!:D
Love the video man. I am a huge mac demarco fan and I couldn't find any video regarding to harmonic analysis. I really enjoyed it, thanks a lot :)
So happy to hear it! Thanks 🙏
I don’t want to know this!
What is that album on the wall? I'm in love with the artwork
John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band. Mac’s fav if I’m not mistaken...
@@tonton_bkg thank you!
That’s what I call a good use of graphical explanation, which your videos lacked before. This channel is growing into something big everyday! Keep up good work
Thanks! I wish I could take credit for the graphics but they were done by my great friend Gil Harari - super talented dude.
Very interesting video! Gave you a sub. Could you please do a analysis on old Suede songs? They have some very uncommon harmony in their songs
Suede are great? Got a specific song you were thinking of?
@@tonton_bkg yeah, especially the first two records. For example Breakdown, Black or Blue, New Generation etc.
A video on homeshake would be cool! Peter Sagar used to play with Mac.
I really like your breakdown, it’s very helpful and the way you explain it is really easy to understand. Keep up the good work. And could you do a video on men I trust
Love the way you explain things can’t wait for the next one
These deep dives are really great, could you consider doing a video on John Maus? his use of medieval sounding chords and scales are really interesting.
Never heard of him to be honest, I'll check him out!
Great job- check out her’s- lots to analyse in their chords to
you should analyze a small indie duo called "easyday". they just released their first album and literally every song sounds different. you dont know it's an easyday song until you check. there are so many different genres in their 10 song album "In The Beginning" like indie-rock, indie-pop, indie-funk, indie-folk, hawaiin/beachy, and even LoFi!
Super interesting. Waiting for more!
Hey! Rlly rlly rlly cool video, helped me understand Mac just a smidge more, if ur looking for bands to break down give mustard service a listen, if u like Mac you will like them
I love your content!!!! Do something bruno mars
('Leave the door open' or anything
What type of keyboard is that my dude? Great video by the way
Just some janky Yamaha keyboard that I plugged into my computer. I’m using it as a midi controller but the sound itself is the GarageBand electric piano preset.
@@tonton_bkg i have an even yankier keyboard with Midi in and out, my midi to usb converter doesnt let it work in the DAW i currently use though. Maybe its time to update to a less yanky cranky keyboard 😅. Keep the videos coming btw, theyre too good!
@@versnellingspookie ‘ppreciate it
This video provides invaluable information. I cant express how insanely awesome it is to have you explain WHY my favorite songs are my favorite songs. There’s so much jazz hidden in indie especially Mac DeMarco. Thank you sir
By the way do u have one on wild nothing ? :)
Not yet ;)
this is really really good content. thank you man and keep up what you're doing
i saw your 3 tutorial video and very love it, please moreeee lil mustach fella, saludos desde Chile!
This video is amazing dude! Great work and really enjoy learning about this. Also just so you know Mac made the demo and instrumentals to Ode to viceroy long before he knew it was about cigarettes, but I wonder if he could still have subconsciously thought of that.
I really like this style of video. You should do an artist study on MGMT.
Hey, please continue this series. Really love it! I hope you can consider deconstructing other genre as well, like Lifehouse (great melodies like From Where You are, Between The Raindrops), Pearl Jam (Black, Evenflow), Nirvana (any song). Thanks!
nice video
Thanks!
Go Offf!
You should break down Crumb! They have some very cool harmonizing going on I love them!
You should do the band Her’s next
i've played guitar for almost 6 years now and still don't understand any of this music theory LOL
My Bloody Valentine have some really interesting chord progressions. "Only Tomorrow" being a good example. Would be great to see you analyse some of their stuff. keep up the good work.
Wow, such a great band. Can't believe I didn't think of that myself!
@@tonton_bkg Nice! Glad to hear you're a fan :)
Amazing bro thank you again your stuff is super thank you for posting the guitar chords in it too I’m your fan now man
Brilliant! Glad those diagrams aren't going to waste :)
Dude you're a beast. Very cool video
Please look into the band Crumb, their progressions really impress me. Songs like m.r. and nina have put a spell on me.
Haven't heard much of theirs but what I have so far sounded killer!
@@tonton_bkg Yes! :D
More Chords lesson clip please!
great video, good vibes just subscribed! keep up the good work
Keep coming back to this, such great information. Can’t thank you enough for this ❤️ plz keep them coming!
Great channel! Would love to see Jazzystics & Apollinare Rossi - Riders on the Storm analyzed... The take on underlying chord structures is tasty! Keep up the amazing content:-)
Amazing video
Awesome video man
I really enjoyed this
Brilliant !
Aww thanks :)
Right on mate - great video
your visuals are super easy to understand. Thankyou man, this video's great.
another thing that I appreciate is that when I watch other people explain chords they seem to show off and add like 6 notes above and below the chord they're talking about, for me that just confuses the heck out of me. I'm glad you kept the /only/ notes in reference here
Wow, you’re awesome man! Please make more like this! Any advice on the band “Her’s” would be huge! They’re so amazing and more complex on guitar. The melodies they have within their chords drive me crazy. I keep trying to write riffs like that and I can’t figure it out! Keep up the great work!
Never heard of them but I’ll check them out!
Sorry bro
@@tonton_bkg did you ever get a chance to check them out? Still waiting on the her’s theory! 😂
love your videos :)
Great video! I’d love to see more like this. Love analysis of this kind!
Great and clear explanation. Subscribed!
Analyze Radiohead next!
this was an awesome analysis! gonna be revisiting and trying out some of these concepts. would you consider doing something like this on tom misch, toro y moi or vulfpeck?
Listen to your guitar solos and now watch you give this kind of lessons, you have a great talent 🤠
As a music teacher myself, excellent video! I wish you had made separate videos (or at least deeper dives) for each song!
Make sure to mention that fully-diminished 7th chords have a different root depending on the bass note and how the chord is spelled enharmonically! Like you said, context is the most important thing 🥳
Great content, sir
great video!!
Hope you're still planning to make more videos like this! Would love one on War on Drugs, they are so good at building amazing and interesting songs from relatively simple ideas.
Thank you!
