Since I don't currently have a 50mm for my Z-mount system, this lens appeals to me based on price and the fact that I would likely use it indoors without the need for speedy focus. As someone who works at a newspaper and occasionally takes photos with my own equipment, I rely more on telephoto or wider-angle zoom lenses. Thanks for the review.
Nice comparison as always, guys. When I acquired the NIkkor Z 50 f/1.8 S with the Z7, I had read reviews that compared it to the Zeiss 50 Otus (a $4K lens) in terms of image sharpness, and it was in that ballpark. And indeed, it's one of my sharpness lenses. So, I was a bit surprised to see just how close the 7Artisans 50 came to the Nikkor in terms of sharpness, though I realize that RUclips image comparisons should be taken with a grain of salt due to image compression algorithms! Well done, 7Artisans!
I picked a lightly used copy of the 50 F1.8 S some time ago for £299... It's a really sharp, beautifully rendering lens with super accurate AF. Not worth bothering with much else. I have a lovely AIS 50 1.2 as well, lovely character but doesn't really come close to the Z 50 S... 😉
@@russandloz Yes they have improved but most don't even give you weather and dust proofing and many other things like autofocus. Better to look for deals or used native lenses for ordinary use cases. Speciality lenses are different like the Loawa 2x and more macros. Very sharp, well controlled lenses but still no weather proofing etc for something to be used in the field mostly.. I still use some legacy and just good quality F-Mount lenses on FTZ's, tremendous value right now too.
Very respectable for a first AF lens from them, but I love my trusty 50mm f/1.8 AFS that cost £100 used. If Sigma ever offer a Z mount 50mm Art I would be very tempted, they look stunning on other mounts! Cheers for the test chaps.
The 7Artisans is 54mm relative to the Nikon. It seems that this comparison sort of proves that you get what you pay for. I'd have to file the 7Artisans away into the "character" category. I'd buy it if I only had enough money to buy a camera body and I needed a lens. 😃👍
Im amazed Nikon are allowing this as i thought they were only allowing third party lenses that didn't complete with their own. Maybe that the focal length is actually a bit different they were allowed. Great news as hopefully see more similar lenses
I started with aps-c cameras several years ago and went down the road of third party lenses and since switching to mirrorless I've stuck to all native glass. Nothing wrong with 3rd party lenses I just don't want to buy a lens twice. Cry once.
I would like to have seen an adapted 50mm f1.8G F-mount lens in the test too (because that’s the even cheaper competition for any £200 50mm off-brand lens for Nikon Z bodies.)
I also think that the DSLR 1.8G 'wants' to be a different lens, at least nowadays. One which shows off a noticeable amount of analog film days charm. A character lens useful for certain styles and tastes. Whereas the 7Artisans wants to be close to a modern, highly corrected, multi-lens-elements 50mm like the 1.8S, as much as possible for the little money. So it is not a 'character lens', neither designed to be one, nor being one accidentally. It is just a slightly lesser and much cheaper 1.8S.
@@tubularificationed Yes very good point. I like to have the option of a character lens and modern for different things. Maybe 7artisans should go down the character route

Yeah the nikon z lens is fantastic, but for those on a budget the 7Artisans isn't that bad. Hopefully they make more and keep on improving

Yes you can get older f mount quite cheap now which is great value
7artisans 50mm 1.05 is my fav lens ever. They are now trying to get into the autofocus land but I will alwqys prefer faster manual character lens 🤠
Yes a agree for some style of shoots

In a way I wish they didn’t allow double lens options then we’d have more options

But with ftz cost with an extra cost too. We would have liked to try the Nikon 40 f2. But we don’t have one
@@russandloz Lots of peeps already have the FTZ
@@Cotictimmy I personally don’t like using them as it adds so much size and imbalance. But I still love using the 28 and 105 1.4 when needed

Wasn't mirroless supposed to make lenses smaller?
In theory. But mine are all bigger lol
@@russandloz In size and price 😉
Have you tried Viltrox 20mm f2.8??
No. Is it any good?
@@russandloz sharp in the centre a bit soft around the edges, but can’t complain for £130 from Viltrox direct.
Why these 50mm f1.8 are so long… I don’t understand…
