  • The Fly (1986)
The Fly is a 1986 American science fiction horror film directed and co-written by David Cronenberg. Produced by Brooksfilms and distributed by 20th Century Fox, the film stars Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, and John Getz. Loosely based on George Langelaan's 1957 short story of the same name and the 1958 film of the same name, The Fly tells of an eccentric scientist who, after one of his experiments goes wrong, slowly turns into a fly-hybrid creature. The score was composed by Howard Shore and the make-up effects were created by Chris Walas, along with makeup artist Stephan Dupuis.

The Fly might be the best body horror movie of all time

    • @odiumgeneris729

Not even close. But there's an argument to be made for the best remake of all time. This and "The Thing". The disarming thing about the fly is that, just like this reactor, you know what's going to happen after they're finished setting up the plot. What you _don't_ know is that the movie isn't going to be about his transformation. It's going to be about him and ronnie. There are very few character-driven genre movies. The Empire Strikes Back was the character piece that drives that franchise to this day. And people weren't tuning in to the Marvel movies just to see another explosion. They wanted to see what was going to happen to those characters. This where the fly shines, but it doesn't make it the best horror movie of all time.

@@ZodsSnappedNeck Except you're not taking into account the marketing and studio cut. That 14m figure is just a production budget. Typical films need to make at least 2.5-3x their production budget to be successful in order to pay the studio and marketing costs. So yes, it was definitely successful but nothing like a lot of other horror films of the day that had similar gross numbers but at a fraction of the invested budget.

Yes, it's a horror film. But it's also a love story. Love stories usually have a sad ending. Seth wasn't Seth at the end, but the remaining humanity of his wanted it to end. So sad, but also such an amazing story. The sequel is good. But more a traditional monster movie, not as much pathos that this one has, but Eric Stoltz delivers a great performance. Give it a look!

David Cronenberg it's not your typical horror director. His movies are not jump scare kind of things... The horror in his movies gets under your skin It stick with you. His movies tend to live where psychological horror meets body horror He's also acted in a few things... He has this smart / cold demeanor that lends itself to horror. He's a villain in Clive Barker's Night Breed (1900)... The director's cut of that is worth seeking out. Chris Walas who did the practical effects on Gremlins did the effects here and I think they won an Academy Award.

This is actually a remake of The Fly (1958). Back in the day remakes had to bring something different (they didn't rely on cheap nostalgia to draw an audience). This is very different from the original film, while still following most of the same plot points. I'd love to see someone react to the original one day... but I know that's unlikely to ever happen. 😒

  • @SBrundle

David Cronenberg specifically constructed this film as a metaphor for old age and terminal illness. If you strip out the sci-fi elements, it’s the story of two people who meet and fall in love, with one of them (metaphorically) getting old/suffering from a degenerative terminal illness. He gets worse and worse, and ends up so mentally and physically crippled that he asks his lover for assisted suicide.
That’s what the movie’s actually about. How we we deal with the relentless inevitability of old age and death, and the effect it has on our relationships and loved ones. The script is peppered with references to aging, and Brundle loses hair/nails/teeth and walks on canes, at one point.
The emotional subtext of the film is absolutely real, and absolutely devastating, which is why it remains so powerful and so sad. We all watch ourselves slowly fall apart in the bathroom mirror, just as Brundle does. The movie’s sci-fi candy-coating just takes it a few steps beyond reality to make the story easier to digest.
Cronenberg’s best film, Goldblum’s best film, and the best body horror film ever made, because the effects serve a thematic purpose, rather than being nasty just to be nasty. And it’s also better than THE THING (which I also love, mind you), because it’s more personal, more intimate, and hits closer to home.

I also felt it was a metaphor for the AIDS crisis

    • @SBrundle
      @SBrundle 8 месяцев назад

Critics at the time read it as an AIDS metaphor (as they also did with THE THING) but that was never the intent. Cronenberg has said it’s specifically about aging, and when you go in know that, all the pieces begin clicking together.
Brundle is reborn when he’s teleported, has his teenage years (weird hair, acne, junk food, sex drive), then begins to deteriorate, slowly being stripped of his mind and body until he just wants to die.
      As do we all.

The 1958 original starred Al (aka David) Hedison, Patricia Owens and VINCENT PRICE. It had two sequels. In the original films, when two organisms go through together, they remain separate organisms but exchange some components. Different kind of body horror.
This remake had one sequel, starring Eric Stoltz and Daphne Zuniga. The ending left the door open for a part 3, but none was made.

You don't seem to like movies that leave you feeling anything but happy. You want every movie to have a hero. Sometimes life is tragic. Sometimes people don't make it out whole and complete if they make it at all. Movies show all aspects of life and deal with all emotions. If a movie gets you in your feels it's usually a good movie. If you walk away feeling like you've been punched in the gut, then it did its job. Everything ain't going to make you happy and that's ok. Sometimes there's growth from pain.

Welcome to the world of David Cronenberg . A suggestion of another Cronenberg movie is Videodrome , another old one from the early eighties starring James Woods

Hi Cami!😊 Oh boy, you are watching The Fly!😱 This version is a bit more gruesome than the original 50s version. Chris Walas did the creature effects. He would also return for the sequel. She really had no one else she could tell except Stathis Borans about Seth. It was a sad story, so crying is natural.😢 "The Thing" does have a very strong fan base! Gruesome body horror probably is not your thing. Great reactions to this disturbing horror film, Cami!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

I like both the 1958 and 1986 versions for different reasons, but I won't elaborate on them. I suggest, Cami, that you give the 1958 version a chance; you'd probably wind up preferring it over the 1986 version. The original was structured more as a mystery, in the tradition of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." It is told in flashback: an apparent murder is committed at the start of the film and the accused must relate the story of how the victim met his death. It's a science fiction murder mystery and it is very elegant. You'd like it!
