I have an 2017 ES350 with a similar issue, only that it does not go all way down. If I do this project is to remove the shade, honestly is a nice to have! Great video!
OMG! If my rear electric sunshade breaks, I hope it breaks in the retracted/down position so I can just forget about it. What a pain ITA. However, it was a great video!
Just got it done. Found 3 pieces of broken gear total, so 3 chips missing. Just like yours there was plenty of extra grease. Works great now! Will say I made sure to match the main gear orientation as yours in the video, and that seemed to be no issues. Mileage 231k
I followed all your steps to take old one out. I glanced at the floor of shop and saw all these dozens and dozens of parts everywhere . I then realized I'd basically taken my whole car apart for a lousy sun shade. I called cars for kids and donated it next day.
If I had the time, I would poll all lexus owners with the shade who had the same problem caused by the broken gear tooth. Would be a potential class action suit against lexus for not issuing a recall and free gear replacement. BTW I forgot to include a suggested improvement to your video. Would've help to see the underside of the side panels after it were removed to show the location of the plastic anchors and clips.
If you need to do this, You can skip taking the back seats out at all. It's a ton of unnecessary work. You can just take the seat head rests off, Then the seat belt attachments, pop out the rear pillars and pry the back deck up from behind the seats, I just had to do it on my 2008 es350 to install a replacement / upgraded subwoofer. You just have to take your time prying the deck up, It goes right back in like that no problem tho..
Just followed your video & fixed my shade in 3 hours for my 2009 Lexus ES350. Was it a coincidence that the 3rd teeth of the gear was broken on mine as well or possibly a systemic problem with the gear supplier.
I have an 08 Toy Avalon with a rear sun shade that doesn’t get stuck half way, but instead has trouble transitioning from full extension down and vice versa. Do you think that would be gear related? I’m wondering if it just needs a little lube on Doo hickey that slide across the top bar (mine looks more like an X as opposed to a right and left lift lever....if that makes sense). Man this looks like a pain in the rump! 🤣 I'm praying a little lube is all I need
That kind of sounds like it would be. Perhaps have someone push the button for a transition and see if you can hear anything in the shade motor section. If you do hear something, then it most likely is a gear issue. Does it do it sporadically? You would think that my shade is identical to the Avalon's for 2008 at least.
@@shanewazhere Ohh, good tip! I’ll try that. I do hear a faint clicking actually....yeah it struggles sometimes, but typically works, until recently, now it’s locked in the upright and attempts to go down but gets jammed a few inches down so I press it again to keep all the way up. Yeah, you would! It’s funny mine looks more like a beamer sun shade now that I’ve seen some videos - Thanks for the reply!
@@larinavigil5225 Yeah, from what you described, it definitely sounds like there might be some broken teeth in there. I'd tear into it and check it out. It's not as challenging as it looks. Good luck!
You might be right, but when I removed and installed the seat, I did not get the impression that they broke. If they are broken, I have not been able to tell a difference, other than the seat might be easier to un-attach from the clip now?
@@---fm1fx sounds like the same issue I had, but your gear tooth probably broke in a different place. I’d open it up and see if there is a gear tooth wedged somewhere.

I have the same thing happening with my 2014 Avalon Limited... It happens the same as yours, when going down and clicks continuously for about 10 - 15 seconds, then finally stops. Looks like this will be a weekend project that I won't be looking forward to do soon. Have you figured out your issue?
Hi Shane, thanks for the video,a real struggle but worth it.We just bought a 2013 es300h from the Lexus dealer. The shade goes up and down fine, but the clicking issue happens when lowering. From what you mentioned about the limit switch, that was my first guess since I am an electrician. Seeing it (thanks again for the video)I am certain that it could be my case. The dealer said it was a long wait to get a replacement,so they dropped the price by $1000. We accepted the offer and will get the car in a few days.I may take a shot at fixing or just leave it and get the windows tinted. Good work at fixing it,too many people just don’t want to do anything but replace things. Cheers from a new (to us) Lexus owner.
@@shanewazhere thanks. I just pushed the button to put the shade down and forced it with my hand simultaneously. Now it stays there and doesn't bother anymore. I'm not going to be bothered for a shade, it's not worth the hassle
Take the whole car apart for the rear screen... 😏🤔 It was day when you started and night when you finished removing the real panel. Great dedication, but this is a no for me.
Toyota should have fixed for free. They chose to use crappy gear in motor unit. I just pulled the fuse on mine. Far too much effort and time just to wind up with broken panels etc.
I managed to fix my car because of you, thank you again
Glad it helped!

Thank you for sharing this video. It's look like you take more than one day to get the sun shade out. Very useful.
It would probably only take you like 3 hours tops, I just started late and had some stuff going on in-between. Thanks!

Any idea how to fix it if the shade doesn’t go up at all and I just hear the motor squeak when I press the button??
Maybe the first few teeth that are supposed to catch have broken off. Might be worth it to open it up and check.
What is the number of the rear blinds to buy? I own a 2009 Lexus ES350, it does not have the rear blinds
hello bro, so it was only fixed with grease or did you run the wheel that did not reach the broken teeth?
Pretty much, yeah. I removed the broken gear teeth and cleaned up gear and then put grease on the gear from the excess inside the gear box.
I was really impressed with it , can you do mine? What state are in ?
Thanks. Utah.

I have another issue with an es300h. When the shade goes all the way down (till the end) it starts clicking like crazy, as if there was no stop.
I would recommend opening the gear box and make sure that the limit switch is working properly or that all the gear teeth are intact.
