very impressive work. and very entertaining 40mins clip. the blade looks stunningly beautiful. however, I wonder what a swordsman would say to it. its balance and how it feels in combat. curious though: would it break most of the opponent's blades used 1,000yrs ago?

  • @MithrosX

This reminds me of Anglachel / Gurthang, from Tolkien's "The Silmarillion".
It was forged by Eol, a dark elf, and then later re-forged. It was described to have a dark blade with edges that "shone with pale fire". Which reminds me of the copper used.
The story fits this sword almost perfectly. Just thought it was a neat coincidence.

This is by far one of the best copper Damascus steel builds from what I have seen online. Hope you can make a full-size sword like this soon. It might be a challenge. If possible try using a copper-nickel alloy between the copper and the 15N20 steel. It may stick better together since copper and nickel like to diffuse into each other.

I've been brainstorming some book ideas centering around "ranger characters" (they themselves won't all be elves). At the end of their training they will be presented with a blade of some sort. I know I didn't want it to be a sword, or even a short sword, but a big ass elven "bowie" hunting knife (as far as size, not so much the style of a traditional bowie knife) if that gives an idea of what I'm imagining. What was made here is damn close to what I was imagining.

It would be interesting to hear about how the copper affects the process as well as the final knife. I know nothing about metal working, so wonder whether the copper makes things harder to work with, or the final knife weaker or stronger than usual, or last longer than usual. Certainly it is very beautiful!

I love the way you "sandwich" the different strengths and hardnesses of material so that you can achieve an edge that's has desirable characteristics for sharpness and cutting abilities that will be possible to re-sharpen. And that will hold an edge. And cladding that gives it strength that would have a different more difficult type of edge if it was used in the core. Most would prefer this setup. an edge with softer steel that would not make a good blade if used overall. And hard cladding that makes it impossible to bend or break, that if used overall would make an edge that's very difficult to sharpen and even harder to keep sharp. This gives the hardness and strength of the cladding that does not compromise the softer steel used in the middle that makes an excellent cutting edge! It's like the "San-Mei" philosophy taken to an extreme level! Very VERY cool! It's beautiful but more importantly it's a real usable blade that will not bend or break and has an edge that can be made into a razor that will keep its edge, and be possible to sharpen using an ordinary whetstone. I love your work!
