I love my scan lines are connected my Pandora box 5 to my CRT just so I can get them. Loved arcades in the '80s and 90s. What a great channel this is I learned so much.
Love your tutorials! Would you be willing to make a video about adding custom overlay/bezels to retroarch? I can't seem to find a comprehensive guide anywhere and have tried everything I know to get them to show up. Many thanks for everything you do!
I found that 2XscaleHQ works great on the 8bit, 16bit, Neo-Geo, and MAME 2D type games. Also important to note that some of those shaders will drop frames or at least they do on my pie; 2XscaleHQ being the exception. Thanks for your videos and tutorials ETA Prime that have come in very handy.
Nice tutorial. I am a fan of scanlines, but wasn't always. It's not always easy to find a scanline effect that looks good. I had to make my own overlay in Retroarch to have it look good to me. Once I saw some good scanline effects, I was sold on it and I do think it makes the old 240p games look their best. They were designed to be seen with scanlines and it smooths the edges just a bit. I do like the look you achieved here. The scanlines are a good size and spacing. I'm not a big fan of curve effects, but it's not too pronounced here. Really looks very nice.
Just got raspberry pi 3 several of them within the few weeks and your videos help me understand better also playing with them to really looking how to enable triple buffering for snes also can’t find out how to add shaders not in the retro arch menu unless they are from sources I haven’t touched that at all...
I like this shader too with Arcade titles. I really love my overlays also instead of the black bars on the side. I only have about 250 overlays for almost 3000 titles for arcade, but it's a start and things like donkey Kong look so authentic.
This is a great explanation and demo STILL in 2022! There are quite a bit more shaders available at least for the script I pulled using Xubuntu on an old x86 machine but my favorite was right there out of the box that I use for snes9x - Royale S-Video.
fakelottes for Arcade screens, and crt-fake-geom for TVs. Very good for 2d games SNES and below, but tough to find good shaders that work well with 3D games on PS1 on pi/lower powered devices.
Excellent tutorials man, thanks. Can I ask you to make one, or link the one you've made, that shows what all the ROM folders are for? Some make no sense to me. Subscribed!
Awesome video! really appreciate all the videos you make and have learned so much... Is there any chance you could make a video(or point me to a step-by-step) on how to configure controls on non-liberto emulators... having a real difficult time setting up my ps3 controller over Bluetooth to work for my AdvanceMAME ROMs. tried reading the retropie wiki and searching the forums but I'm lost. thanks!
enjoy all your videos. just recently set up a raspberry pi 3 using your videos. Is there an alternative to this scanlines shader? I like scanlines, but I usually don't go as heavy on them
Great video as always. Can you do a tutorial on overlays for bezels? It would be nice to be able to fill in the areas around the game screen with original arcade art. Thx.
After I play a PlayStation or SNES game it changes the settings back to what it was before I changed it. Also it works for Sega Games, but after I change the aspect ratio it changes back after playing 1 game.
Another great video ETA! Thank you. I've found your videos of much help setting up a PI of my own. I have a question, perhaps you can help. I downloaded the latest Pi software from the PO site and I've began the set up process. I followed this tutorial using the option to make the changes to ALL EMULATORS. All of my console emulation seems to have the filters displaying as they do in your video. However MAME (while included in the list) is not displaying the scanlines. Any advice ? Tip ? Trick ? Thank you
I followed your tutorial over a year ago on my first set up and it worked amazingly. Tried it again on my second and it doesn't seem to work, any idea why? I followed your directions too 😔
Hey dude, I'm still having issues with save states and Retropie. I'm using Retropie 4.1 and a wired Xbox 360 controller. I followed the tutorial on save states you made earlier but it still won't work! Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Hi, some games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs look great to me in 16:9. But I want to change aspect settings to one specific game to 4:3 in arcade like Contra and Congo Bongo but maintain 16:9 for all other games. How do I do this for one specific game? Thanks ETA P
Your videos are so helpful. Having fun configuring my Pi with Retropie. Quick question, I have seen others vids where they have their games running full screen (I have black bars on both sides of my TV). To achieve that , would I need to mess with the Aspect ratio? Or is there a more Linux based solution?
Interesting... Having worked with MAME for a long time, I know that it automatically compensates for the orientation of the monitor based on the game, i.e. If you play Galaga with scanlines, for example, the lines will appear vertically on the screen. I noticed that there were both horizontal and vertical filters. Is this not the case with the RetroPie emulators?
I find that shader you used causes some performance issues. Is there a way to add shaders that aren’t already installed? I had a curvature filter without scanlines that worked fine but it’s not installed on my image i’m creating.
Hey ETA - love your videos. However, for some reason, no matter WHAT I do, I cannot get rid of scanlines in PSX. I think I've tried everything but it's exactly the same every time I change settings... i.e. shaders. I ALWAYS get scanlines !!!!! what am I doing wrong ???
Hey ETA! thanks for the vid! I was wondering if you could help a newbie out. Most of my emulators are running fine, But My nintendo emulators, For some reason the screen is shifted over to the right. How do I get that centered?
There are shader that do it realistically, but the problem is they use way more processing power than the raspberry pi 3 can handle. The Pi 4 could maybe do it, but it’s best to use a PC for that especially if you want to have a screen curvature effect with it.
It's called Royale and like Logan Palmer said, it may take more horsepower than a power sipping ARM processor can handle. Old i3/i5 Optiplex machines in mini form factors are like 60 bucks on fleabay or just go to local MSP outfits and look in their recycle pile ;)
I went back and did this cause I decided to try this game called marvelous - mouhitotsu no takarajima that is by the director of Zelda Ocarina of time. The game without the scanlines looks weird but the scan lines really make the game look better.
Prime, I have seen on Mortal Kombat 2 that it has no shadows on raseberry pi but mortal kombat 3 has shadows???? Is there anyway u can turn shadows on? I am using the wolfanoz image!
Tried this with gambatte for gameboy emulation and the Pi4b 8gb model couldn't handle it. A huge drop in performance after enabling the shader. If the performance is so bad with gameboy, what will it do with other systems ? Probably nothing good, I imagine...
When I use the CRT shader, it looks as if the video takes a small but significant framerate hit on my Pi 3. To clarify, it seems to jump between 30fps and 60 fps on a whim. Any suggestions?
ETA, there's a gamepad key combination you can press on the fly to cycle through these filters instantly. I'll do it again at home and report back with the combo.
Goose Goose yes, select + m/n for me as well. However, many people don't have a keyboard connected - so I'm trying to find the pre-bound controller buttons that are set by default. Thanks.
Looks like I was thinking about Recalbox. github.com/recalbox/recalbox-os/wiki/Shaders-configuration-(EN) The hot keys are built in for that functionality
Hi, Im relatively new with Retropie. I want to add overlays, and I've been search everywhere for a tutorial on them and can't find any help. I'm just looking to install basic console overlays. I have downloaded all the files, dropped them into opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch/overlay but can't seem to get the option to show up for overlays when i go into retroarch by hitting select x during a game. Any advise of reference to a tutorial on how to enable overlays would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Has anyone here run into problems with getting the CRT shader on their Retropie to work for the Mortal Kombat and NBA Jams games? For some reason the shader works for all games, except the MK and NBA Jam games. Any help would be greatly appreciated it!
I use a 21 inch screen and stretch all the screens to fit , I use a combination of GLS barrel shader and MAME cools , it works pretty good for all machines apart from sega 32 x , that looks like arse , but everything else from FBA or MAME to PlayStation looks great, it gives all the machines the same crt barrel effect so they look like they are playing on a tv and adds scan lines to blur the pixels so they look like they should, I can deal with the stretching , it doesn't bother me that they are in the wrong aspect ratio, to me I want my pi arcade machine to be seamless when people have a play on it, to make pacman suddenly change to skinny screen after playing nes or sega is not nice to look at, I know the difference between the aspect ratios for the games, and I know some people find it incredibly important to play these in the correct aspect ratio, myself , I'm all about seamless transitions between the different machines , they should all fill the screen, most people have no idea what these old games are supposed to look like any way.
Wondering if someone could help me out. When I add this scan line effect it looks great but the games play is very jittery along with frame rate making it unplayable. I have a pi3 with just retropie and all the stock settings? Are you guys overclocking yours? Maybe that's the trick?
east99thst hey man, yeah had the same problem.. you have to change your resolution.. mine was stuck at 1920x1080 @ 50hz.. you gotta change that to one with 60hz! 720p @ 60hz works fine.. if you want 1080p you'll need to overclock i think.. your comment is quite old now so i wonder if you maybe discovered this already? ;)
Jonathan Beattie -I think it was my resolution that was making the crt-pi shader look funky. I cranked up the resolution to 1080p and damn it looks crisp now😀. One quick question . What shader do you use for vertical shooters? I tried using the crt-pi vertical and crt-pi but it does not look too good. Thanks for your time

You've saved me a ton of time with my RetroPie! Amazing videos and easy to follow along.

Awesome... got an img that was all smoothed out and looked really weird. Added the scanlines and now looks like what an arcade game should.
Another quality video.
Thank you!
You're awesome for these videos. Greatly appreciated you are sir!
I like this shader too with Arcade titles. I really love my overlays also instead of the black bars on the side. I only have about 250 overlays for almost 3000 titles for arcade, but it's a start and things like donkey Kong look so authentic.
my god...the nostalgia is strong with this one....did this on master system and looks insane lol. Back to the 80s ;)
Just got my cab today, I can finally practice what ETA Prime preaches...!
This is a great explanation and demo STILL in 2022! There are quite a bit more shaders available at least for the script I pulled using Xubuntu on an old x86 machine but my favorite was right there out of the box that I use for snes9x - Royale S-Video.
This is awesome. Can't wait to try it out. I'm interested in seeing what the gameboy filter looks like.
Thanks for this dude!! I was exactly looking for this!
Efrain Morales No problem. Thanks for watching!
I tried it out with mine and I can’t see a change at all. Is there anything you need to do to get it set up? Restart the pi?
i have the same problem, no scanline effect, all watercolor efect ¿any help? thanks
Are we still getting the 64 gig image that was mentioned when you released the 32 gig video? :)
Hey ETA Prime, does adding the scanlines shader impact MAME performance?
Wao snubbed. Thanks ETA
This is the only video I need! Thank u, friend.
Samuel L's PJs -hi, did this shader work for you? When I apply it I don’t see the scan lines. It looks like crt without the scan lines 😫
fakelottes for Arcade screens, and crt-fake-geom for TVs. Very good for 2d games SNES and below, but tough to find good shaders that work well with 3D games on PS1 on pi/lower powered devices.

working on it now.
ETA PRIME that would be awesome!
Thnx For These tips Bro !!! Think dumb UP!

Good job, thanks for your videos.
Thank you for this tutorial!

Hi, some games like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs look great to me in 16:9. But I want to change aspect settings to one specific game to 4:3 in arcade like Contra and Congo Bongo but maintain 16:9 for all other games. How do I do this for one specific game?
Thanks ETA P
for saving individual game settings (contra, congo bongo, etc.) in retroarch go to quick menu>overrides>save game overrides

Taemoata Fong in this video there is an aspect ration setting , try changing it to 16.9
im a fan of this shader too. its just a tad too dark though.
Very helpful video.Thank yoy
Thank you!!It's really useful to me.
can you do this on a per game basis? (I got some shmups in my fba list along with regular horizontal games)
Edit: Found it!
Thanks for the help!
Awesome tutorial. Btw how did you get the arcades to display on your sample pic screenshots?
Peter Van Staden ruclips.net/video/RGY6HQxXSME/видео.html
Thanks a lot
Thnx bro you helped me out with this :) perfect

seeing this after 3 years, I hope they add color bleed/color banding effects, as well as a fader going from composite~RGB

Hi. what is the first shader from 0:00-0:27 ? It looks really nice and has no performance issues.
during that time he isn't using any shaders
I know this is an old video, but look at the bezel project for background art for wide screen tvs
I love the shaders, but how do I do them for individual games, I would like to ad the bezels for each game in MAMA also??
Does this interfere with the bezel project bezels?
thank you u rock sir
Prime, I have seen on Mortal Kombat 2 that it has no shadows on raseberry pi but mortal kombat 3 has shadows???? Is there anyway u can turn shadows on? I am using the wolfanoz image!
thank you for the advice. unfortunately I had to slow the video speed down to .75x to understand how to do this
I think video smoothing is only perfect for Genesis, Master System, PS1, and Saturn (Pi4 only), because of the dithering...
Tried this with gambatte for gameboy emulation and the Pi4b 8gb model couldn't handle it. A huge drop in performance after enabling the shader. If the performance is so bad with gameboy, what will it do with other systems ? Probably nothing good, I imagine...
you re the best!

Matt B awesome I remember seeing this somewhere. Let me know and I'll make an update video
+ETA PRIME hold down hotkey, (select for me) and cycle through using m & n
Goose Goose yes, select + m/n for me as well. However, many people don't have a keyboard connected - so I'm trying to find the pre-bound controller buttons that are set by default.
Thanks.
why is there no shadera for the daphne? Arcade laser games ran on crt tv ... a shader of that type would be perfect to apply to the emulator
so this is pretty much not doable on a pi zero right? tried it but there were no options to set the screen curveture.
On lakka they have lots of usefull shaders, xbr wifh fxaa for an example, how do i insert these in here?
I noticed you have Neogeo scrapers I have drapes for nes snes ...and genesis but I was unable to get any for neogeo
I used the universal XML scraper
Thanks... I guess I need to give it another try
I have tried and tried, followed this video to the letter and still cannot get the scanlines to show?
Does the curvature-when I use this shader the scanlines don’t look even 🤨
Get sega rally 2 to run on a mame emulator on retropie Pi3. Thanks if you can do a demo and howto if its possible.
Looks like I was thinking about Recalbox. github.com/recalbox/recalbox-os/wiki/Shaders-configuration-(EN)
The hot keys are built in for that functionality
Anyway to set custom scanlines?

Thanks,
BTW i really appreciate your videos, they are what have helped me learn everything i know about Retropie to date. Thanks,
Doesn't apply for some reason. I selected all the right options... no change. Maybe because I'm using a pi 4. Don't know.
If u do configure all libretto it won’t work . U have to configure each one
I dont have anything in the Video Shader File (unset)
Anyone know how to add NTSC shaders? My screen turns pink when I try to add them?
Has anyone here run into problems with getting the CRT shader on their Retropie to work for the Mortal Kombat and NBA Jams games? For some reason the shader works for all games, except the MK and NBA Jam games. Any help would be greatly appreciated it!
I am looking for Sabr 3.0. Anyone have any luck adding this shader to a raspberry pie?
can you do scanlines w/o the curves?
yes, you pick the other shader option there
How to remove crt scan lines on retro pi3
i have Pi1 does not working for me
Zfast crt?
What a hassle just to change the shaders. And those "shader files" aren't listed.
Doesn’t work for me

MrRockfish01 show me an image and I'll tell you if it looks correct or not

What shader do you use for vertical shooters? I tried using the crt-pi vertical and crt-pi but it does not look too good. Thanks for your time
I must be BLIND...because I cant notice any improvement/difference
Or you could just play your RetroPie on a tube TV like a boss.
segaprophet yes sir, I just got one a few weeks ago , free on Craigslist.
You get yourself a PVM? :)
Raspberry scanlines quality, are very disappointing.
Awesome! I recently got a Raspberry Pi 3 and your videos have helped me a lot. Thank you!
Thank you!
How do you get even scanlines on 1080p? Are you using integer scaling?
Thanks !!!
