Steve's older brother, Muff Winwood, who was in the Spencer Davis Group with Steve, tells a story about a time when Muff was trying to work something out on the guitar. Well, here comes his younger brother (5 years younger and I think Muff said Steve was 8 when this happened) takes the guitar from Muff, plays the song Muff was trying to figure out and says "why don't you play it like this?!"
Showoff! The list of instruments that Steve can play is amazing, and I can't even begin on his voice, I'd be here all night if I did.

Thank you sooo much! Steve Winwood, yes please, all day. One of my all time favourite artists, every stage of his career he found a different way to bring the magic. Seriously underrated, not by those who know, 'coz if you know, you know, just not enough people know, damn it! Was lucky enough to see him live in '91 and again in 2011 (touring with Steely Dan) in Melbourne. What an absolute legend. ❤

Steve is an incredibly talented musician, who seems to be able to totally master any instrument. His guitar playing tends to get overlooked, with people tending to concentrate on his voice and keyboard playing (both of which are incredible), but in reality he is just as good on guitar!

This is from the Jim Capaldi (drummer for Traffic and solo artist- see 1981 huge pop hit 'That's Love') tribute concert, I believe.
Steve does it all. He's you're " one stop shop" musician.
To say SW is amazing is such an understatement. He is a musical genius.
Check out the Spencer Davis Group version of "Georgia On My Mind". He's maybe 17 and his chops as a musician/singer/band leader are undeniable.
    I'm a little obsessed.

Self,-correcting, Jim Capaldi's "That's Love'" came out in 1983. And Stevie W is playing keys on that track.

Actually, on the record, it's Dave Mason playing the solo on Mr. Fantasy. However, when I first saw Traffic live in New York in 1968 sans Mason, Steve Winwood played the solo on his mint green Gibson Firebird, it was amazing. Winwood has always been one of my top favorite rock musicians and vocalists.

Steve Winwood was hailed a genius from the start.
Spencer Davis spotted 14 yo Steve and his older brother Muff doing a gig in a pub..... around 1963.
Muff played bass, young Steve sung and played the organ.
    Davis was a Welsh guitarist.
They found a drummer and formed a group under a forgotten name.
Everyone except Davis hated the business side and negotiation etc so they voted to change the group name to The Spencer Davis Group....... a great move.
Now no con men and suits had cause to bother the other 3 .
They had their first No 1 in England 1965, Stevie about 16 yo and the lead singer.
A string of hits followed thru 1966 and 67.
In Australia, they were popular right from first airplay..... and even a film clip on TV in 1967 or earlier.
In the film clips Steve looked a lot older than 15 / 16 ...... he never smiled and looked like a couple of local stand over men....... every one was surprised to find out he was still at school. lol
In the first clip, Keep on Running I think, he only sung.
In later clips he was on guitar and Davis, the guitarist on organ. lol
They were a great rock group back then and I still remember 2 of their songs from the film clips...... Keep on Running and Gimme Gimme Some Lovin...... and then we heard I’M. A. MAN.
As good a rock song as has ever been recorded, as good as Chicago’s cover and better than any of the original blues standard versions from Mannish Boy to the first known version returned I’m a Man.

I was lucky to see him in Toronto when he toured as the opening act for Tom Petty. Not only was he a musical savant I am even more impressed that came on the music scene at the age of 14 inthe late 60's and survived all the pitfalls that accompanied that era. He plays music so effortlessly!!!!! He is blessed with a god given talent that can takee his audience on a musical journey. One of a kind.

I have an embarrassing confession to make. I hardly know Steve Winwood. There; I said it.
Do I know his name? Yes. Did I assume he was good? Yes. Did I ever bother to listen to him? Hardly. From my experience, Winwood was around in the early to mid-Eighties and I had other things on my mind at that time. Music wasn't really one of them, unless she looked like Blondie, or that girl from Transvision Vamp.
However, fast forward 40 plus years and I now know that I was (maybe I still am) a d**k head. That was a magnificent performance, and it has me on the hunt for more Winwood musical tutorials. Alex, you say he plays Hammond as well? If he plays that with the proficiency he shows on guitar, then I reckon that is more impressive than these guitar solos. Gold.
Chris, this is why George and Alex have you feeding them musical inspiration, because you have amazing knowledge and taste. Well done.

If you guys want to experience another moment where a group of musicians capture lightning in a bottle, have a look at Joe Satriani and Grace Potter doing their version of Neil Young's Cortez the Killer. While Satriani and Potter are both superb, you will be spellbound by the trumpeter Willy Waldman. It's one of those numbers you will keep revisiting. It's simply that good.

First time I saw Stevie play guitar was for The Who at the Universal Amphitheater where they performed Tommy in full and then did a The Who set.
Stevie played the part of The Hawker, who was originally played by Eric Clapton in the movie version of Tommy. Given the Crossroads performance here and the past connection with Clapton, I reckon Eric would’ve been the one who recommended Stevie to Pete Townshend. Stevie did an awesome job with the Hawker’s song (although I wasn’t 100% a fan of the guitar tone he got on the show, but I suspect they compromised slightly on amping him up due to logistics). He played well on the show, but he’s even better here at Crossroads.
    Great choice!!

About stellar live performances: something completely different, but did you ever heard the singersongwriter LP? He/she did a live rendition of the famous Queen Bees 'Halo'. It knocked me out. • @brianparsa7794

Steve Winwood, sadly, is hardly thought of by music fans younger than, say, 50 years old . . . maybe I should up that to 60 years old, since the 50-year-old's probably only know his 1980's pop hits, lol. One of those fabulously multi-talented musicians, like Stevie Wonder and Prince are/were too. Odd thing about Traffic was that they disbanded when Winwood joined Clapton and Ginger Baker and somebody else on bass to form Blind Faith, but Blind Faith was over and done with in something like 9 months to a year. Winwood then started recording a solo album, with the help of some of his mates from Traffic, and they all decided, "the hell with it, let's put Traffic back together!"
