I was a teenager in the 1980s. The "you can't spend time alone in a car with a girl, but hanging out with a peculiar local scientist who is 40 years older than you is fine" social rules are accurate. And in case you were wondering, yes it was a great time to be a teenager.

The movie theater marquees change too. Real film Cattle Queen of Montana w/ Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan (foreshadows the Reagan as President joke) becomes Orgy American Style, a real soft core movie with cult favorite Rene Bond and George "Buck" Flower (the latter plays Red the Bum in BTTF). Another theater has actual film The Atomic Kid w/ Mickey Rooney and Robert Strauss (the two actors are predecessors to Fox and Lloyd) later becoming The Assembly of Christ (Church). Both theaters have apparently fallen on hard times.

Definitely do all three. Back to the Future is one of the strongest trilogies ever put to film. The Sports poster was a Huey Lewis and the News album entitled Sports. Huey Lewis did several of the songs, including Power of Love, Back in Time. Huey did a cameo as the teacher who shot Marty down in the audition for "being too damn loud" while playing a Huey Lewis tune. There are many background easter egg time change nuggets in all three films, as well as the more obvious changes. Half the fun is trying to find or notice them.

The idea of the movie came about when writer Bob Gale found his dad's old high school yearbook and learned he'd been class president. He wondered if he'd be friends with his parents if they went to school at the same time, which led to the idea for a story where a kid goes to school with his parents.
There was a couple of hiccups with casting. Michael J. Fox was always their first choice to play Marty, but he was busy with a popular TV show at the time called "Family Ties", so they cast another actor named Eric Stoltz. After a few weeks, it became clear that Stoltz wasn't working out. He was giving a dramatic performance, but this was supposed to be a comedy. Gale and Zemeckis made the difficult choice to let Stoltz go and pleaded with the "Family Ties" showrunner to let Michael do the movie. The compromise was that he would work on the show by day and the movie by night. That's why so much of it takes place at night or indoors.
The Marty casting debacle affected some other roles in the film. An actor named JJ Cohen was supposed to play Biff, but he wasn't physically imposing next to Stoltz (who is quite a bit taller than Michael) so they cast Tom Wilson as Biff and JJ ended up playing one of Biff's gang. Also Melora Hardin (who later played Jan on "The Office") was cast as Jennifer, but when Michael replaced Stoltz, they decided she was too tall next to him, and she was replaced with Claudia Wells.
If you're wondering about the "permit" that Dox showed the cop, there was a deleted scene where the "permit" is Doc slipping the cop a few bucks.

There are a cameo in this one, Huey Lewis and the News provided the song "Back in Time" to the Back to the Future soundtrack, which played during the film's credits. At the beginning of Back to the Future, Huey Lewis took on a nerdy persona in an uncredited cameo as a judge for Battle of the Bands. Marty's band "The Pinheads" played a hard rock cover of Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love," but were ironically rejected by Huey Lewis' character. And this was the first film role for Billy Zane While he played a bigger role than a short cameo, Billy Zane made his acting debut as Biff's friend Match in this movie and second. Keep up the good work.

Nice watch, Nick. So enjoyable to see someone who's so invested. When Marty gets hit by a car, Grandpa says, "Another kid jumped in front of the car." I'm convinced that Loraine is a siren, and she's luring guys onto the rocks hoping to land,"the one." Apparently, Biff isn't on her list of targets, and he's pissed. Who kisses their brother like that? It's really convenient that Biff has a glass jaw and can't take a punch. Huey Lewis, the guy who told Marty he was too loud, wrote the song The pinheads were playing. It's not the only one. His band's next album was "Sports." You'll need to watch BTTF multiple times to see what changes Marty's road trip caused. It is an easy repeater. Welcome to the franchise.

During the rest of that scene you can see Marty in the background (while Doc goes through his future self's belongings) improvising a connection to the TV by cutting and splicing wires.

POPCORN ROULETTE: You're very likable. Good reaction video. Nonetheless, there are things young reactors like you can't appreciate, through no fault of your own, because of your youth. For example: When this movie was made, a terrific rock singer, Huey Lewis was near the peak of his popularity. The song being played in the first scene when Marty was being pulled on a skateboard was a recording of a big Huey Lewis hit. When Marty started playing for a school audition, it was a Huey Lewis song. And then the nerd in the glasses in the high school gym that told Marty, "You're just too loud," was actually Huey Lewis in real life, which made it hilarious for us 1985 audiences. Another example: As an older teenager, I worked in a gas station in the late 60s. We'd literally run out when anyone pulled in for gas, pump their gas, wash their windshield, and check their oil - all when gas was around 30-35 cents a gallon - which makes the scene when Marty goes back to 1955, where multiple men run out to pump gas, amusing compared to what became self-service gas pumping in the 70s & 80s when the price of gasoline tripled in just a few years.

You mean 50's schools were so lenient. (21:18) 😉 And it wasn't Marty's intention to go back in time. He was just trying to get away from the guys who deleted Doc. He didn't realize the time travel circuits were on.

Hey Nicolette! Shout out from the US Marine Corps! Now you can officially say that you made a US Marine cry! I absolutely loved your reaction and part 2 and 3 of this trilogy is just as amazing as the first one! Maybe just one suggestion . At the end of the movie maybe talk about it for like 8 minutes. I know myself and a lot of people really love that! This is the best trilogy of all time besides for Star Wars 4, 5, and 6. I can't wait to see your reaction to part 2! And your cute as a button, respectfully!

Far more time has passed since this movie debuted until today 1985 to 2023 or 38 years than the 30 years Marty went back in time. The movie has become a time capsule for the 80's. It hit like a thunderbolt when it premiered it was a sensation and the Delorean car became immortal.

    1. Cranky principal Strickland/James Tolkan also played the ship's squadron leader in "Top Gun".
    2. The teacher that tells Marty, "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of rock and roll)
    3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie.
    4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose.
    5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 🤣
    6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous.
    7. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta.
    8. You may notice "Twin Pines Mall" becomes "Lone Pine Mall" after Marty takes one out when he goes ack to 1955.

In terms of the origin story. I read that when Marty was around 14 everyone was talking about a " mad scientist " who made these crazy inventions but parents told their kids to stay away from him but Marty actually snuck into his lab and doc caught him and was surprised that Marty was actually interested in his work so from then on he was just always around and their friendship blossomed from there

The school talent judge was Huey Lewis (and the News), the voice behind the song The Power of Love. They Libya s weren't pleased with being named as the bad guys by this movie. 50's schools, not 80's. Officially skateboard invention was 1958, but there were examples before that. The Sports poster was an album cover of the Huey Lewis and the News album names "Sports."

The Sports poster is actually a Huey Lewis and the News band poster from 1983. Evidently that album is the "Sports" column in the Huey Lewis and the "News[paper]" (and the band were pictured at a sports bar). However it's significant in that the group wrote and performed both Back in Time and The Power of Love for the Back to the Future soundtrack. It's even partially played at Marty's band audition for the high school dance.

Marvin Berry somehow has a guitar from the future. The guitar he lends to Marty is a Gibson ES-345, a model which wasn’t produced until 1958. It’s very appropriate, though, since Marty chooses to play a song which is also from 1958. 😄

4:29 The joke is that's Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News, the band that composed the song Marty is playing. So he's saying his own song is too loud.
10:41 Not unless it's predistined. Like if you bump into your grandpa and push him in your grandmas direction, you were always meant to be there and that means you were never in danger of changing anything. But in the movie it's clear Marty's time travel is the first one cause of all the things that change in 1985.

You mentioned the butterfly effect. BTTF does address is in someways, especially in part 2 and 3 but there are minor effects in this one like Twin Pine becoming Lone Pine, how much better Marty's family is now, and a few other ones. Part 2 and 3 are definitely worth watching to round out the full story.
