  • 2024 Summer has been brutally hot. Las Vegas set a record of 120F or 48.89C and also set a record for having temperatures over 115F over a period of several consecutive days. Even desert plants, including cacti are suffering under this prolonged heat wave. Here is a quick look at how plants are doing in my backyard and the measures that I am taking to help them get through this scorching dry summer.

I mist myself while I water outside. But I can't last longer than 10 minutes, then I have to cool myself down indoors again. It never got this hot in the Philippines! 🥵 Oh well, maybe 2 more months of this and then Fall weather starts.

Here in Phoenix is just as bad as Vegas. The nights are brutal with not going below 90º. My cactus can’t breathe. I go out at sunset and mist everything❤ I am very careful about actually trying to water because I have lost several to rot. I wish this would end soon. No rain at all this summer either. Ugh!

My Texas nipple cactus has had two fruits so this summer ,usually don’t see any till fall . They are loving the weekly watering and the sun and heat. 😎

I do something similar in new River Arizona north of Phoenix. I water my cactus during this heat, mostly on the body to cool them off, but I do let a little bit go down around the base. Mine are all in the ground outside, not in pots. I have found that you will lose more by not watering them, then you will lose from watering them. It gets hot here, a little hotter than Vegas. I have found that if I start my young cactus in the yard and direct sunlight in January, by the summer, they will be acclimated and have enough Farina to make it through the summer. I do block the evening sun with rocks or trees.
I grow on 1 acre, it's fenced in so the wildlife is at a minimum, but I have a lot of rabbit problems.
I grow nopales mostly to feed to the rabbits. Anytime I plan something new I throw the pads on the ground for the rabbits to eat and they will go after the nopales first. I have a 300 foot property line with them planted 1 foot. They are going to be living wall.

Seems now and then we have to fight mother nature to keep what we love. You remind me of myself during the winter here. Working hard to keep the collection!!! Our summer here has been much better than the last two years we are getting rain like we should. And not the excessive heat. But with my new greenhouse roof panels I have experienced a bit of sunburn on some plants that weren't used to the bright sun cause they are much clearer now. But this will help me in the winter on sunny days by allowing more sunshine and warmth. I hope this breaks soon for you and your plants!!! No fun living in hell 🥵 Good luck Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a cooler day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌻🌷🌴💐🌱🍀🌹🌿🌸🌳🪴🌾😃👍

I hope that's an iced coffee! LOL
We're abnormally hot down here in Tucson too, but usually 5-10 degrees lower than you up there in Vegas right now.
The other difference is we're in the middle of a pretty intense monsoon season where humidity stays quite high (for the desert) and we have been getting fairly frequent really strong rains with powerful microburst winds.
Rains have provided enough water for everything except those sheltered under my patio.
My columnar cactus have always been in direct full exposure sun; they are OK water wise but some are showing signs of stress from the sustained higher than normal heat (I think).
Have had sporadic flowers (2-this morning) but many other flower buds have withered and died before opening.
For my amazing insight into the blatantly obvious, Saguaro, Ocotillo, and prickly pear (native) are thriving right now!
Thanks for posting; I always learn something new from your videos.
Hang in there with all of this heat...
    Zk

Hi Ana😌🙌It's unbelievably hot there in Nevada😱🔥☀️It would be incredibly difficult to cool down your yard. It does work a bit to put your cacti pots inside a slightly bigger teracotta pot. That reduces the heat stress on the roots. I hope for some lower temperatures for you Ana🙏

I wonder this all the time about you growers in much hotter climates. Where i live, summers typically average 85ish. Its facing 91 tomorrow, and 86 right now, yet i still find myself having to hide certain plants in the shade!!! I literally just put some of my plants in the shade because they looked a little discolored, like a gymno and ferrocactus, both of which seem to me to be dormant.

I have a handful that get direct sun all day, sun up to sun down. I have many others that get morning sun until around 3 pm when the sun goes behind my house. Then I have some that get morning sun until around 2pm, then its shade time. So any amount of sun stress puzzles me. _It really is about finding a way to keep them all happy, and the work never stops!!!!_
