I'm pretty sure we'll learn of some restraints on some of these specs with this camera but to me it is one of the more exciting announcements I've seen in quite a while. It'll really be interesting to see what the other manufacturers announce in the coming months. Welcome to the new world of the "Global Shutter" and maybe one day I'll get an invite to a fancy launch event! 🤣
Great video James! I agree with everything you said, including the megapixels being enough. I’m keeping my a7r V too for any time I need more resolution. I got to use it a little and I didn’t see any weaknesses in my opinion. I can’t wait get one!
Thanks Matt, yeah my pre-order is in!@@MattHernandez
It's mind blowing! Sony is really pushing the technology to a new level. This is going to make all the camera manufactures improve their technologies which is a win for the consumer. No flash sync is amazing! So cool!
Deep in your heart, you're switching to Sony 😊
Hahaha 🤷♂
It will be awesome!!
Always appreciate your thoughts...interesting news for sure!!
Thank you for watching!
We photograph pretty much everything here. From school pictures and team - individual to sports, portraits and weddings. No banding in churches! No sync speed! We've been Sony shooters for some time now and we'll probably sell our A1's or R5's to make room for the R9III. Very exciting news!
So much fun to keep up with the gear rumors and see how much ends up being accurate...this release was pretty accurate to the rumors I was reading. Thanks for your thoughts...great channel.
Thanks Gerald, couldn't agree more!
I m still hanging onto my Nikon DSLR. And I've been looking for a next gen camera from Nikon. Last year Nikon finally be able to catch up with the autofocus system with the other brand. I was still deciding if Z8 be my next camera. This Sony a9 3 have just set a new generation bar of the mirrorless. Which sent Nikon back to the starting line pretty much. I think I've to ditch my loyalty of Nikon and start paying attention to Sony. I've been waiting for too long and I think it is time to move on.
Similar thoughts here. I have a D5 and Z7 with a slew of lenses and accessories. Been targeting the Z8 but may have to rethink that.
omg another game changer. hope it can focus in low light,
It is clearly a next level advancement and will push the industry which is great for everyone. I am pretty well set in Nikon and shooting sports having 45 MP for some extra crop space is really nice. Given how fast the Z9 is at 45MP I suspect Nikon is not too far away from being able to do a global shutter with reduced MP sensor.
I was stoked that they finally announced the new Sony 300 mm F2.8 GM for $6000. I’ve had the money set aside for that for a while now. Then later on in the day they announce the new Sony A9iii with these epic specs. My Sony A7iv is definitely going to get sold to get this one. I picked up the A7rv and that love to flip a screen. Makes taking portraits so much easier when you’re doing higher low angles. But I don’t always want to shoot 62 megapixels. But for my sports photos I have tried and true original A9 that I do all my racing photos with, and a lot of my action shots because that camera is at beast in the focusing department. Sony is doing great things and this camera is going to pave the way for even better innovations from other companies. I could care less if it shoots 120 frames per second because I already hate going through 20 frames per second. But 4K 120 will be great with no crop.
Custom director chair.... nice touch! I like the honey comb wall too.... go Hornets ;)
Ha, thanks John!
This is great for professionals and content creators. For the average user this won’t make a difference from the current cameras Sony is putting out for a lot less.
PetaPixel has a great initial review devoid of all hype.
Buffer at 120fps with lossy raw is around 196-200 & with lossless raw its around 125. Even with 20-30 fps it takes a bit of time to clear it.
With 3rd Party lenses, max speed is 15 fps which is a real let down.
You still get some kind of flickr in artificial light, but you can set the release to when it matches the flickr.
The High ISO performance is on par with a 61MP A7R5 which defeats the purpose of a low MP sensor.
I think this camera is mainly aimed at sports & journalism where you need to transfer files quickly & also need a fast camera.
One thing I have noticed about Sony over the years since A7R4, there's always a Catch.
i was going with the Z8 but not now -- WOW! i'll wait for this 1-- guess i'll need new glass
As I mentioned I'll probably put a pre-order in and see what happens with "other" announcements in the interim.
Nowadays you cant go wrong with any camera (i use a Sony A1). If you have a lot of nikon lenses id still stay with them. Its costly moving to different companies.
As a frequent user of strobes outside the flash sync speed just got me in awe... for sports 120 and the pre-shoot stuff man, that really getting me thinking about making the pricey jump for Canon to Sony. Thanks for heads up! I need to figure out which of my kids I'm goint to sell 🤣 may be I don't need 2 kidneys as well...
Tough choices ahead! 🤣
When I heard the rumors of a global shutter on this A9III I was skeptical, it sounded too good to be true and figured it would be 5 to 10 years in the future before it would appear on a full frame camera. It's here now!
This will def be a game changer for some photographers. Will be interesting to see if Canon comes with a global shutter to on the r1, thats what the rumors say and Canon themself Said they Will present a new technological breaktrough for them to. They dont usually do that if its not something big
This will push other manufacturers to get up to speed. I’m a Canon shooter and always will be but good to see this technology come out. Although 120fps is awesome, I complain since getting the R3 at 30fps. Yes I’m able to get those little moments I would have missed at slower fps but damn the culling. A single football game would be 20,000 photos or more. 🤣🤣🤣
Future Canon R1 announcement looks like an also-ran now. LOL
To be a fly on the wall at Canon this morning...haha
To me the global shutter is a massive technical achievement but the only people it really makes a huge splash for is daytime flash shooters. The global shutter opens up some huge creative opportunities with using flash or downsizing flashes.
Don't be so quick to dismiss. Pro sports shooters will eat this up!
sports and wildlife creatives are going to love it just as much!
@@mnelsonHDthat’s true, it’s a really niche camera but for the people in that niche, the pre-release and presumably perfect anti flicker and I suppose occasionally 120FPS needs will buy it. Still to me, flash is the giant leap.
I tend to agree. For daytime flash or any kind of flash where there is some ambient light and a desire to freeze motion, this thing will just be a great flash battery saver.
As a true sports camera, IDK. It has a crazy high buffer speed, but those relatively slow CFeA cards mean you have to sit while that buffer clears. But more to the point, 120 fps is a lot. I tried 120fps at a track meet, just to see if I was missing anything with only shooting 20 fps. All I got was A LOT of the same thing as the hurtlers slowly inches over the hurtles frame after frame.
I don't think this will change the game as many people think. At least in regards to flash. As much as I would like a global shutter for unlimited sync speed (I loved it in the original 1D and the D1x back in the day), it only works with flashes mounted on camera. External flashes are limited to 1/500. And, while that's a bit of a step up, base ISO is now 250, meaning no change in outdoor synced flash expsoure in reality compared to earlier cameras. In fact, that's a 2/3 stop loss in light control compared to the ISO 64 and 1/200 sync I'm using on the Z9.
But, the lack of motion artifacts and flicker will be an advantage.
120FPS RAW is interesting. I use the 120 FPS JPG output from the Z9 for some specialized coverages and have wished for RAW and higher resolution each time. Even still, the buffer is limited there so also not as useful as I need.
But interesting steps in the right direction!
I haven’t heard about the 1/500sec sync speed for OCF. That would definitely be a bummer and keep me from getting it.
I believe base ISO is 250, so IQ will be good to see. We are at the dawn of a new era, exciting times. It's a revolution for strobe work for sure.
Thanks Trev, yeah it's going to be fun pushing the strobes next!
@@QuantzPhoto you are definitely the man to test out the flash related possibilities of this new tech. Look forward to seeing one in your hands. I shoot Fuji and I think in the next wave of camera bodies maybe 2 years from now, one will have this tech.
Cool announcement first and foremost. But the iso250 min setting is worth a sprinkle of skepticism until real photos start showing up in the wild.
Definitely worth a look for flash usage, but it will be interesting to see if it is a little too much of a one-trick-pony for all of the other shooting scenarios.
Yeah like I mentioned in my pinned comment there might be a few gremlins hidden in these specs so time will tell.
If the dynamic rage is good at 1/250 second then it's not a problem. Considering the top shutter speed is 1/90000 sec it would not be a problem to use fast lenses in broad daylight and still control depth of field.
The Canon tech will be the same place very soon, but have you seen the 300 2.8 price? I could only wish a 400 2.8 for Canon was under 10k.
Il reste à voir ce que le Canon R5 mark2 et le R1vont avoir comme nouvelles spécifications. Habituellement ces nouveaux boiters sortiront au printemps juste avant les olympiques.
it's a game changer. excited to see the competition alive and well with canon's 24-105 2.8 and now the a9iii and the 300 2.8. can't go wrong!
Not really!
I see a future convert, #SONY
Ha, if I'm being honest I'm already using Sony for 90% of my video work...
@QuantzPhoto yeah I caught that, but not for stills fully.
I’m using a R6II at the moment. I’m hoping to pick up a used R3 when the R1 comes out.
Nothing wrong with those cameras!
For taking photos one camera enough
@@mohandass3442 what if that one camera fails? What do you tell your client?
Sony A9iii matched with RotoLight AEOS 2 PRO
Lol I just saved up enough for a a9ii hahaha 😢
You still have a few months before it comes out! 💰🤣
every new camera changes something...
Like yourself....I'm BLOWN away. The tech is a quantum leap....generational. HUGE. And naturally, I've been shooting Nikon since 1978. It gets worse; they are historically SLOW to innovate....(Z9, Z8 are great)....so it will be years before (if?) they catch up to Sony's latest. And they will HAVE to....to survive. Can't wait until my rental house gets one this next year....I gotta play with it over a weekend.
What about image quality not quantity
I guess we'll wait for the details...
I couldn't help but notice that the R3 is currently on sale for $5000 (1k off)🤣If the R1 doesn't have comparable specs and cost much more, some people that were on the fence about switching may just go for it. I've been debating which mirror-less system I would get into when moving from Canon DSLR and I really like a lot of what Sony has been putting out along with their open mount system.
I'd have to agree at the current moment!
The R1 should be the equivalent of the A1, which will cost much more.
I think the Canon R1 will have a global shutter. I wonder who will have the camera available to purchase first?
Truly a race to the line! @@bngr_bngr
Hmm…I’ll stick with my R3 for now.
R3 iso famous according to do mark
Who in gods name needs 1/80000?!?! lol. What a crazy number
Ha, stop a bullet??
@@QuantzPhoto hahaha. I suppose so. Seems like you’d also need a high iso to account for the light loss at 1/80000. Seems unusable in my head but maybe I’m wrong!
@@nolansdad55alot of flashes of course 🤣🤣😂
Darken the sky or direct sun as much as you need. Could make some crazy shots with the sun directly in the frame with a black sky and proper exposure on your subject.
@@greggeis918 It's a new frontier!
After 40 years age who will carry this lens
if sony patent the global shutter so no way nikon and canon could do the same.
Global shutters aren't new.
Canon and Nikon have already shown global shutter sensors, and there are a number of patents that are already active.
@@danh2716 show here the link
24.6mp for $6000 USD....sorry, I'm not impressed.
24mp on a high quality sensor beats 50mp on a lesser quality sensor every time
Effective shutter speed is limited by the flash duration! Global shutter for flash outdoors is not that impressive!
Not necessarily and we'll see what happens in a couple months.
Canon just LOST a huge Market segment.... it's Crickets at team Canon. Next years Canon R1 will be re-badged as Canon R2 LOL
Yeah it's going to make for an interesting couple of months for Canon with their impending releases!
