It’s like when Mike said “I loved you from the moment I saw you in the woods” like there is not way you would fall in love with some random bald child in the woods-
While your argument is entirely valid and fair, I’d like to argue that it’s possible that love at first sight exists, even if I don’t believe in it. It’s possible that in a story like this, with literal shadow monsters and telekinesis, it’s not totally absurd that they fell in love at first sight. The only reason I doubt it is because Mike’s actions speak way louder than his words. He showed he didn’t love her at first, he showed that his feelings for her have been a question mark because of his behavior. But this is also all objective and it completely depends on who you are as a person and how you view love.

It is so crazy how queer coded Mike is. When you put everything together, I’d say he’s more queer coded than Will. And Will is the one who’s canonically gay and in love with Mike since s1 🫢
I completely agree! That’s why I started this series, that and I wanted to discuss Mike’s perspective and character seeing as it’s such a confusing and controversial topic within the fandom.

This was great. Another observation is that Max tells El that Mike will probably come back apologizing and beg to be taken back, which doesn’t happen. But he does do something very similar with Will in the rain scene.

with the 'the first I love you' scene parallel, I think it is Steve realizing that robin doesn't love him that way and mike realizing that he doesn't love El that way

for the part where mike lies to el about what hopper said, i always interpreted that as- mike isn’t honest with her because he doesn’t truly want to be with her. if he did he would probably just have told el, hey! ur dad said this to me, and everything would’ve probably worked out somehow, but Mike sees what Hopper told him; subconsciously or not, as an out of him and El’s relationship. Which is why he takes it so easily.

Mans bikes twenty minutes across town in the pouring rain to make sure Will is okay, but can't go over to his girlfriend's house the next day and talk to her for five minutes...
Maybe the reason Mike lies is that deep down he knows he's not in love with El and if he tells the truth the problem can be fixed (and they'll keep spending a lot of time together) but if he lies it gives him a break from the charade.
And maybe the reason he doesn't seem to know what he did wrong is because he's thinking of El as a girlfriend, not a person. Besides that, his role model for that situation is his dad (who in season 1 just calls "What'd I do?" as Karen walks away, clearly mad at him for not supporting her).

I am so obsessed with these videos, they make my day so much better. Plus it's so fun to hear others opinions, and to hear other people having the same opinions as me. I am so obsssed with Mike's side of the story. I feel like he get's way too much hate, and I think it's great that there are some videos dedicated to just Mike's "prespective".

I LOVE hearing other people’s opinions, especially when they are with the mindset of seeing more perspectives.
I am obsessed with uncertainty in characters. I love the wondering, the evidence, the Sherlock part of watching a show like this. Mike intrigued me because he was such a question mark that so many people disliked, and when I spent almost a month rewatching the show and only watching him, I realized how fascinating a character like him can be under the surface.

I absolutley love your rant videos beacuse I agree with everything you say and it's so fun to know we feel the same about a topic we both love! And the Lesbian mindflayer has similar conten, and her videos breaks down the scenes so nicley, which helps me understand for example the tention in that particular scene way more than before. I'm not sure i have heard about your favourites. I am fairly new to the fandom, and only recently found out my love for these videos, but I will check them out!

ignoring that, when i first saw the scene where will told his mom "I'm not gonna fall in love" i found it really relatable and lo and behold, I'm aro/ace :)
that personal connection made it kinda hard for me to see byler and even will's queer coding until season 4 but i think the queercoding is really well done
Personally I totally understand personal connection clouding judgement/making you see things a certain way. Because I’m queer and neurodivergent, I get super attached to the idea that the characters I love are like me and sometimes that clouds my judgement.
I talk about that a little in this video.

I'm so happy that you're back. I understand life can get a bit hectic. Totally fine. Really love your analysis vids. I remember feeling the sheer utter whiplash of going through S2 and seeing how close Will and Mike were to S3 where it feels like a brick wall is between them. Because everything just felt so drastically different. So different that unless it was purposeful didn't make sense to me. Especially with Mike. Everything about the rain scene hurts me to my core. Although I did wish that they had actually continued Will and Mike's storyline. Everyone else had their storylines continue. But it felt like theirs got cut short after episode 3 and was semi resolved in the finale. Though, that could be intentional but I dunno. I've kinda always felt like S3 feels like a big disconnect season in the storyline of Mike and Will. Even taking Mike away from Will, his character just feels a bit bare if you're only looking at him from a surface level. He goes from leader in S1, supportive best friend in S2, and then S3 it feels like his role is to just be El's boyfriend. This is one of the reasons why I've always been into digging deeper into Mike's character because the train tracks don't add up to the destination we arrived at sometimes when you're just looking at the map. And I totally agree with your idea that Jonathan knows. Upon rewatch, Jonathan always seems to be around or watching Mike and Will during important moments. Especially in the later seasons. And his expressions during those scenes give off the vibes that wheels are turning in his head.

The contrast between Mike and Will in season 2 vs 3 really hit me when I first watched. Mike and Max were always my favorite characters so I noticed them the most. And I used to like Mileven so I remember being so confused as to why it seemed like their dynamic had done a full 180
I’ve memorized the rain scene cuz I’ve watched it so many times, it really hits me. And knowing that Noah is gay and was closeted at the time, adds to the emotion in my opinion.
It felt like everyone’s storylines had a step by step kind of progression. With jancy and jopper and lumax going through the motions. From friends to lovers. But Mileven felt so different, like their storyline wasn’t actually planned, which made it feel off.
Season 3 felt so strange, and 4 definitely made me so happy because it returned to an aesthetic I thought really worked for this show
If Mike’s storyline isn’t more complicated, I’m gonna be sad for him because they really did just reduce who he was to El’s boyfriend and it broke my heart. I really saw some growth in him and I wish they didn’t abandon that for a comedic breakup

and then as the conversation gets more serious it zooms in closer, happens in both a lumax scene and a byler scene. the scenes are just EXACTLY the same.

The song "The First I love You" (which you talked about) I find really interesting because "love" is the only word not capitalized, which - especially considering the Robin and Steve parallel - could mean platonic love

And I love the idea that this much detail was put into the scene, making one word lowercased to add a layer of depth to the parallel.

you are literally a byler mastermind i love it. also idk if anyone else has mentioned it in the comments but during the kiss scene between mike and el where mike is in front of the closet, they are in will room i think and the walls are y e l l o w. also el is holding a teddy bear that came fromt he closet and i've seen some people say that the teddy bear represents will because it probably belonged to him since it was in his room and 'in the closet'. i find it interesting that the whole time they are kissing the bear is between them, as if to represent will coming between them. i think i also read something in the byler slides about bears representing will like the colour yellow but idk too much about that. amazing video!!!

Firstly, I must say these are very interesting connections you have made. I never noticed any of them, which shows how I am oblivious to everything apparently. But about Mike's emotional maturity thing, I would argue that it does make sense for it to be "inconsistent," as you say. Personally, I can be extremely emotionally mature about some things, but then in other situations, I can be very oblivious. I think that is normal for humans to be that way.
Sometimes we do things that just don't make sense to other people, but its because we just didn't have awareness of those things at the time. We can never have awareness of everything, thats why we need other people to tell us when we do something wrong. Maybe girls don't feel that way, idk, maybe they are more emotionally mature. That's just how I feel, that awareness can be so drastically different at different times.
In DnD, they have a "perception" stat, and sometimes you have to roll for perception, and one time my character rolled really low on perception even though she is a highly perceptive character, and missed out on information that she would have otherwise been the only one in the group to figure out lol.
Anyway, so Mike being oblivious to what he did wrong with El made sense to me just because he is a teenager and growing up is hard. This could mean that he only feels platonically toward El, especially because he has had a hard time saying that he loves her. However, it could also be interpreted that its just him being afraid of his newly developing feelings.
Once I realized Will was gay, I was really excited to see him pair up with someone which I hope will happen in the show. But I was thinking "who will this new character be? Will it be an entirely new character in season 5?" When I thought about this, I thought it doesn't make sense that he would meet someone new and fall in love with them all in one season and have a happy ending wrapped up so quickly. Especially after being heartbroken by Mike. But it also didn't make sense that he would be paired with any current character. So I was curious.
Now, the idea that he could actually be paired up with Mike makes me really happy. I think if Mike is queer it would make sense but if he is straight it would also make sense. I'm excited to find out.
That being said, these types of feelings are really hard to write with children. Feelings like this are really confusing to children (at least in my experience) so it's hard to write being in love as a child. Its completely possible for people to fall in love as children and end up together for the rest of their lives. But its really hard to identify those feelings as a child, so things can change drastically. Its really interesting, what can children be aware of romantically, and how does that progress? It varies wildly depending on who you ask.

He lies to El in the first place because even though Hopper had been threatening, he never actually FORBADE him to see her! And since when has Mike listened to Hopper when he has his mind set on something. So really, he's trying to make an excuse for the fact that he actually DOESN'T MIND not seeing her. Which, again, if he actually had authentic feelings for her, he would've been more straightforward about the whole thing.
In conclusion, Gay.

Blue and purple don’t make red, but red and blue make purple. Instead of the relationship being defined relative to the two people, is this an allusion to El being defined by Mike relative to the idea of the relationship?
I love this concept!!! I absolutely think this could be the case.
I feel like El, and Millie has even said this, needs independence from Mike. She needs to grow as her own person.
Her being their color really does make sense to me. Because she’s attached to the idea. I think even Millie was too. In interviews she describes Mike and El as inseparable and practically married when they break up in the first few episodes. It never made sense to me. And Finn never said much about it.

It also speaks to the overarching theme of Stranger Things being about resisting the forces of conformity (expressed through the government, adolescent peer pressure, small town societal norms, etc) and being true to oneself rather than what others think you are or should be (I mean, it’s in the name of the series)

I think Mike has three things 1 he has depression and # 2 he also has ADHD and fact number 3 he has dyslexia / post traumatic stress disorder, you might do a separate video on those mental illness of Mike wheeler for part 1 and 2 also part 3 / 4 and 5 and see what he has in that criteria of mental breakdowns that he has in season 1 season 2 session and 3 and session 4

Hi love your vids about Stranger Things. My friend and I, just binge watched it for the first time a few weeks ago, now I'm obsessed. I'm a huge Byler fan. I'm curious please if you see this, or have time to answer, the RUclipsr that you said explained Wills Unreliable Narration. I have always been a fan of unreliable narrators in books and stories. I did not realize Will was an unreliable narrator, I just didn't pick up on it. I didn't catch the name of who you said delved into this. When I typed in Will an unreliable narrator Stranger Things, it did not yield anything really. So any help you can provide, I'm very interested in delving into Will's unreliable narration. i agree that mike might have ADHD - i think both him AND will have it (and robin, but theres an official video on that!), i think they have the opposites types and thats one of the reasons they understand each other so well lol
I'm autistic but honestly with the biking home scene, I think he's trying to seem straight and is doing all he can to make it look like he is even when he doesn't want to, and thats why he sounds so monotone and unsure of himself

1 i think he lied because he partially wasn't supposed to see her but also I think he just didn't want to. Like if he told her what happened she'd be mad at Hopper. 2 I think he did know what he did wrong I just think he didn't want to come to terms that he was acting insensitive like we see his father being(adding on to this, the way he saw real relationship growing up were his parents who clearly didn't get along)
I also want to add on I think this season has the most queer coding. Specifically in the fact it shows how Mike reacts in the relationship. Like he focuses so much on El forgetting everyone else, and I think it's because he's scared if it stops and they break up people will know. Also in the breakup scene between him and El he doesn't go agter her he doesn't really even fight he just kind of stands there but when Will leaves Mike, Mike bikes all the way across town in the pouring rain to apologize. It's weird he would do thay for a "friend" but not for the person he's supposed to like
Another thing, in their argument we see Mike really seeming sad and like he does care, but I think when he realizes how he's been nice and kind he's afraid Will and the others will figure him out and that's where he says "it's not my fault you don't like girls" it's just so out of place because he was being empathetic and really trying to apologize and then says that and I think it was a way of him trying to push the blame of his feelings onto Will. Which is also why I think he's being so mean. We see (possibly) two different forms of internalized homophobia with Will blaming himself and with Mike blaming Will for his feelings. Like it's Will's fault.
ALSO I noticed that The Duffers may be using Will's queer character as a way to distract from Mike's. Also by putting El of course, I just think that may be why idk thouhj

Wait, season 4 breakup? I've watched it 3 times and I don't remember them breaking up is season 4, am I missing something?
I just need s5 I need to see if byler is endgame for real and stop being delusional
Regardless of wether it’s real or not, I just had fun with this journey, and if it’s not canon then I just hope everyone gets an ending they deserve and I hope everyone is able to find what makes them happy (and if Mileven is endgame, I hope they work through their communication conflicts and they are able to work through their personal struggles.)
At the end of the day, they are their own characters and as long as they get the ending their characters deserve I don’t care what happens with the ships.
I do understand that there will be disappointment amongst all shippers though regardless of season 5’s outcome.
I hope knowing that regardless, the writers care about their characters and are writing them an ending they deserve (hopefully), hopefully that’ll will give you peace of mind.
Something I love about ships (for me) is that they don’t have to be canon for me to enjoy them. So I hope that Byler is also something you are able to enjoy regardless of the show’s outcome.

@@MarshmallowSketches made very much sense I love byler and hopes they will be endgame cause I don’t wanna get made fun of for believing that they would’ve been endgame and Milevens come barking down my back talking about some told you so. And all that but I love byler and I hope the duffers give them a good ending together. And even IF they aren’t endgame I’ll still ship them regardless.
I totally understand that! I am also nervous about backlash but I just remind myself that I love analyzing things and if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.
I have so many shows and so many ships I like, this is just one of them.
And seeing as I don’t dislike Mileven, I actually think they are adorable in season 3, I’ve always found “ship wars” to be a bit unfair to non-canon ships that are just existing for fun (hope that makes sense)

my take on "i dump your ass" scene is that it was supposed to be comedic because it's not a serious break up, it's almost manipulative since later on max and el talk about how mike will crawl back apologizing (or smth like that i dont remember specifically)
they are just teenagers after all, i remember my classmates used to break up with their lovers all the time and i never understood it.
also it's super weird to me that it took mike so long to apologize to el but with will not only he says sorry immediately but follows him and tries again, it feels like with every one else he keeps finding excuses and kind of blames it on the other party but with will he's always ready to take the blame. and it's peculiar to me that mike and will's fight was taken seriously and el and mike's wasn't.
btw it's not about mike and will but i wonder if later on lucas is so apologetic to will because he was reminded what will went through and maybe picked up on the fact that will is just missing the old times that he wasn't really around for and didn't get enough of.
lmao your "am i crazy" hits close to home. i've been through klance and so many things just made sense about them and then it wasn't real. but if mike isn't queer coded then it's just super weird really.
Yeah mileven break up wasn't meant to be serious because they were never going to break up, hence season 4 when she said "You never say it" its clear its serious because mike isn't loving her the way she wants.
- the one with will and mike in the rain that's clear to be serious because its showing the audience a pivotal question "oh is will gay, or does he genuinely not like girls?" That was serious as hell. Because eventhough will has never said he's gay, its very clear he is, obviously in season 4.
- I definitely think we'll get serious scenes with mike, Will and el in 5. But I think its clear now in season 5. Mike will have no issue telling el how much he loves her, especially in his season 4 monologue.

it's not clear at all. they weren't even talking in the end of 4th season. if el was truly only worried about her lost battle with one then it's a bit weird that she's so avoidant of mike, her boyfriend who just said something el wanted him to say for a long time. won't you take comfort in your partner if you felt so bad?

they all worry about one, will and mike freely talk about it and mike comforts will, not el.
@@coldmir1258 I think it's clear? I mean she begged mike to tell her she loved him, he explained to will before he had the chance to tell el first. That he's scared she doesn't need him anymore. And he said during his monologue.
Secondly mike tells will "she's never lost like this before" meaning, shes upset, angry and confused and she has no idea if max is alive, she's accepted the reason for mike not saying it, he's explained it and then said it? She accepted it and therefore doesn't need to go on. We didn't see what happened in the van on the way home chances are they spoke.
