  • In the southeastern part of Norway, on the western shore of Norway's largest lake, Mjøsa is a cozy Gjøvik town.
Our walk begins on its embankment. After all, the town of Gjøvik is the home port of the paddle steamer DS "Skibladner.
The passenger steamer with side paddle wheels was built in 1856 and now it is the oldest steamship in the world still in operation.
An interesting fact is that during its history, the ship sank twice: in 1937 and 1967. And after each rise, it was reconstructed. On June 14, 2005, the steamer was given the status of a historical monument. This was the first time that an operating object in Norway received this status.
In the summer the steamer sails along the route and makes sightseeing trips, and in the winter it rests under an elegantly constructed canopy of wooden structures and glass on the town embankment.
We continue our walk along the promenade along the lake on Mjøspromenaden. In the neighboring harbor, there are still many sailboats on the water, but by mid-October, the harbor is completely empty, as winter comes early to the town of Gjøvik, and lake Mjøsa is almost completely covered with ice.
In the center of the town, the turbulent Hunselva River (50.2 km) babbles and it is here that it flows into Lake Mjøsa. The river divides the town into the Nordbyen district on the north side and the Sørbyen district on the south.
The river also picturesquely skirts the very heart of the town. Gjøvik Gård is a farm that was first mentioned in documents in 1432. And it was around it that the town of Gjøvik subsequently arose. The manor is surrounded by a cozy and shady garden with beautiful flower beds and pleasant walking paths.
Then we go to the shore of the 200-meter outdoor Fastland pool. There is everything for a beach holiday here: changing rooms, showers, and even a diving board.
In general, this complex was built in 1934 in connection with the 75th anniversary of the town of Gjøvik. Previously, there was the main town skating rink here, since the ice on Lake Mjøsa was unstable and people came here for safer skating.
There is also a ski slope with lifts and several slopes on the shore of the pool. Yes ... a pool and a ski slope, as well as a skating rink in one place. This is only possible in Norway :)
Although it is not surprising, because the town of Gjøvik was one of the host cities during the Olympic Games in Lillehammer in 1994.
In autumn there is a special atmosphere here, a light haze over the lake, fresh but still warm air, and the first yellow in the tree crowns. It is pleasing to the eye that the fountains are still working, and the flower beds are full of bright flowers.
Having wandered around the town of Gjøvik and its streets, we finish our walk on the embankment, which is already shrouded in yellow pre-sunset light and looks completely different than during the day.
