I think I may get me one of these. Awesome fir most all small protects.
You’re a life saver man for posting this video. Deck sealer is over $60 a gallon now and I new there had to be a cheap way to stain wood and it look nice too thanks 👍
Thanks for watching
Fast forward to July 2024, probably over $100 now !
Stain cost so much, don't last, tell'ya.
My late father applied used motor oil on his old barn years ago. Never seen it done again until I came across your video. Dad also used diesel fuel for weed control. Brought back memories...Nice work! DO NOT USE GAS!!!!!!
Awesome glad you like thanks for watching
Must be assigned to a truck company. “I was holding my breath!” Lol. Good video man. 👍🏻
Just stained my 8ft wooden privacy used 50/50 mix turned out great🙏🙏🙏
Awesome, glad it turned out great
Is it sticky?
How's it holding up
@@pearlperlitavenegas2023 still looks good when staining make sure the wood is dry wait aleast 2 months before applying to a new fence
Was there any smell after it dried?
That siding looks gorgeous! The power sprayer definitely gives a more even finish.
This is a real revelation. I didn't know you could control the darkness just with the amount of diesel.
Thanks for watching
Looks great, we recycle all of our truck oils, we used them for chainsaw bar oil, our fence and our gravel driveway.
Great idea! Thanks for watching
You use old diesel oil for chainsaw bar oil ??
@@devilblueduke. yes that works well
i just did my farm wagon i put saw mill poplar into ,my brother in law is a saw man/farmer he told me.we used straight old oil ,didn't thin it with diesel though ,i rolled it on. i need to recoat it again now,it has soaked in well.thank's good video.

I remember helping my uncle stain the sheds on his farm back when I was just a kid. I plan to do this to my shed in the Spring.
Thanks for leaving a comment hope your shed turns out great.
Best video yet on how this process works.
thanks again
I built and stained over a thousand rough sawn pine sheds. Would mix 4.5 gallons of diesel and add anywhere from 1/2 -1 cup of coal tar to make a light/medium/dark brown stain.
Applied with a "Good" pump sprayer (Hudson)- kind with an adjustable brass tip that was easy to clean- not the cheap , big box plastic adjust a nozzle type the poster tried- you could see the terrible spray pattern it generated. With a good sprayer, you can really dial it in and get quite detailed with it.
Nice work here -looked great!!
thanks for watching and thanks for the tips
Where did you get the coal tar?
@@captcutt22 My question also. "Discontinued" "Not available" (I'm so disgusted over what has happened to industry in this country)
Wow! I was today years old when my tree guy told me about this... it's absolutely amazing and looks awesome 😊 Thank you for sharing 😍

I used brand new 5w20 engine oil to stain some new unfinished VEPR rifle Wood Stocks as they were imported unfinished to the country before the ban as they were rushing them in. I finished them by sanding them down smoothly then used this for an oil stain and they turned out really nice...
Awesome thanks for watching
I used it on my open trailer, Love it. The wood ate it up turned out beautiful.
Thanks for watching glad it turned out good
I generate a lot of used synthetic based oils as a millwright, one of which is a 625 with an orange tinge after use. I take 5 gallons of the used 625 and add a quart of common dark walnut stain. It mixes well and cuts the viscosity of the 625 base to a nice, usable degree. This stuff works amazingly well as both a finish and a protectant. Great tips in your video as well! The shed looks fantastic.
Thanks for the nice comment, hope your having a good summer
Which brand of stain?
@@pearlperlitavenegas2023 anything oil based.

Does the oil stain replace the diesel fuel for color?
Thanks for the video. Ive been using expensive varnishes on my teak gates over 7 years now, and have to redo every 6 months...that adds up to a lot of money....next time im redoing my gates ill use deisel and oil.
Thanks so much!!!

I absolutely love that style of shed. The open center is a great way to work outside yet be shaded and protected from the elements.

Awesome I did the out side of my house 5 yeas ago did not know people really did that. No body believe me I did my house with use motor oil because it looks so good it still does. Ill spray it on next time tks to the video
Awesome wish you could post pictures on these comments. Thanks for watching
Turned out very nice. Really like the black paint trim pieces around the doors, window and edges. The stain mix you did looks good. I’m looking to redo my fence soon and was starting to price out materials, I now think I’ll do a stain like this with old oil and diesel fuel on framing lumber vs pressure treated lumber. Thanks for your video, I found it to be very helpful and you did an awesome job.
Thanks for watching
Amazing information, thank you. I have been spending about £15 for 5 litre of stain that does not protect the wood. I have seen this diesel and oil mix waterproofing the wood so think the next application will be this. I have the wagner sprayer already and it takes less than an hour to do 60 foot length of my 6 foot tall fence. (previously took 2-3 days with a brush!)
That Wagner power sprayer works awesome. Thanks for watching
I am going to try and use it on old teak furniture... Going with the paintbrush route first. The wood is really dry, so will try this before another repair. Thanks!
Welcome thanks for watching
My brother built a log house in 1978 in north Alabama. After all the logs were up and all the interior wood walls were in place he stained the entire house inside and out with diesel, burnt motor oil and a small amount of tar for a deeper color. He used an old spray machine my Dad used in the earlier years of peach farming. In 1978 log homes were gaining popularity out west but not in our area. There was only building supply stores that may or may not have carried what was needed for something the size of a house. There wasn’t big box stores with a dozen brands of wood preservers and stains. He used what the old timers had used.
Awesome story thanks for sharing. Thanks for watching
How did it hold up? How does it look now?
Beautiful! use motor oil as a stain inside and outside without adding anything to it. The best part is the clean up. I keep the brushes/rollers wrapped in plastic and reuse them over and over. They never dry out and all are always ready to go! The smell goes away in less than week, usually a day or two. Recently stained an entire inside staircase (treads and risers) and the smell was unnoticeable in 2 days unless you bend down and take a big whiff. The sprayer works too but it always seems to be windy and overspray becomes a problem so I prefer to just slap it on. It’s slower than spraying but I get a lot less on me and everything else. The color outside seems to only last about a year depending on the type of wood, it’s finish (rough or smooth) and the amount of direct sunlight it receives. But I have used oil by the bucketful as a result of vehicle and equipment maintenance so it literally costs me nothing except the time to apply/reapply. And a little goes a long way! I encourage everyone to stay away from the death in a can stuff from the store and go with something safer, cleaner, far cheaper, and just plain better.
wow really nice comment. hope others see this thank you for sharing
I just upvoted it :) @@DIYJIM

I been looking for something like this , as stains to expensive , the color turned out nice, ty showing doesn’t catch on fire

Fantastic tip and it looks great! Ok two questions an I will look at comments but how does it smell and why catch bees? As a suggestion you can build little bee nests for them by drilling holes in a piece of wood and nailing to a tree or hanging. They are pollinators. Save the bees. Thank you for your video.
Thanks for watching the smell goes away fast and I agree about bees but they make my wood into Swiss cheese.
Started using just used oil and a brush, since I don't have a need for diesel, so I tried to avoid it...just bought diesel tonight, so I can spray areas that are hard to get a brush in. Using a garden sprayer, bc it's not a big job for my needs. So far I love how my umbrella stand table I made turned out! After 24 hours, no smell, gorgeous color, and no residue when touched.
Awesome wish I could get pictures on here glad it worked out for ya
mineral spirits also works as a solvent for the oil, but it's more expensive than diesel.
Pretty cool man 👍🏻you kinda missed the corner on the left side there when you were using the Wagner. Its making my O.C.D go crazy, please tell me you went back and hit that spot again!!!
Cool video buddy thanks!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Yep I went back it all was covered thanks for watching.

Ok Im so going to try this. My deck needs stained and I have tons of old oil and I dont feel like spending $150 or more on deck stain.
I never used it on something I would walk on. If you do this let me know how it turns out and how long it takes until you can walk on it. People have asked if you can do this and I usually say I do not recommend it.
with a pump sprayer I put a tire valve on my sprayer and use a compressor up to 30 psi and no problem and fast
That’s an awesome idea.
I have used this many times. and the odor does eventually go away. 👍 👍
It works great I'm sure you agree. Thanks for watching
How long did it take for the smell to go away? I want to put it on my pergola and lay my grapes on top.
Great video thank you tons, I was saving my car oil for a filtered oil furnace I've been planning, but this is great, my neighbor mentioned this but you really helped with the details
Glad I could help
Brilliant. I especially love the fire department T-shirt.
Thanks and thanks for watching
There are hand held pump sprayers available, usually used for gardening or indoor plants. In my experience, you can get them up to a higher nozzle pressure than those larger types like in the video. The extra pressure would likely help disperse the oil into a finer mist.
As an added bonus, at least where I live, you can get them at a dollarama for four bucks (Canadian "dollar" store).
Thanks for sharing have a good summer
Thanks, i watched a few other videos on using Diesel fuel and oil to preserve wood, but yours was the first to explain how much of each to use. I want to use it on wood for building garden boxes.
Thanks for watching glad you like my video
I hope those garden boxes won't be used for growing vegetables... A shed is a little different than a garden... The oil will leach into the soil and those plants will contain unsafe levels of heavy metals & carcinogens.

a tip is to mix the used oil and diesel together first, and then filter....goes through faster.

Great Video! I was about to buy stain sealer combo for $45 a gallon which would come out to $2,000 for my fence. I was like....now way a farmer would do that and I started searching for a farmer recipe which is the 50/50 diesel and used motor oil. I added an extra ingredient that you might consider. Borax and Boric Acid. These are the key ingredients in Tim bor and Boracare and also very cheap. These will keep the wood boring insects (termites included) away along with wood rot pathogens and mold. You won't need those carpenter bee traps anymore. I am getting ready to run my first batch today. I can't wait to do a cost analysis at the end. I'm glad you did the match demonstration too. My wife was worried about the flammability aspect. I explained that linseed oil in store bought stains is way more volatile and stain rags will spontaneously combust. Thanks again for the video.
Awesome you have to comment back how it all turns out.
How much borax do you use per gallon?
So, how did your project turn out?

Hi, I just built a pergola in the backyard and I want to stain it with that 50/50 mixture and I'm wondering, since I have to lay my grape Vines on the wood, does the smell of oil eventually go away?

I just finished my back deck with this method. Works great, stinks for about a week. A good respirator is strongly advisable if you using a Wagoner power sprayer. Power sprayers atomize whatever they spray and even though you don't think it is going to get into your lungs it does. Blow your nose after you spray and look at what color it is. I know from experience, l sprayed kitchen cabinets for 2 years everyday. When we first started we didn't have respirators just those masks that everyone thinks is protecting them from covid! USE A RESPIRATOR! Oh ,and by the way I ended up in the hospital for 8 days this year with a double lung infection, coughing up blood for a week. Not saying that it was from inhaling paint and finish fumes but it probably didn't help matters!
thanks for the advice and thanks for watching
Gary how did it fair over time? Do you have any problems with it getting on shoes or clothes? Debating on doing it on the top boards and railings. I dont want to regret it when friends lean on it, and will be putting a pool up to it so dont want issues with barefeet.
Yeah I love my $40 full face respirator from amazon, super useful for my indoor farm, cleaning the chicken barn and a variety of power tools benefit your lungs with the respirator :)
I guess this falls under Bigoil, that will be the next commercial fer the abalance chasers! 🤫
I really like this idea, and am going to get rid of some old kerosene and motor oil for my outdoor furniture and fence. Thanks. I have a pump sprayer so will go that route. No worse then the other chemicals you have to buy from the store to stain with. Atleast oil came from the earth instead of those man made chemicals
Awesome .. would try this for wood that is out there in the weather most of the time
Thanks
Man that’s an Awesome Job Thanks for the Lesson
You bet, Thanks for watching
The issue of used motor oil vs. new motor oil is: 1. Used will give you a darker finish, and 2. Used my clog your spray nozzel. It's important to note that this spray will go everywhere, so be prepared to kill some nearby plants, stain nearby structures and make a mess. Personally, I roll my fence with used motor oil. Get the thickest nap roller you can find and a mini roller. Cut the roller cover down with a hacksaw and place it on the mini roller. EDIT: I mixed the oil in a 50/50 mix in the bottom of a five gallon bucket. Put the roller pan in a carboard box to reduce drips on your lawn and garden. It also keeps you from stepping in it and filling your sneaker with kero and motor oil like I did. Roll the fence, then come back with a brush and finish the tight spots. Yes, spraying is a quicker application but a much longer clean up. It's also a lot more messy and you don't get the ability to really load down the roller and soak the top and base of each post where you really need a lot of oil. Another advantage of rolling is you can call it quits and just cover your gear without any clean up. This is important for big jobs.
Thanks for the info this might help others.
I dont know too many people who would buy oil and use it new on staining wood.. the whole point of using the oil is to give it asecond life, save money and not have to haul it to the recycling place.. unless u got a oil heater..
Do you pressure wash the fence first?
@@btdayoungsta2702 It's your call. If you want it to look like a new wood finish, you have to power wash it. Personally, I'd power wash it if it had algae or lichen growing on it, otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
Wrong about killing plants. Where's your evidence? I've poured oil on my lawn and nothing happened. Your so full of it.
Thats a real nice colorI I'm am definitely going to do this!
Hope it turns out great
Sort of a dumb question but did the Wagner sprayer clean up well enough to use for other purposes? I never used a paint sprayer so just want to make sure this is not a one time use thing. Plastic containers tend to permanently absorb oil based liquids so my thought is I need to purchase an additional sprayer container for water based sprays. Just want your thoughts because I always seem to learn the hard way in life and my hind sight is clearer than my foresight. Thanks in advance.
It cleans up good with just hot soapy water.
I needed a small batch to stain and protect some wood RV and pass thru gates in my block fence so I used a small amount of used oil and some mineral spirits so I wouldn't have the diesel stink.
thanks for the idea and comment

Thank you for this video, if you have time - a few questions:
Does this actually work well as a sealer, how often have you had to recoat?
I just washed off my privacy fence (250' long, 6' high) and am about to apply a brightener before staining/sealing.
Was looking up products for the latter and came across this...could this be a viable alternative to using ready seal,TWP, etc?

It won't light in a container but it is an accelerant if the shed ever catches fire. Used motor oil and diesel is exactly what we use to burn brush piles. Although I imagine most of the diesel evaporates off.
