The scene where Nancy says she doesn't like Jonathan and Mike says he doesn't like El I think also illustrates that Mike thinks people are telling him the truth. When Dustin says a few minutes later that Nancy and Jonathan are probably sucking face Mike is confused and I think it's because he assumed Nancy was being honest about telling each other everything and therefore about not liking Jonathan. (I think Mike was probably hurt when he learned she'd lied.) And that adds to the idea that Mike answered honestly. It also would mean Mike trusts people so much that he makes choices based on their dishonesty.

I've seen so many people adamant about how Mike can't be queer because there aren't any hints. And if he were, he would've said so already. Funny. People said the same thing about Will too. And it's like they forget the time period this show is set in. The 80's. Of course Mike, Will and Robin aren't jumping out of the closet in joy. And not just the time period. But the location too. A majority of the town thinks Will was hatecrimed and down away with for being queer. And a good portion of them are okay with that and even joke about it(which also reminds me that Lonnie used to insult and ridicule him for not being more "manly" and that makes me sad). So I'm glad they're giving this plotline the buildup it deserves. And I definitely think there's something going on with Mike beneath the surface. Side note, these boys thought they found the body of their close friend. In middle school. Get them all some therapy. That's so awful.

I rewatched the scene when Lucas, Mike and Dustin see Will after he woke up in hospital, multiple times, and I noticed that not only did Mike give Will the longest hug out of all of them, but after Dustin hugged Will, there’s this really short shot of Mike smiling. It’s so pure and Mike is so happy, it brings me so much joy. Also, when Mike and Will were talking about how “the demogorgon got Will” and “Eleven stopped it”, Will and Mike were staring at each other THE WHOLE TIME. THEY COULDN’T TAKE THEIR EYES OFF OF EACH OTHER!!
One thing that breaks my heart even more about the cliff scene is that when Mike looks down, we can see the rocks below him. He knows he isn’t going to hit the water. He is going to hit the rocks. If he jumped or took a run he might have hit the water, but he just steps off. I know we know that hitting the water from that height would still be almost certain death but if you broke the surface tension you might survive, but hitting the rocks is even less likely to be survivable
I think when he was doing his monologue to help save El the “love at first sight” he talked about may have actually been about Will. In season 2 he tells will that meeting him on the swing set was the best decision he ever made and it seems so much more genuine.
It seems more genuine because he was lying to El, the poor girl. Like, there's a whole season of evidence that proves be definitely didn't love her from the moment he met her or that he didn't know he loved her either 😅
I’m worried that the Duffers will chicken out and just kill Will off in some heroic way to avoid the complexities of his and Mike’s relationship. If they made mike suddenly not like will back it would be disappointing. Very disappointing. Because why would they give us so many hints/ details that Mike could be gay? I feel like Mike likes Will romantically but he likes el in a platonic way.
I find Mike being bi more likely than him being gay. I don't think he is faking his feelings for El. However, I also think he does sense Will being into him and that confuses him. Maybe he is dealing with internalised homophobia, that's what it felt like when he didn't hug Will at the airport despite being able to hug other male characters.
Okay, this is kinda long. I’m a writer so I really enjoyed your analysis on this subject. The colors used for Mike’s clothes tells a lot If you read deeply into his emotions and how to connect to each scene you mentioned using the meanings of chakras. Hear me out… It seems Mike wears a lot of blue which ties into literally emotion and feelings. The lighter color of blue is connected to communication/throat chakra while the darker blue (close to indigo) is about the third eye/the other side/wisdom which is important with his determination to stay locked into Will being alive while everyone else (except Joyce) believes he is dead. Yellow is about will power, confidence, courage, warrior mentality. It is connected to the solar plexus which is like a small sun that is always burning/never giving up. Green is the heart chakra and it is obvious in its meaning; the character is always mixing emotions (blue) with his heart (green) and tying it with courage (yellow) as he struggles with his own identity (his new/unfamiliar feelings for El) and looking for Will (his familiar/old feelings for his best friend. Also Mike and Will are very creative; Will with his art work and Mike’s great Imagination as dungeon master in D&D. It would be cool to think one day Mike and Will creating a comic together. You are most welcome! It is very interesting how script writers use so many different elements to create a scene or a character. Especially when it’s in relation to the scene itself. Red in the chakras is connected to your root chakra which is being grounded and feeling safe…it your power base. White and black are not connected to the chakras, but the colors in spirituality link to purity and innocence. Black leans more towards protection and also grounding. A lot of people are unaware how much spirituality and chakras are tied into writing scenes for movies and television. That also goes into colors that are used in sets and scenes. It’s so fascinating and it also helps to strengthen you as a writer. You also mentioned music… That is very important when you use it in a scene! As we all know the Duffer brothers never miss a chance to use clues and little Easter eggs throughout their show. PS - i’m sorry I just read that you said blue… Not black… Blue is emotion like I said but has different variance in the depth of color. Darker blues are connected to the third eye which is the other side like I said but almost like a psychic awareness and emotion which is connected to the heart which is green. Light blue connects to the throat chakra which is clear communication. It’s funny when Mike confronts Troy he is wearing dark blue and light blue. he seems to at that time has the courage to confront Troy using his voice even though he knows he’s probably going to get his butt kicked. He doesn’t care.

I’ve always adored the intentionality behind the colors in this show: particularly the primary colors with the navy blues and brick reds and mustard yellows to really hammer in the 80s but also to ascribe meaning to each hue. I’ve also always and solely payed attention to those three primaries, but I was so excited every time you brought up green!! I only noticed green things since s3 as the season was so full of color. And from the way Dustin often wears green, Jancy wears navy green in s2 when they go on their mission to expose the lab, and Mike and Lucas wear green when biking out in the to rain to apologize to Will, to name a few moments, all these instances to me show unity. And this video made me realize how much Mike wore green in s1, really highlighting how he drew that line to Will and strove to reunite the Party.

I didnt see it until these videos (I noticed Will because it was obvious in season 4). I used to ship lots of couples in past tvshows, gay couples, but none of them were canon in the end, even when there were hints and insinuations (which ended up being just queerbaiting),, so I got tired and I started giving for granted the heteronormativity. I did that even when I watched Our Flag Means Death, but it was so obvious later in the eps that I couldnt not see it, but with other shows, it has been surprise after surprise, and I am so glad tv is changing in that sense. I just got too early to watch tvshows, and in the beggining of millenia it was all so straight! But now it's changing and I can quite assume it yet. I am always waiting for disappointment. I didn’t understand the Byler thing at first cause I only could see Mileven but that changed last season and looking back I see a lot more signs now. I do think Mike likes El but he’s not in love with her and his feeling for Will and Wills feeling for him are coming too the surface so he’s grappling with that in the latest season. I definitely think he could like Will back.

For example, when explaining to El why he couldn't hang out in season 3, he seems much more nervous and on edge. And in season 4, when they argue because he never tells her he loves her, he's much more defense. His love confession in season 4 seems more like a lie than this scene tbh

I know this is from a year ago, but I wanted to add that your video is the one that made me realize that, while Mike believes Will to be somehow alive when he jumps from the quarry ledge, he also hasn't yet learned that the body he saw being pulled from the quarry was a fake. From his point of view, leaping into the quarry might have represented a conceivable method of joining Will in the Vale of Shadows, while also helping to save Dustin.

I've always been a byler, I'm convinced Mike has always loved Will *that way* but I do think Mike did like El, or at least he thought he liked her, but he was just a preteen, and he might be autistic as well. But with time things got even more complicated and he got used to being with her, and he just accepted that he was in a relationship that didn't bring him and her any joy. That's so sad.
The way you described the snowball and Mike’s intent with asking out El reminded me of a common experience between queer women: picking a boy that you tolerate and saying you have a crush on him just to seem more “normal” or to fit in with your friends at sleepovers. You mentioned it a couple times with both Mike and wills clothing that they wear designated colours (Mike blue and Will yellow) I notice that throughout the seasons not only do they constantly wear those colours but at times they will switch colours. Also things in the backround being blue and yellow (like the lights in the roller rink in S4). You also mentioned the triangles on wills gown, fun fact triangles are supposedly meant to represent the lgbtqia community. We see triangles on many characters clothing such as mike (more in S4) but also with robin who is canonically a lesbian.

I just went through and rewatched s1 recently and something interesting I noticed is, in my opinion, the only 2 times we explicitly see Mike doing anything to indicate he likes El romantically is directly after someone else TELLS him that (they think) he has a crush on El. The first time is after Lucas mentions that Mike is obsessed with El by stating that "Mike loves her so much, lets get married". Mike brushes it off but in the next scene with El when they are walking on the tracks they have a little heart to heart and Mike gives her a look that could indicate he DOES have feelings for her. Almost like it wasnt something he thought about until the idea was introduced to him. The other scene is after the talk with Nancy, when she asks him if he likes El. I never noticed the blatant difference in the way the two express their denial until watching your video and it blows my mind how vastly different it is. Im now inclined to believe that he was most likely being genuine that he really didnt like El. Of course the romantic indicator afterwards is the fact that Mike kisses El after asking her to the Snow Ball. While I agree with your interpretation of how Mike could potentially be feeling, I also feel like it could also be " People keep saying this is how I feel, so I must feel that way." Something important to note too is just how young they are in s1. I believe they are meant to be like 11/12. So its very real that this is meant to be their first experiences with crushes and that Mike genuinely doesnt know what it feels like to have a crush on someone. As someone who was a young closeted queer kid growing up in a small Midwestern town, I definitely dealt with a lot of internalized homophobia. A lot of my early straight "crushes" were just projections of what I THOUGHT I was supposed to be feeling based on what the other "normal" kids around me were saying. And while I don't deny that Mike does genuinely care about El, I feel like he may he confusing platonic with romantic feelings. Its been established that Mike up until this point has had little to no positive interaction with a girl that he isn't related to. It is also established, by MIKE, in s4 that he views his relationship with Will differently than that of the rest of the party. Since finding Will is Mikes main focus is s1, its easy to assume that his feelings, platonic or romantic, for Will are at the forefront of his mind throughout the season. Mike knows that the feelings, platonic or romantic, that he has for El in s1 is different from his feelings for Will and any other girl he has previously interacted with before. It would be easy to assume, based on the fact that they are so young and they don't know any different, that he could be interpreting his feelings into meaning he has a crush on El. Something I think that gets overlooked however, is that how Mike interacts with El is very similar to how he interacts with Lucas and Dustin, and that he spends the season trying to integrate her into becoming a member of their party. Like I mentioned previously, the only times where we see him act differently are when its presented to him that those feelings he has are romantic. Don't get me wrong, he could genuinely just be experiencing his first crush on El, but it is so interesting to think about. Especially with all the other subtle queer-coding moments we have for Mike in s1.
22:34 man it’s funny how your memory can mess with you ‘cause before you played this clip, I (ex Mileven, now Byler shipper for a few months now) could’ve sworn Mike was just as shifty about his denial as Nancy. Like I thought I remembered him breaking eye contact and getting fidgety and his voice stuttering. But wow, he’s actually so earnest in his delivery?? And now we have the benefit of the other seasons to show us how much of a stuttering mess he gets when he’s lying (Mileven fight scene in s4) and how little he stutters and how earnest he sounds when being honest (“That’s just not true!” from the Rink o’ Mania fight). In this case, he sounds way more like the latter than the former. In fact, when Mike lies, he breaks eye contact and turns his head away just like Nancy does here. And they do a good job tricking the viewer because Nancy’s lie primes us to expect that Mike is also gonna lie. Mike reacts to Nancy’s denial with an accepting nod, so he thinks she’s being honest. It’s we the audience who know she’s lying because of dramatic irony. The depth from the writing & acting is honestly so amazing😭😭
in the police station scene, joyce shows concern about will having disappeared because some kids were bullying him for being queer, like "they might have done something to my son", ted's speech at the table right after nancy leaves, It could be a clear implicit homophobic speech from him saying that mike, because he is also queer, could suffer the same as will!! other thing i want to point is:
is that in season 4, lucas will try to become someone "normal" because he couldn't stand being bullied anymore, lucas' bullying was always related to him being black and nerdy, so in season 4 he wants to be popular and leaves the hellfire club to focus in basketball, I believe mike, who possibly has internalized homophobia, tried to do the same in season 1! will's bullying was always offensive and mainly related to his sexuality, ted's comments about mike show that just like will's father, mike's father himself was implicitly homophobic towards mike!! to change that, just like lucas did in season 4, mike believed he was in love with el, he was impressed with her so I believe he thought it wouldn't be difficult to "love" her
did you know that in the Stranger Things play "the first shadow" Karen wanted to read lines with Patty (Henry's gf) so she could kiss her? She's definitely bi or just a sapphic, Mike is not the only queer Wheeler, i think that maybe she's gonna say it in s5 to Mike after he comes out in s5 to reassure him that she's not mad at him and that she understands him

The part that Eleven wearing a yellow suit in the woods when mike was trying to find will is kind of like really Mike trying to find will inside el and so that is why Mike is still dating el and like trying to hide his true feelings for Will by using El. it's like hiding his true identity from everyone with using El.

One thing I realized is that El mentioned Will’s painting to Mike in the Letter at the beginning. So, he was aware that Will was working on a painting that could possibly be for a girl he liked. Then will brought said painting to the airport with him. Mike asked about it, but then he avoids asking further after he’s told by Will that it’s the painting. He even seemed even more awkward after hearing that 🌞

I never saw the hints, and I usually see hints where there arent lol like in sHERLOCK (Altough that was queerbaiting for me, pure evul sick queerbaiting). This is probably because they are kids and I didnt think they would code them as queer, since homophobia still exists, especially among the prolifes and stuff that always say the kids must be protected at all costs, even from sexual education, which I find really important so they detect perverts. But now that I watched all seasons again, indeed there's something more about will and mike's relationship. OMG they are so cute. I hope they get together. Love born from friendship is the best.

Here’s the Unanswered Question - was Finn ‘in’ on this?’ He was so very young - & there are insights that must have been in the script…I remember Finn saying that they were given their lines on the morning of the actual shoot! Later, he seems perfectly at ease playing ‘Boris’ (wonderfully!) in ‘The Goldfinch’: Boris & Theo’s bi-sexuality is only hinted at in the movie, but it certainly is not in the novel… All this gives one a lot to think about …my daughter came out at 19, much to my relief - I felt that she’d been sitting on it for some time… With ‘Stranger Things’ it seems that production (colour schemes, etc) went toa ‘lot of trouble’ to anchor the story in a subliminal way… So, the question remains, ‘were the kids aware that the viewers were being manipulaterd?’ My relief that Finn Wolfhard’s coming out as bi, has had the effect of smoothing the path in his career, & vice versa, is total: also great that his life is built on the rock of a very supportive family, without which, nothing might be possible: Thanks for your insights, take care & be well in ‘23 🙏🏻💔🙏🏽

The scene where Nancy says she doesn't like Jonathan and Mike says he doesn't like El I think also illustrates that Mike thinks people are telling him the truth. When Dustin says a few minutes later that Nancy and Jonathan are probably sucking face Mike is confused and I think it's because he assumed Nancy was being honest about telling each other everything and therefore about not liking Jonathan. (I think Mike was probably hurt when he learned she'd lied.) And that adds to the idea that Mike answered honestly. It also would mean Mike trusts people so much that he makes choices based on their dishonesty.

I've seen so many people adamant about how Mike can't be queer because there aren't any hints. And if he were, he would've said so already. Funny. People said the same thing about Will too. And it's like they forget the time period this show is set in. The 80's. Of course Mike, Will and Robin aren't jumping out of the closet in joy. And not just the time period. But the location too. A majority of the town thinks Will was hatecrimed and down away with for being queer. And a good portion of them are okay with that and even joke about it(which also reminds me that Lonnie used to insult and ridicule him for not being more "manly" and that makes me sad). So I'm glad they're giving this plotline the buildup it deserves. And I definitely think there's something going on with Mike beneath the surface.
Side note, these boys thought they found the body of their close friend. In middle school. Get them all some therapy. That's so awful.

I rewatched the scene when Lucas, Mike and Dustin see Will after he woke up in hospital, multiple times, and I noticed that not only did Mike give Will the longest hug out of all of them, but after Dustin hugged Will, there’s this really short shot of Mike smiling. It’s so pure and Mike is so happy, it brings me so much joy. Also, when Mike and Will were talking about how “the demogorgon got Will” and “Eleven stopped it”, Will and Mike were staring at each other THE WHOLE TIME. THEY COULDN’T TAKE THEIR EYES OFF OF EACH OTHER!!

One thing that breaks my heart even more about the cliff scene is that when Mike looks down, we can see the rocks below him. He knows he isn’t going to hit the water. He is going to hit the rocks. I know we know that hitting the water from that height would still be almost certain death but if you broke the surface tension you might survive, but hitting the rocks is even less likely to be survivable

I think when he was doing his monologue to help save El the “love at first sight” he talked about may have actually been about Will.
In season 2 he tells will that meeting him on the swing set was the best decision he ever made and it seems so much more genuine.
It seems more genuine because he was lying to El, the poor girl. Like, there's a whole season of evidence that proves be definitely didn't love her from the moment he met her or that he didn't know he loved her either 😅

I find Mike being bi more likely than him being gay. I don't think he is faking his feelings for El. However, I also think he does sense Will being into him and that confuses him. Maybe he is dealing with internalised homophobia, that's what it felt like when he didn't hug Will at the airport despite being able to hug other male characters.

Okay, this is kinda long. I’m a writer so I really enjoyed your analysis on this subject. The colors used for Mike’s clothes tells a lot If you read deeply into his emotions and how to connect to each scene you mentioned using the meanings of chakras. Hear me out… It seems Mike wears a lot of blue which ties into literally emotion and feelings. The lighter color of blue is connected to communication/throat chakra while the darker blue (close to indigo) is about the third eye/the other side/wisdom which is important with his determination to stay locked into Will being alive while everyone else (except Joyce) believes he is dead. Yellow is about will power, confidence, courage, warrior mentality. It is connected to the solar plexus which is like a small sun that is always burning/never giving up. Green is the heart chakra and it is obvious in its meaning; the character is always mixing emotions (blue) with his heart (green) and tying it with courage (yellow) as he struggles with his own identity (his new/unfamiliar feelings for El) and looking for Will (his familiar/old feelings for his best friend. Also Mike and Will are very creative; Will with his art work and Mike’s great Imagination as dungeon master in D&D. It would be cool to think one day Mike and Will creating a comic together. Great video! Sorry I went and on and on but as a writer I enjoy going down the rabbit hole to get a closer look into other writer’s minds. Thank you!

You are most welcome! It is very interesting how script writers use so many different elements to create a scene or a character. Especially when it’s in relation to the scene itself. Red in the chakras is connected to your root chakra which is being grounded and feeling safe…it your power base. White and black are not connected to the chakras, but the colors in spirituality link to purity and innocence. Black leans more towards protection and also grounding. A lot of people are unaware how much spirituality and chakras are tied into writing scenes for movies and television. That also goes into colors that are used in sets and scenes. It’s so fascinating and it also helps to strengthen you as a writer. You also mentioned music… That is very important when you use it in a scene! As we all know the Duffer brothers never miss a chance to use clues and little Easter eggs throughout their show. PS - i’m sorry I just read that you said blue… Not black… Blue is emotion like I said but has different variance in the depth of color. Darker blues are connected to the third eye which is the other side like I said but almost like a psychic awareness and emotion which is connected to the heart which is green. Light blue connects to the throat chakra which is clear communication. It’s funny when Mike confronts Troy he is wearing dark blue and light blue. he seems to at that time has the courage to confront Troy using his voice even though he knows he’s probably going to get his butt kicked. He doesn’t care.

INTRESTING-
I’ve always adored the intentionality behind the colors in this show: particularly the primary colors with the navy blues and brick reds and mustard yellows to really hammer in the 80s but also to ascribe meaning to each hue. I’ve also always and solely payed attention to those three primaries, but I was so excited every time you brought up green!! I only noticed green things since s3 as the season was so full of color. And from the way Dustin often wears green, Jancy wears navy green in s2 when they go on their mission to expose the lab, and Mike and Lucas wear green when biking out in the to rain to apologize to Will, to name a few moments, all these instances to me show unity. And this video made me realize how much Mike wore green in s1, really highlighting how he drew that line to Will and strove to reunite the Party.

Damn. I really do believe Mike is gay and the way they put in all these little hints throughout the show is a perfect way for them to say “It’s always been there, right from the start”. Just like with Will. And they’re doing an insanely good job because there’re so few people who actually believes Mike is gay. If you say something like this in the FB Fangroups you’ll be banned and reported, like it’s crazy!
I didnt see it until these videos (I noticed Will because it was obvious in season 4). I used to ship lots of couples in past tvshows, gay couples, but none of them were canon in the end, even when there were hints and insinuations (which ended up being just queerbaiting),, so I got tired and I started giving for granted the heteronormativity. I did that even when I watched Our Flag Means Death, but it was so obvious later in the eps that I couldnt not see it, but with other shows, it has been surprise after surprise, and I am so glad tv is changing in that sense. I just got too early to watch tvshows, and in the beggining of millenia it was all so straight! But now it's changing and I can quite assume it yet. I am always waiting for disappointment.

I didn’t understand the Byler thing at first cause I only could see Mileven but that changed last season and looking back I see a lot more signs now. I do think Mike likes El but he’s not in love with her and his feeling for Will and Wills feeling for him are coming too the surface so he’s grappling with that in the latest season. I definitely think he could like Will back.
I think the colors are what sells this for me.

Another reason I feel like he was telling the truth here, is that we've seem him lie before, and he acts much differently.
For example, when explaining to El why he couldn't hang out in season 3, he seems much more nervous and on edge. And in season 4, when they argue because he never tells her he loves her, he's much more defense. His love confession in season 4 seems more like a lie than this scene tbh

I know this is from a year ago, but I wanted to add that your video is the one that made me realize that, while Mike believes Will to be somehow alive when he jumps from the quarry ledge, he also hasn't yet learned that the body he saw being pulled from the quarry was a fake. From his point of view, leaping into the quarry might have represented a conceivable method of joining Will in the Vale of Shadows, while also helping to save Dustin.

I've always been a byler, I'm convinced Mike has always loved Will *that way* but I do think Mike did like El, or at least he thought he liked her, but he was just a preteen, and he might be autistic as well. But with time things got even more complicated and he got used to being with her, and he just accepted that he was in a relationship that didn't bring him and her any joy. That's so sad.

The way you described the snowball and Mike’s intent with asking out El reminded me of a common experience between queer women: picking a boy that you tolerate and saying you have a crush on him just to seem more “normal” or to fit in with your friends at sleepovers. This didn’t personally happen to me, but I’ve heard a lot of other sapphics talk about this, and it’s funny how Mike’s behavior could potentially parallel this. ie, taking El to the snowball just because he knows he should, instead of out of a genuine like for her.

Also things in the backround being blue and yellow (like the lights in the roller rink in S4).
You also mentioned the triangles on wills gown, fun fact triangles are supposedly meant to represent the lgbtqia community. We see triangles on many characters clothing such as mike (more in S4) but also with robin who is canonically a lesbian.
I just watched stranger things in just two days, due to my lack of meds and adhd. I started by going down a rabbit hole of Steve being the mom friend and wanted to fully see his journey. I just went through and rewatched s1 recently and something interesting I noticed is, in my opinion, the only 2 times we explicitly see Mike doing anything to indicate he likes El romantically is directly after someone else TELLS him that (they think) he has a crush on El.
The first time is after Lucas mentions that Mike is obsessed with El by stating that "Mike loves her so much, lets get married". Mike brushes it off but in the next scene with El when they are walking on the tracks they have a little heart to heart and Mike gives her a look that could indicate he DOES have feelings for her. Almost like it wasnt something he thought about until the idea was introduced to him.
The other scene is after the talk with Nancy, when she asks him if he likes El. I never noticed the blatant difference in the way the two express their denial until watching your video and it blows my mind how vastly different it is. Im now inclined to believe that he was most likely being genuine that he really didnt like El. Of course the romantic indicator afterwards is the fact that Mike kisses El after asking her to the Snow Ball. While I agree with your interpretation of how Mike could potentially be feeling, I also feel like it could also be " People keep saying this is how I feel, so I must feel that way."
Something important to note too is just how young they are in s1. I believe they are meant to be like 11/12. So its very real that this is meant to be their first experiences with crushes and that Mike genuinely doesnt know what it feels like to have a crush on someone. As someone who was a young closeted queer kid growing up in a small Midwestern town, I definitely dealt with a lot of internalized homophobia. A lot of my early straight "crushes" were just projections of what I THOUGHT I was supposed to be feeling based on what the other "normal" kids around me were saying. And while I don't deny that Mike does genuinely care about El, I feel like he may he confusing platonic with romantic feelings.
Its been established that Mike up until this point has had little to no positive interaction with a girl that he isn't related to. It is also established, by MIKE, in s4 that he views his relationship with Will differently than that of the rest of the party. Since finding Will is Mikes main focus is s1, its easy to assume that his feelings, platonic or romantic, for Will are at the forefront of his mind throughout the season. Mike knows that the feelings, platonic or romantic, that he has for El in s1 is different from his feelings for Will and any other girl he has previously interacted with before. It would be easy to assume, based on the fact that they are so young and they don't know any different, that he could be interpreting his feelings into meaning he has a crush on El. Something I think that gets overlooked however, is that how Mike interacts with El is very similar to how he interacts with Lucas and Dustin, and that he spends the season trying to integrate her into becoming a member of their party. Like I mentioned previously, the only times where we see him act differently are when its presented to him that those feelings he has are romantic.
Don't get me wrong, he could genuinely just be experiencing his first crush on El, but it is so interesting to think about. Especially with all the other subtle queer-coding moments we have for Mike in s1.

22:34 man it’s funny how your memory can mess with you ‘cause before you played this clip, I (ex Mileven, now Byler shipper for a few months now) could’ve sworn Mike was just as shifty about his denial as Nancy. Like I thought I remembered him breaking eye contact and getting fidgety and his voice stuttering. But wow, he’s actually so earnest in his delivery?? And now we have the benefit of the other seasons to show us how much of a stuttering mess he gets when he’s lying (Mileven fight scene in s4) and how little he stutters and how earnest he sounds when being honest (“That’s just not true!” from the Rink o’ Mania fight). In this case, he sounds way more like the latter than the former.
In fact, when Mike lies, he breaks eye contact and turns his head away just like Nancy does here.
And they do a good job tricking the viewer because Nancy’s lie primes us to expect that Mike is also gonna lie. Mike reacts to Nancy’s denial with an accepting nod, so he thinks she’s being honest. It’s we the audience who know she’s lying because of dramatic irony.
The depth from the writing & acting is honestly so amazing😭😭
in the police station scene, joyce shows concern about will having disappeared because some kids were bullying him for being queer, like "they might have done something to my son", ted's speech at the table right after nancy leaves, It could be a clear implicit homophobic speech from him saying that mike, because he is also queer, could suffer the same as will!!
other thing i want to point is:
is that in season 4, lucas will try to become someone "normal" because he couldn't stand being bullied anymore, lucas' bullying was always related to him being black and nerdy, so in season 4 he wants to be popular and leaves the hellfire club to focus in basketball, I believe mike, who possibly has internalized homophobia, tried to do the same in season 1! will's bullying was always offensive and mainly related to his sexuality, ted's comments about mike show that just like will's father, mike's father himself was implicitly homophobic towards mike!! to change that, just like lucas did in season 4, mike believed he was in love with el, he was impressed with her so I believe he thought it wouldn't be difficult to "love" her

The part that Eleven wearing a yellow suit in the woods when mike was trying to find will is kind of like really Mike trying to find will inside el and so that is why Mike is still dating el and like trying to hide his true feelings for Will by using El. it's like hiding his true identity from everyone with using El.
dude honestly if this is queerbait i will probably end up crying 😭😭😭 in s4 mike CONSTANTLY is staring at wills lips, and even in other seasons, mostly s3.
I dont know if that means anything though, it would have been best if will had another love interest because one ship isn't gonna sail so milevens or bylers are gonna be real mad by the end of season 5.

One thing I realized is that El mentioned Will’s painting to Mike in the Letter at the beginning. So, he was aware that Will was working on a painting that could possibly be for a girl he liked. Then will brought said painting to the airport with him. Mike asked about it, but then he avoids asking further after he’s told by Will that it’s the painting. He even seemed even more awkward after hearing that 🌞
Is that not because of what you said? He already knew about the painting from els letter? He maybe didn't feel the need to ask further, as he knew what it was

I never saw the hints, and I usually see hints where there arent lol like in sHERLOCK (Altough that was queerbaiting for me, pure evul sick queerbaiting). This is probably because they are kids and I didnt think they would code them as queer, since homophobia still exists, especially among the prolifes and stuff that always say the kids must be protected at all costs, even from sexual education, which I find really important so they detect perverts.

I am a Murray & Alexei shipper ig, so i have bias, but i feel like the duff brothers chose to kill Alexei to not have to elaborate on their relationship. Like how does the russian cop get to live out of the most deadliest situation but alexei dies at a carnival surrounded by people?
