The forecast had called for 25-30kt winds out of the NE overnight but instead, we got 40kts gusting to 50kts out of the NW. This caused an unexpected storm surge that caught a lot of boat owners off guard, causing boats to float off lifts, drag anchors, and break dock lines. This was the first of 4 jobs I dealt with on this not-so-beautiful day that started at 8:30am and lasted until 9pm

    Nice work Cap, that was along day for you helping people. That is kind of cold for Florida. Here in Vancouver BC Canada on the Westcoast we have a very mild climate compared to the middle and eastern areas of Canada and the US. Its 55 here today, and going golfing later. The perception often is very different than reality. Canada is a huge country geographically, but small population. We have very diverse weather climates so very happy to be living on here...

      Thanks Vancity! Yeah, when I think of Canada in the winter, I think of bitter cold ❄
      It's definitely been a colder and gloomier than normal winter here in what used to be sunny Florida 😑

      I know I know. There's a lot of you that can only dream of this weather right now, but for us in Florida, it's cold 😩
      I'm from the north east, so I know what real winter is like, but I've been down here long enough now that I've gotten accustomed to the warmer weather!

    Just curious if you where a small boat coxswain in the Coast Guard? I don't see many tow boats using side tow.

    • @CaptKenO
      @CaptKenO  7 месяцев назад +1

      I was not. Most twin screw towboats will put a boat on the hip like I did when going into a dock/slip so they have better control. If you look at some of my older videos from when I worked in Venice, I never did since that boat wouldn't have had any control on a hip

    is there an actual skippers test ( driving test) for leisure boaters in the US ?

    • @CaptKenO
      @CaptKenO  7 месяцев назад

      Required practical? No. Most states do now require anyone born after a certain year (I think Florida is 1988 but don't quote me) to pass a written test... But it's open book, so mostly pointless...but at least it's a step in the right direction

      Good question Eric! It's quite a long story to type out, but it's been asked a few times, so I'm planning on making a video about that and how to become a towboat captain sometime later this spring
