FANTASTIC work James. Period. And a REAL photographer producing REAL work, for REAL clients- what a concept on RUclips, a medium populated with mostly posers.

Rain, excessive wind, extreme cold, wireless interferences for flash communications, cold lens glass fogging in early morning humid environments, general tech gremlins that show up at the crucial moments, smoke machines failing, uninformed security pulling the plug on production, missing tether cables, set interruptions from farm animals, and anxiety induced stomach cramping from all of it. I have backups for backups and still find I have issues. I don't shoot on as big of projects as you're doing but i'm working towards it and my biggest fear is getting a big opportunity and falling flat on my face from all of the above hurdles. Keep up the great work on videos, SOOO valid for real world experiences.

I see you’re another President of the Peter Principle club. Great video showing how so many of us have to hype ourselves up and overcome doubts on new projects. Both frightening and exhilarating (if it goes well).

Great story about the shoots and highlighting the importance of thinking on your feet and adapting to the conditions.

That comment "Just pushing "the sinking feeling" aside is so true -- So much of what I have learned over time is that you need to trust yourself to get the shot, stay in the moment and keep working the problem to make sure you get everything you can out of a shoot. So many times, especially when I was first starting out, it was easy to give up or just let yourself have the excuse that something got in the way of you executing the shoot. My advice is always "keep working the problem... you'll figure it out and maybe even find something better!"
Thanks for the content you produce James -- learned a ton from you!

I've had that sinking feeling in me before on some shoots...."how am I going to make this happen".....but it all worked out in the end and I came out with some amazing photos.

Great stuff, James! Good lessons to be learned for sure.. I always remind myself to FIRST get the shots the client wants… after all, they hired me for my look/style so deliver that, first. THEN have fun and push yourself a little. Wade out into the water.. stick around and see what happens when the video crew starts.. greatness happens. Excited for you on this next adventure!!

Hey James- thanks for another great video and good luck on that next big shoot.
One thing that popped up in this one that can help you and all the others here: If you find yourself in rain and/or wet shoot scenarios again- Turkey Size Oven Roasting bags. The difference is that they're designed to withstand high temps and Zip-Locs aren't. Our strobes can get extremely hot after several pops (not just the bulbs- the capacitors, etc. that it takes to generate the output from our strobes also generate a lot of heat). These help to keep your expensive strobes from turning into a messy pile of goo. Reynold's is probably the most popular brand but I'm sure there are others as well. You can get them at wal-mart, target, grocery stores, etc. for cheap. Because they're turkey sized they fit mostly over strobes. I keep several in my strobe bags and camera bags just so I'm never caught without them.

I can relate to the anxiety part just before the shoot which I experience when working with a new group of people and hoping I can pull it off. I do have a question James, when you are hired for a shoot like these you have shown, does the client's team inform you of what they are looking to see in the finished product ? I understand the uniforms were front and center but did anyone say " hey I'd like to see the soldier in camo uniform with face black, kneeling down with an AR 15 shouldered and the uniformed football player front and center, kind of like a mood board? I guess this is why I like action sport photography because I can shoot what happens and that is the goal, I don't have to be creative and develop a scene in my head. If someone says to me, I'd like it to look something like this, then I'm OK, I can go from there. Where do you think your creativity comes from? Thanks for sharing all the videos you've posted, it really has helped me and I'm sure many other photographers. Best wishes from Ted in Sebastian, Fl.

Hey Ted, some shoots are really specific but these (outside the uniforms detail shots) have not been and things have just come together.
