In this #shorts video, I am discussing hair typing in a simplified manner, with photos as visual examples of each type. This is a representation of curl types, but not of whether or not the hair is fine or coarse, low, medium, or high porosity, or protein/moisture balanced. Hair typing helps you to more easily understand the styling capabilities of certain curl/coil patterns, NOT whether or not a product will work well on your hair. Porosity is a much larger indicator of the products that will work on your hair, as it impacts product absorption into the strands.

Thanks for watching fam!!

I have 3a-3b type hair and some areas 3c. I dont know what product to use to get my natural curls to pop.
THX, THX, THX...you slay with the info for OUR "colorful" hair. Big up yourself. And thank you for helping me see the tight(curls).💋❤️💯
I am forever grateful for you Linwood and everything you do! I have never had the opportunity to meet anyone with even the smallest amount of hair and care knowledge that you have. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge, helping everyone and for your true kindness that shines from within.

Forgot to add, thanks to you, I just found out that I’m an oddity lol. The top 3/4 of my hair, including the crown, is a 1. But the bottom 1/4, to where my hair stops at my neck is a 1C. Cheers🍻 to being beautifully unique! Thanks again 😊🥰
Hi Linwood. I recently found your shorts and I very much trust all of the advice you have given. This video of a natural sister getting dragged an IG page with a large following BROKE MY HEART. She literally had me in tears recounting the events.
Can you please make a response or reaction video? I believe her name is Myoma or something similar if you don’t trust the link below.

I am tired of the representation that 4c hair is always short. However yes viola slays
Good point. We need to see women with 4b and 4c with long hair. They definitely do exist
Right? You could barely even see the curl type smh

I love that you describe 4c coils like a pen spring. That is exactly how I describe it too. And then I had younger people look at me strange, because they had never seen a pen spring...
Lol I felt the same way when I was teaching my students palm rolling for locs. I kept telling them to palmroll clockwise. They didn’t know which way clockwise is because they’ve never had to read an analog clock

I'm Asian (southeast asian) and I was born with Type 1 hair, until I reached puberty. Then, my hair started to expand(?). It got super frizzy. Doesn't matter how much conditioner or oil I used or how much I brush, it still frizzes. Until I saw a YT vid that suggests I might have wavy/curly hair. Had to learn about the types of hair and go through an awkward hair rehabilitation phase. Now, I have healthy hair that's 2c (depends on how well I take care of it). Why my hair went crazy after puberty? Beats me but it can happen 😐
At puberty your hormones changed, and hair is always affected by hormonal changes. Hair often changes after babies are born, during menopause, and also if there are any hormonal disorders in the body.
@@GetGlamFam oh no 😂😂😂 so that means my hair will evolve again. Thanks for that note
I'm 2c as well and my hair always looked like I'd stuck my finger in a light socket until I started using products that dont have any sulfates or parabens in them.
@@eleanademera6371 Pretty much. I find that what helped was
1) Limit hair washes to 1 or 2 times a week
2) Switch to a wide toothed comb
3) Comb my hair only during shower
4) Use a satin scarf when I sleep
5) Use a sulfate free shampoo
6) Use a silicone free conditioner
7) Use a curl cream after shower
8) Diffuse with the lowest temperature setting
My hair is 1a but why doesn't anyone ever mention 1b or 1c hair textures
I love how someone finally said 4B does not have a coil. In diagrams it has a zag and when undefined it usually just looks almost like a kinky version of type 1 hair to be honest
I agree! It's easily straightened.
Yes exactly. I've always thought 4b patterns are not a coil but zig zagg myself and 4c was the coily one
I think Vivhairtherapy may have 4b texture. I always thought of her hair as being straight but with a lot of kinkiness to it. At first I thought she didn't have a pattern but with this description I now think it's 4b.
@@naughtysims30 I totally agree!
@@naughtysims30 Yep, definitely. I have mostly 4b hair that is like that, “wavy” without a real curl pattern, when I put coiling jelly in it. When I used to do wash n’ gos, I could never get that uniform spiral coil, except for hair at the nape of my neck (where a 4a/4b mix resides) and my crown (where a 4b/4c mix resides). Needless to say, the clear differences in coil pattern was vexing. Now I have locs, lol, so no worries anymore. 😂😄
I think all hair types are BEAUTIFUL just like different cultures and languages.
I completely agree 🥰
I agree but I hate my hair lol

And yes, Viola is QUEEN MOTHA!

Yup!
I'm asian and my hair straight af, which never gets curls, and when I was little my mom would do my braids using water bc it would slip away through her hands. BTW I always dreamed of curly wavy hair as a kid but now I embraced my hair 🙃
Same , I’m Mexican with super straight hair and if I try to curl my hair it never stays curls unless I put a lot of produce . . Hair is beautiful
Eyy same. Tried curling my hair once because I was a bridesmaid, but it went back to its natural straight state half an hour into the wedding lol
Same my hair is really straight and I always adored curly hair! I got a perm recently tho and I'm super happy with it!
I always cry when I am trying some curls in my hair
I also have super straight hair, and I mean super straight. Don't curl often, but if you do go around 180º with a flat iron, creates gorgeous curls for days
My Afro is now a mix of 3c, 4a, and 4b and it feels so empowering now that I don’t even care what people say.
I’ve been drinking MSM powder in OJ each day and drinking soaked chia seeds. My 4a-4c hair has thickened and even more and become softer. My Afro is almost as big as Tabitha Browns. Can’t wait for the spring to see what she looks like. She’s a whole vibe!!
This was beautiful. Yes so many people have a mix of hair types but it's glad to see 4b shown fr because a lot of people have 4b/c mix and call it 4c.
right
I definitely have the mixed stuff... she's so bougie... like me lol
True. This is my situation and I love my hair.
It could be that most of their is 4C

I have type 1. I have ZERO body, wave, bounce, just nothing in my hair. My hair is straighter then ppl I see who have used a straightener.
I appreciate this as I've been trying to figure out my dghtrs type. She has 3A, so thanks!
My pleasure! My mom has rather straight, ultra fine hair. It’s hard for her to hold styles
My mum has poker straight hair, it holds nothing, curl it and they drop out so quick. I'm between 1 and 2 but my daughters 3a is really difficult to deal with. If I brush it the curls lose definition and it goes frizzy, dont brush it and it matts and tangles sooo quick. Lately I've been only brushing it when it's full of conditioner. I put it on for 10 minutes then brush it through and rinse. I can get 2 days without having to brush it like that. Just a little finger detangle. I saw that on some video and it's working good so far. I love her hair and I just want to keep it looking good but boy, is curly hard work!
@@littleboots9800 it definitely is more challenging than straighter textures.
Mine too. Worst type of hair ever 🤣😂
Type 1 is STRAIGHT STRAIGHT...like the bristles on a brush straight. He's right. The only people I have ever seen with this 100% straight hair are Asians (usually Japanese) and Mexicans (and other South Americans like Peruvians, Nicaraguans, etc.) Even white people don't have 100% straight hair.
I appreciate that you didn’t bring up “harder to manage” or “more brittle” when talking about type 4 hair. It might be true but it can still come off weird especially when no disadvantages were mentioned with the other hair types. Love you for that 💜

The WORST is when you have a mix. 3C on top with 2B at neckline and some kind of mess in between. Like havin a bad home perm your whole life. And yes, Viola slays. XD
My hair is pin straight, slippery, and hard to style. Every hair accessory slips off unless I throw an entire can of hairspray in. It kinda looks like 2a when wet, but it goes pin straight when it dries unless I force it into a shape with rollers or a towel. Curling with heat just undoes itself after 30 minutes.
I know I got it easy when it comes to keeping my hair healthy, but sometimes I want to wear pretty hairstyles, too! I want to wear a cute bun sometimes! :(
It’s a blessing in disguise. Your hair is beautiful. I remember wanting to try that Brazilian blowout back in high school. I used to get teased everyday asking if I ever brushed my hair. (I actually did and it got frizzy) I think the moral of the story is to love what you got☺️ I have thick wavy hair but it always gets knotted and I actually will lose things in there😂😭

Viola is our queen and I’ll fight for her. Oh, and I have 4b hair and I know the struggle. So excited to loc my hair up this year though.
Omg I LOVE locs! I’m so excited for you on your journey!
I love my locs. Had traditional locs for 4v years and now I have sisterlocks as of Feb 21. Best thing ever for my 4c hair.
@@brownstar45 I really want sistalocks but I don’t think I can keep them up! So I’m opting for the smallest traditional locs and crossing my fingers.
@@GetGlamFam thank you! I love your channel!
@@SrirachaSandvvitch just seen your reply. For me, I personally like the sisterlocks. Although the process of installing them is very arduous; I love the freedom they afford me. The frizz is more controlled and I can go longer than 4 weeks to redo them. After 2 weeks of palm rolling my hair would frizz up. I couldn't stand it.
Now I have sisterlocks, I do not worry about frizz and my hair looks neater for longer. The only downside is the retightening takes longer, but I'm ok with that. It just depends on what you'll be able to deal with long term. Mine was less frizz, neater locs and a longer break between retightenings.
Good luck on your loc journey. I hope you love it. I do❤. I have no desire to go back to loose natural hair💃🏾❤

@GlamFam Hair & Beauty Thank you...!!! People always think that Asians always have sleek straight hair.. now I'm Japanese but even so it's common for Asians to have wavy and 4B type hair. We just straighten and use sleek and straighten products often.. but the Asians commonly have straight hair is a part of the asian beaty standard that's always perpetuated (a stereotype) just like Asians are commonly white skin and that all brown east Asians are blasian or middle easten (It just isn't true).
Napturaaaaaaaaaal 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Nicely done, and in under a minute!!
I read something about the hair typing system today, namely, that Andre Walker (I may be getting that name wrong), its creator, came out and said that 4c hair was the type that he thought was most limited from a styling standpoint and that it should be processed. I'm paraphrasing, but in view of such sentiments from the system's ultimate authority in a sense, I can understand the ill will towards it from many with textured hair. Honestly, like any tool or classification system, it can be helpful when used by people like you who lack the obvious bias of its creator and who honor and celebrate the diversity of hair types given us by THE Creator. Besides, given the mainstream society's prevalent inclination towards lighter skin and looser curls, I believe that the kinky end of the spectrum would have drawn the existing stigma in ANY curl/coil classification system.
You are completely correct there! Andre initially said that it needed to be relaxed. That was his ignorance speaking. The method I speak of in this video is modified from his method, as this doesn’t deal with texture, only with curl pattern. His dealt with both, and 4b and 4c were added as an after thought.
@@GetGlamFamAn AFTERTHOUGHT Oof, and ouch, the disdain! Nice one, Andre 🙄
@@GetGlamFam I watched a wrenching video today of a sister with 4c locs who got viciously dragged on a site dedicated to (3c and looser) "natural hair bombshells". The owner of the IG page posted her selfie, which she herself had captioned "THIS is 4c hair", and captioned that post, simply and disdainfully "Respectfully....thoughts". What followed was a barrage of vicious, nasty, clearly racist comments ranging from "you need to get a weave" to God knows what else. The owner eventually responded with a "I didn't mean any harm" sort of non-apology, AFTER she pinned the original post with her shady added caption. I'll share the link if you like. I'm not even on IG but it makes me want to mobilize an army of more conscious folks to educate the throng of bigoted ignoramuses who frequent that page.

I don’t know what Asians you know but most Asians I meet have natural pin straight thick 1c hair. Latinos and whites often have 1a-1c pin straight hair (from my experience) and then the other common ones are wavy and curly up to 3b and 3c for Latinos depending on where their heritage is from (mostly Dominicans and Puerto Rican’s i know)
Exactly lol.. 😏
I KNOW this man didn't just tell me, an Asian, that most east/southeast Asians don't have type 1 hair, and that it just "seems"as if they do due to "Japanese straighteners"
Boy if you don't sit tf down-😒🤦♀️
Right?! Idk about which hair type is the most common but Type 1 is definitely anything but rare 😂
Yeah that part I was like 🤔 so you're telling me my whole Asian family has Japanese straightening done.. no lmao born that way.
Yes. Ms. Viola indeed slays.
I’ve admired Viola since I was real young, idk what it is about her but she’s just mesmerizing. So talented!!! 🖤🥺
