You should notice that Ward was using the thick ends of his sticks on the drums for extra force. Like the jazz drummers that influenced him, he got the "swing". He could be both brutal and subtle and always played for the song. My favorite drummer
I heard a breakdown of a solo Ozzy track and he had a killer rhythm section - I want to say they were from Uriah Heap? - so clearly he knew what he had here and needed it to be that good going forward. Brilliant musicians.
What an amazing film clip , I haven’t seen this before , I grew up with Sabbath and they never fail to amaze me , I seen them in concert at Melbourne’s festival hall back in the day about 1974 ? I remember it like yesterday and it had a huge impact on me, Forever a Sabbath fan , Thanks guys , Great reaction 😊
November 1974, Festival Hall. I was there as well, just a wee lad of 12 accompanied by my much more mature older brother (age 15). Somehow he convinced our parents to let us both go, but I think dad picked us up afterwards. That was the very first “real” concert I ever went to, and I was very excited, I can tell you!
@lb d5300 😁 That caused a great flashback... the old bus shelter was a THE venue back in the day. You're so lucky,... wish l had gone to that Sabbath concert. Coincidentally the first real concert I attended was at Festival Hall as a 12yo. The folks would't let me travel in from the country alone, so luckily the neighbour's older girls took me... Deep Purple, Free, Manfred Mann, and a great Aussie band, Pirana, on the bill. I think the concert ticket price was around 10 or 12 dollars... imagine the cost for that line up today! 🙄 Purple had a bad night... Jon Lord's keyboard blew out and they had to wheel Manfred's unit back on stage. Ian Gillan went off stage several times with a throat problem... and for that reason Purple organised a free return concert for ticket holders a couple of nights later. Sabbath should have done the same after their horrid Kooyong concert, but they simply treated fans with contempt. Hope they at least fired their sound guy.
Your reaction was very similar to my reaction, when I first saw the video about 10 years ago. My only mistake was watching this late at night, and not being able to sleep for three hours....because I was so pumped up. LOL.
This is not my jam ... but having said that, it's a testament to the band member's musicianship to be able to play THAT hard and keep it all together from the first note 'til the last. Tight indeed!
Ward should have been arrested for percussion instrument abuse. My only issue with the vid was the lack of attention to Geezer Butler on the bass. He was all over it. I saw them three times. Sabbath over LZ all day.
War Pigs is one of my all time favourite tracks, and is on all my playlists.. love the SG sound and drummer hit the skins like it was a red headed stepchild..Amazing!!!

Saw Black Sabbath in Sydney 1972. Supported by local Aussie band, Buffalo (they did a cover of "Paranoid"). Bass guitarist, Pete Wells, went on to form Rose Tattoo. What a great night out!
Wow! That was a time warp: back to the days when this song was almost an anthem for my age group( males) in Australia where conscription to the Vietnam war was a few years away. Luckily conscription was cancelled a year before I got there. And War Pigs was the right title...
I sometimes forget to breathe when I watch this video. Bill & Geezer are the real stars of this (even if you only see Geezer twice). Tony Iommi has a decent run, and Ozzy as The Showman is brilliant, but when BW goes savage, it shows what a powerhouse he was. He beats on that kit like it owes him money.
My beloved Uncle Richard got me a copy of Paranoid for my 13th birthday in 1975, so several years after its release, but I was still so so stoked!! To give you an idea of the timeframe and my age, another well-meaning relative got me a copy of a Bay City Rollers album, which I promptly took to school and swapped for a Slade album (Slayed).

Absolutely classic track from the dawn of heavy metal music! Speaking of Ward and Butler, I remember seeing them interviewed on a series about rock music on some nondescript cable channel a decade or more back; they both credited listening to jazz music via their family/their parents' jazz records as youngsters, for the playing styles that they developed.
Bill Ward beats those drums like they owe him money! Does he need new skins after every show? What a beast! It's funny that you say he doesn't sound that way on the album. I've heard it said that the only reason he's not thought of in the same vein as John Bonham is the production from the two bands. Bonham's drums were much better produced in the studio than Ward's. I've personally always liked Ward better, including the studio stuff, but that's obviously subjective. I saw Sabbath back in the mid-70's, but never got to see Zeppelin, unfortunately (though I saw both Plant and Page on solo tours), so Zeppelin is an obvious choice for me, if I could go back in time to see either group in their prime.
Bill Ward here was like Keith Moon except more focused. Interesting that Tony is actually quite constrained in his movements. It’s almost like The Who but Geezer is the flamboyant player and Tony is the reserved one. Epic performance. Great pick!
In '73 l saw 2 bands @ Kooyong in Melbourne throughout the year... Black Sabbath, and the Rolling Stones. Saw Led Zeppelin there the year prior in '72. The Stones were a solid unit, and Zeppelin just blew us all away with one of the best live performances l can remember. Sabbath were one of my favourite bands of the era... but their performance at Kooyong was nothing short of absolute shite. Some people walked out demanding a refund. It was either local band Madder Lake or Leo DeCastro & Friends who came on before Sabbath, and we all agreed after the show that Sabbath should have been their support act. The one saving grace for Sabbath was Ozzy's performance. He busted a gut. Iommi played off key and Butler's amps were shit... he ended up thumping the guitar body just for fill in noise, as he could not play loud enough to be heard. It was around that period that Sabbath were booed off stage in South Australia, and iirc, Ozzy was pretty pissed and threatened to never return to Australia. Anyhow, great video reaction to a hot performance, guys. Also good to see Sabbath live at the top of their game. Cheers 👍

Also, I can't believe they had to change the name of the song because it was too Satanic. The band's name was Black Sabbath, for Lucifer's sake! And what did their record company expect from a song that references witches and their black masses in the opening line of the lyrics? Weird. On a side note, George, I hope you wished Peter Gabriel a happy 73rd birthday for yesterday (well, it was yesterday here, but might still be today in the US).
