As an Irishman, I was happy that the show explored the reasons James McClean refuses to wear the poppy, which he has always eloquently explained, even in the face of vile abuse.
I think the poppy used to be a symbol for those who died fighting both World Wars. James has said if that was still the case, he'd wear one every day. But somewhere along the line, it got expanded to represent all of Britain's war dead, which would include conflicts like Iraq and Northern Ireland where they committed atrocities. The whole thing has been turned into a circus, rather than the solemn remembrance it was before and always should be.

    Few tidbits:
    - The game Parky referenced was when Wrexham lost AT Accrington Stanley last fall and they celebrated like crazy
    - A Derby is different from a rivalry because it’s based on proximity AND history. So less broncos raiders, more Yankees Red Sox, Michigan/Ohio state, Texas/Oklahoma in college football, Celtics/ 76ers, etc.
    - You guys were pretty spot on about McClean, but for a bit of context, he doesn’t hate England or the English, but he doesn’t support what their government did. Like many he likes the country while disagreeing with its past politics. Only thing i disagreed with was the Antonio brown comparison, as he’s not like Antonio brown because Antonio’s headaches were criminal and unecessary violent. He was a locker room cancer on and off the field. James McClean is LOVED by wrexham. Every player on the team loves him and have called him a natural leader and tenacious player, and there multiple calls for him to be named a captain. Even the fans love him as you saw, especially as wrexham is a working class welsh town which has also been overlooked by the British govt, so many relate to him and his views. (Even Paul Mullin relates to him, as you might remember last season when there was an episode on how Mullin got flack for writing an anti-govt message on his cleats.) There’s even a chant about how the fans love that McClean hates the monarchy, which is a pretty common sentiment in Wrexham. Finally, yes Ireland has a league but it’s woefully bad. It’s unfair when people say McClean should play other leagues just because he disagrees politically with the British govt’s past actions, even as he has no hate for the English people themselves. Disagreeing politically shouldn’t bar him from playing at the highest level as you guys said

@@TouchyReactions no i think you guys were spot on, i loved how you said free speech is for EVERYONE and people shouldn’t be forced to fall in line for something they feel strongly about. I agree with that 100%. I was just providing some on the ground context surrounding McClean that gets lost because he’s such a polarizing figure

In fact, there are very big differences between derbies and rivalry matches. The best example of a rivalry match is Rams vs Chargers. The rivalry is there because of the fact that both teams play in the same city. But just a few years ago neither of them were in LA. Thinking back even more years, the Rams were in LA. And it is precisely these "relocations" that make it almost impossible for American fans to develop the same loyalty that exists in football. Or does the average Raiders fan remain a fan of the team (forever) since the team moved to Las Vegas? First of all, you have to understand that such a relocation would be unthinkable in club football. An example of a derby would be the so-called "Old Firm", the Scottish derby between Celtic Glasgow and Glasgow Rangers. This was held for the first time in 1891 and has been held over 440 times since then. And here is the component that makes it more than just a rivalry: the Rangers stand for the Protestant part of Glasgow and for unionism - i.e. Scotland remaining part of Great Britain. Celtic, on the other hand, was founded by Catholic Irish immigrants who campaigned for Scottish independence (and to a certain extent also for the reunification of Ireland with Northern Ireland). Of course, this creates great tension in every game. So you can see that a derby is about much more than just deciding who is better in the league or in the city. In Belgrade (Serbia), for example, it is more important to win the derby - Red Star vs Partizan Belgrade - than to win the championship title. Likewise in Vienna (Rapid vs Austria Vienna), in the German Ruhr area (Schalke vs Dortmund, earlier on), in Milan (Inter vs AC Milan) and so on. Anyway, thanks for another great reaction video. 👍👍👍

Gee i wonder if there was a sport in America that didn’t have relocations, that had rivalries as old as English football ones, that had traditions as fierce and historic as yours, where the teams are rooted in the communities and are a lifeblood of the fans, where Darby matches have real hate between the teams and nothing manufactured. I wonder if a sport like that exists in the US… oh wait. It does. College football. Or Yankees Red Sox. Cowboys eagles. Coyotes blue jackets. Sounders timbers. Celtics 76ers.

@@Yash-hr3uv I agree with you about college football (basketball, etc.). But all teams at the professional level are, strictly speaking, just franchises. To give an extreme example: Yankees / Red Sox. The tradition and enthusiasm is there (okay, not like in Europe - I got in trouble at my first baseball game in New York because I obviously cheered for the Yankees too loudly), but: despite all the tradition, there is the possibility that one day the Sox, or the Yankees, or any other professional team will simply be moved somewhere else. Colts - I think '84, Rams, Chargers, Raiders several times, Hartford, Dodgers, to name a few.

Mansfield Town was at the top of the league heading into the game with Wrexham. Stockport was second but then leapfrogged Mansfield by winning their game that same weekend. Wrexham stayed in 3rd place because of a worse goal differential.

American football = broken/stops between plays, meaning the cheering broken/stops..
Football or Soccer for you guys, has less fractured game play, giving more opportunity or continuity for the fans to cheer and bang the drums!

Plus let's not forget the TV timeouts in an American football game where they stop the game so the networks can play their commercials. Football has no commercial breaks also. I imagine that just kills atmosphere, enforced 3 minute breaks in the gameplay at random intervals.
