I always paint my fence with Castrol GTX with Magnatec. The Magnatec adds a extra layer of protection and helps your fence last an extra 30,000 to 50,000 miles. It's expensive, but well worth it.

He’s spot on! Many blokes in the 1970s mixed old engine oil and creosote to treat fencing and old beams. They lasted for years without re coating every year. Example: I treated my decking beams and there still perfect even though my decking boards have rotted 👍👍👍

Great idea! The only downside is the black drips running down your neighbours side. It would be worth offering to do their side as well, which in any case would preserve the fence better. To me it's a very green thing to do. You are saving the disposal of the oil and saving the production of new creosote. Plus you can treat yourself to a few pints of internal creosote with the money you saved.....Guinness!

I am going to do mine with Used Motor Oil and Pine Tar. I may even lay some Pitch in on the very top and very bottom (Pine Tar and Horse Manure=Pitch) to give it an extra thick coating and help with bugs and water dispersal.

My idea was to get the cheapest 5l Engine oil i found, and paint the fence. By far the best wood preservative available for cheap. Get the decking oil as it might be the same oil with some colour in it for 2-3 times additional price. Also get a paint colour or stain like Ronseal, Cuprinol etc and you will see how dissapointed you will be when the paint will come off after 6 months. Best way for long runs is the oil. I am doing my deck and fence every 3-4 years and it looks like new even now after 9 years. Cheers

It is used car oil you get, when you do an oil change. It goes in light gold and comes out black.

I thought it came out quite nice. Just brushed it on. My pine pickets came out a golden brown. Some older pickets came out darker in color similar to this mans fence. 2 years later they hardly look aged.

Just so everybody knows, in the United States used motor oil is classified as a hazardous material. Motor oil contains metal detergents as well as fine metal shavings from engine wear. Sure, these metals are what keeps the bugs off the wood but they are toxic. I used a 50/50 mixture of diesel fuel and used motor oil on half my fence before I learned it was a hazardous material. Worst case scenario - if a neighbor found out and didn't like it and they reported it, it could cost you big - you would have to remove the fence as well as the soil and you would be fined. Probably won't happen....probably!
A legal alternative would be a 50/50 mixture of oderless mineral spirits and linseed oil. Maybe a little citric oil to keep bugs off, maybe a little melted wax as extra water repellent. Cost a little more but it is legal.
