The Sony a9iii global shutter sensor is revolutionary for filmmakers, and I believe that the Sony A9 mark three shows us the direction where Sony cameras are headed, so if you are a filmmaker, that is wondering why this is what a big deal and what we can expect from something like the A7S four or FX three mark two, keep watching, because Sony has essentially showed us the roadmap.

When the frames don't bend or warp, you can have increased stabilization capability (with crop). Also, with the A93 having a 1/80,000 shutter speed and 120 photos per second, I think this tech might lead to higher than 240p fps, maybe even to high speed camera territory.

Agreed , Sony semiconductors protected that sensor for a few years . There was an older agreement between the semiconductors dept and the mirrorless division that they wouldnt sell their best tech to other competitors for 2 years when they were aiming for their goal of number 1 full frame camera by 2020. Lord 2015-2016 seems so far long ago.. still own our original a9 as my wife’s 2nd wedding cam.. I have a theory even though I’m not a video guy that they may let the global shutter slide into say a a7s model before the a1 II just to really dominate that video side.. maybe a 24 mp a7siv so they can address the 6k crowd. My a1 works great so I may still be with it and we’ll see how this all plays out. Cheers!

The last camera I had with a global shutter was the A-700 which I bought for the super slow motion. Since then, I have wished for a mirrorless with a slow shutter. When the A9Siii was announced, I almost fainted. That is one wish come true, and yes, I will buy the camera. My other wish is for Sony to offer at least 480 frames per second. If that doesn't happen then I shall have to purchase a Chronos which offers over a thousand frames per second in HD.

There will be a A7siV with global shutter Q1 2024. They are going to be busy working on that. That is it!! I am sure they were working on this global shutter on the A7siv and realized that it's great on a Sport camera. That is why they have neglected the A7sIII. As always a great video. Thanks Matt. In my view, there is one really big thing that they can add to future Sony Alpha Cameras, and that is the Android operating system so we can have all the benefits of a truly connected camera, instead of the terrible workflow to move images off the camera onto an iPhone to do editing and sharing. Since that is a big change, and unlikely to happen soon, here is a small change that i would love: when I do copy an image from a Sony Alpha Camera, I have only two resolution options: 2 MP and full resolution. 2 MP is way to low resolution, and full resolution off an A7r V is way too high. Sony should give us 12 MP and 24MP resolutions as options for what gets copied to the iPhone. If Sony listen to you, I would love for you to ask for these features.

As one of the guys who got BURNED a bit with the $6500 Alpha One this year (switching away from my entire Nikon ecosystem) - which overheated on the very first shoot trying Gerald Undone’s suggestion to shoot 8K to 4K over HDMI to the Ninja IN MINUTES - I’ll bet that HEAT is going to be even MORE an issue in this camera body w/o a fan (which the FX3 / FX30 fixed with a fan!)
That said Rolling Shutter is the last function to be breached between a Prosumer vs “Cinema” cameras…
    (Internal NDs are a convenience)
But having a global shutter still strikes me as niche for most of what prosumers purposes…
Especially, if there is any loss of dynamic range.
I’m just pissed that this is $500 LESS than my Alpha!?!
And I do agree - non-global shutter - is still a remnant of the “film” camera on the level of having to have a shutter itself or ISO based on film stock! 😏

Even 10fps in Sony a7 IV got so annoy or headache to select good images from others in quick or busy times and in 120fps makes gigantic headaches for selecting best photos for clients. There is no times curling images for best photos and literally I got annoyed selecting photos from 10fps. 3fps is more than enough. Non decent camera’s win top photos competition like legendary photographer taken in 1930 even before. Camera is just tool and only important is how to use it. Nice video but I disagree that it's revolutionary for filmmakers. I mean what serious filmmaker is shaking their camera back and forth like that to incur rolling shutter? A child could hold a camera steadier than that. Where is the open gate recording? From Sony's website, it only shoots 4K 3840x2160 which is a shame and significantly smaller than the Panasonic S5II open gate 6K 5952x3968 3:2 video using the entire sensor. Why would Sony give it a global shutter using the full sensor for photo but cripple it for video and not allow you to use the entire sensor? Sony has some catching up to do.
