Hi Ruan, love your dress, the fabric is terrific. Now I must give you a laugh 😂 When you mentioned you were going to use a sharpie on your dress it brought back memories. Many years ago when women wore hats to church my mother had a favourite mauve / purple straw hat. It got sun bleached!!!! What did she do. She coloured it in with a testa. Unfortunately one day there was a shower of rain when on her way home from church and she finished up with purple hair and purple streaks down her face. We never let her forget it. Just thought you’d enjoy the laugh. Happy sewing 🧵🪡🇦🇺
Thankyou for doing the Collab with Stacey j, I'm her proud mum, who insidently loves chocolate brown and can't quite get to gribs with red and pink together if you remember awhile ago at Racheal fabric clearance, if only I was in the UK. Back to the Collab, your dress looks amazing, and hopefully many hours of wearing. I know Stacey isn't happy with hers, not her style, maybe I will inherit it 😅 sewn beautiful as per usual of her makes, but we do have this happen to us from Time to time. Thankyou for taking part with us down under, once again a really proud mum 🎉❤🎉❤
Massive fan of Style Arc patterns. Don't forget, if you buy one you get to choose a pattern of the month for free! I've never had a problem with lack of instructions as they don't teach you to sew, they assume you already know construction techniques and are just providing you a designer garment pattern. I love them, they are the bulk of my me made wardrobe. I love your dress and you look amazing in it x love from Melbourne, Australia
I don’t think the free pattern is well explained on their website. I met a woman at the fabric shop who loves Style Arc patterns too and didn’t know about the bonus patterns. She has missed a lot of patterns in the year she has been sewing Style Arc patterns.
Thank you! Yes I saw the free pattern but neither of them tickled my fancy so decided to pass on it this time. Hopefully next time there will be one I like the look of 😊
Welcome to Style Arc. You made a lucky first choice because this instructions are positively verbose compared to their older ones which are half a side of A4 or less. I love their patterns and you can rely on them if you are looking to recreate a style because they have a big range. I prefer to have concise instructions. Love your dress - I would have passed it by but it looks stunning in real life!
Ruan, your dress is very nice. I’ve tried several Style Arc patterns. They’re getting easier to figure out now that I have a few under my belt. Their style keeps me coming back. I consider them classic with a modern twist.
The stitch line is where you put tailor tacks (takes ages), then take the pattern pieces off, then baste, then fit and adjust. This was how I was taught in the olden days. Even now I am nervous when I don't put the tacks in or draw in the sewing line (depending on type of fabric). I believe you can use one of those wheel thingies also, but I have never used that..Love the dress.
The dress with the fabric is so stunning! Love the little detail, that you buttons match the pinkish dots. Beautiful! (and a bit jealous of the fabric :D) Happy Sewing
A new sub vie, here. Your dress is gorgeous and the print is so perfect for the Palmer dress. I recently discovered Style Arc and made the Palmer and can’t stop wearing it. So comfortable and such a relaxing sew! I’ve now purchased six hard-copies in the last four months. I love tracing patterns and not comfortable with pdf patterns yet. I’ve got to hop in over to StaceyJ to see her make. That woman is so funny but keeps me watching. Thank you for sharing😊✂️🪡🧵👗❤
Well done looks fab! There'll be no stopping you now lass! All that style arc back catalogue available to you now with no fear! (And they've got 25% off just now!)🎉 I often download the single size ( then they give you the one each side )
From memory, yes it is cheaper to buy a single size. Am a fan ( though sometimes slightly apprehensive) of Style Arc patterns. I think the stitching line is shown on the pattern pieces, as Style Arc are used to produce patterns for commercial companies, this way the sewer has all the information to hand. I seem to spend a long time sometimes finding details of the seam allowance…. May have to make that dress now😀
Your dress is fabulous, looks gorgeous on you.I love Style Arc patterns. Like the direct instructions & coloured line diagram. The sizing is very consistent across the patterns too.❤
Definately a fan of Style Arc patterns but I'm an Aussie! I love watchin Stacey, she does have a wealth of knowledge. I wish Style Arc would provide a projector file but their designs are terrific. Love your dress not one I have yet! They do have a specila on atm too.
Your dress is smashing, Ruan! It seems perfect for our hot summer days here in South Carolina. Thanks for your comments on using viscose twill for this dress. I’ll definitely be giving it a try. When you said the instructions had five pages, my first thought was: Wow, they have really improved recently! Thank you, Style Arc! I will be giving SkillShare a try, too. The courses you’ve shown are amazing. I’ve been sewing for a long time, and I still like to learn new techniques. I’ve been wanting to learn Canva, too, so go me! Thank you for sharing all the information you did today. 😘
Love your dress. I bought the Zalia dress pattern by Style Arc and I made the dress version with round neck and I look hideous in it so I’ve turned it into a pair of Bailee shorts by Tesutti fabrics. 😂. I might try the ‘v’ neck version as I think it will suit me better. For info, I’ve also used the sharpie trick too. 🤷🏼♀️
Love your dress Ruan. Great job with the pattern matching/placement down the front 👏 kudos to your youngest on choice of buttons 👌 Re RUclips editing etc- I love your "fly by the seat of your pants" approach. I don't do vlogs (i just watch them). The thought of setting up the camera, lighting, editing etc, scares the bejaysus outta me! 😮😂
Hi Ruan. Love your make. I too am a fan of Style Arc patters and if you have a knowledge of garment construction, you should be fine with their patterns (as you have found out☺️). Also just want to say thank you as I used your discount code the other day for a Rainbow Fabrics order which should arrive today 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love your dress, it’s stunning! I’m sitting here watching in a style arc pixie dress thinking must make another. I’ve made quite a few style arc patterns now and only one really had me scratching my head ( the Eileen dress ) but that’s when that weird coloured construction diagram with all the arrows came to the rescue and helped me get my head round it…😊😊😊
Style Arc patterns are absolutely good if you have done a bit of sewing before, don`t be hesitant about the instructions, they are sufficient. There is a gigantic array of styles and SA has become a definite favorite of mine. Just go for it! Your dress is lovely Ruan!
I love Style Arch patterns! I’ve made quite a few. I love their Ponte pants! I’ve made like 5 pairs and wear them constantly. I’ve had no problems with any Style Arch instructions and yes, they have improved their instructions. You look so stylish in your Palmer dress! That fabric is just perfect. You look like you just stepped out of a fashion magazine. I’m with you on the sew lines. No clue. But I just love Style Arc’s esthetic. Great job Ruan!❤
The stitch line for Style Arc is also an indicator of that seams allowance. I measure and make a note, especially around the neck. Sounds like they put that information on your instructions, but not always n the older patterns. Am a fan of Style Arc, their drafting is one of the best I sew. Love a good shirt dress, don’t have that one, but do have others. Yours is amazing.
Ruan, the dress suits you beautifully, the style as well as the colour☺️ I am so glad you are happy with it, another successful make. I have been eyeing that pattern, now a definite on my to make list. 😊 I have sewed a couple Style Arc patterns, the stitch line is very helpful, when you keep it with your cut pieces, to do a double check when you are ready to sew that particular pattern piece
I’m a new subscriber and am enjoying your videos. Way back when I first started sewing, (before indie patterns) the stitch line was printed on patterns. You look so lovely in your beautiful dress! I’m looking forward to seeing Stacy’s shirt dress and to more of your videos, too. Happy sewing, Ruan!
Got to push outside your comfort zone, it feels great after you’ve accomplished it! Dress is fantastic😊, off to check out Stacey’s now, which will of course will be fabulous too!
Welcome to the Style Arc world!! LOL with the posing pockets!! So true 😂😂😂😂. I have started to omit pockets on some garments and guess what??? I am not missing them 😱. The dress is lovely and really suits you. Great round up of the pattern. Made a lot of Style Arc patterns and like them but the instructions do take a little more concentration and the older ones would seriously challenge beginners. Cannot explain the stitch line either - Atelier Jupe do it too. Irritates me. Off to watch Stacey now - love her channel too. 😊. Happy Sewing. Lynne
Oh my Lordy me! That dress looks so flippin’ gorgeous on you. The style and fabric are perfect for you. I’ve definitely used sharpie pens to cover snags, that’s their job right? 🤣 😎😍
I am glad you like Style Arc patterns. The instructions are a bit more of an order of assembling rather than how-to. But seeing is a lot of problem solving and there are tons of videos online now to help. I think you are very lucky to live in Yorkshire. I was in the city of York in 1999. I loved it there. New subscriber from Canada
Fabulous dress Ruan, and is gorgeous on you. Olly has the best taste in buttons🥰 I’ve never made a Style Arc pattern and it might be a while before I do!🤔
Good luck with your skillshare classes Ruan. I know you will keep your authentic nature that we all love along with giving us great sewing ideas. I will stick with the Indy patterns that give me great tutorials and plenty of detailed instructions. xx Karen
I have loads of style arc patterns .love them .they always turn out a great fit for my size 16 ..style arc do lots of tutorials on their RUclips page if you get stuck with a problem …looks gorgeous on you Ruan …you will wear this a lot xxx
Hi Ruan, I am slightly obsessed with this make as I just love the pattern and fabric choice. It looks amazing on you❤. I have made a few Style Arc patterns in the past and not had any problems but they have been pretty simple makes. I have been a bit nervous about trying something more involved, but now I may give it a go, thank you😃
Your dress came out so lovely! 😍 I've only made one style arc pattern before (the Keith vest) and I chose it because it looked simple enough where I could sew it up with minimal instructions. I found it to be great and not so intimidating. I think I would def try more of their patterns, but make sure that I know the techniques required, just in the case the instructions aren't too detailed.
This dress looks beautiful on you. The fabric is gorgeous and your construction is very professional looking. You are overly critical of details we can't even see! I promise no one else is going to notice the flaws you see :) I think we're all the same about our finished garments but you should be super proud of this. I do agree about maybe leaving out the pockets next time - just doesn't need them unless you want them, and it's so chic I wouldn't want to carry anything in the pockets that messed with the drape.
HI Ruan! I have a whole binder of wonderful patterns from Style-Arc. Ask me how many I've made. None! I bought them when I was new to sewing 4 years ago, and once I started looking at them, I had no idea what they were talking about! So they've been on my "maybe one day' shelf. Your video has made me want to re-visit my patterns and, as I've heard some of the UK vloggers say, crack on with them! Thank you!
Love this. There is no way I would have taken the time to pattern match the front, and you've done an amazing job! And I've done the sharpie trick, and it works!
Your shirtdress looks fabulous - it really suits you and the fabric is amazing. I'm a huge Style Arc fan. I hardly make anything else - they just have something for every level of sewer and look fashionable. I like the brief instructions. Like you said it's get down to business and sew your seam. The pattern piecing diagram on the print out makes me think of The Sewing Bee where they animate the pattern challenge to show viewers how the pattern should come together. The only real problem I have ever had is with The Byron top - I ended up doing the "Burrito" method [watched a You Tube demonstration] and did this instead of how the pattern suggested and it worked better I think. I personally adore the Sydney dress - the pockets are definitely too low in the original but other than that I love the design and have made 7. Can't wait to see what you make next. I'm currently doing The Blaire shirtdress in the pink fabric we got from BTPD [you made the Dovestone dress] Happy sewing 😎❤
With Style Arc when you buy a single size you get the pattern size below and the one above so if you don't fluctuate wildly and don't sew for others you still can do some grading or have the other sizes if you fluctuate up or down.
I was also going to say that. Of course you get them as different files so it's not easy to grade between sizes as you can when they are all printed on one sheet of paper. However if your weight fluctuates you can make a garment in 3 different sizes. 😀 I generally buy the multi-size ones but for some of my older patterns you could only buy single size at that time. Love Style Arc patterns !!!
Hi Ruan, that was a great vlog, your dress is beautiful and I love the fabric, I often wonder about Style Arc as they have some beautiful patterns, I may try an easy one and see what I think, thanks for sharing. ❤❤
Love the fabric and your pattern choice.I learnt to sew over fifty years ago with the big four pattern and you used to buy a sewing book of sewing terms to work with it. So,the Style Arc seem normal to me however all your tips and seeing the pattern was so helpful.
I love style arc patterns yes the instructions are brief but I have always found they are enough. I really love some of their trousers in particular, they go togher well and interesting. My favourite are the Milan.
Looks great! I knew you wouldn't have problems with Style Arc patterns. Now your sewing world is open to a vast catalogue of wonderful designs. As someone mentioned if you buy in pdf format direct from Style Arc you generally get the option for a 2nd (sort of pattern of the month) half price. Unfortunately not one to my taste so far. Happy sewing
I have made the Logan Shacket in a check wool blend. It is beautiful. I did get caught with the collar and collar stand having a smaller seam allowance though. I find Style Arc patterns to run large in sizing but this is better than too small! Love your Palmer shirt dress...might have to make one! Thanks for the inspiration. ❤
Love your dress and that fabric is gorgeous! I'm a huge fan of Style arc patterns - they fit me really well and the majority of my pants are Style arc - Elle pants in a knit/stretch (ponte) fabric are my favourite.
Your dress looks amazing. I love Style Arc patterns I have quite a bit of them as they were one of the first size inclusive companies I came across when I started garment sewing in 2020.
One of original Style Arc girls. Been buying them from the day they set up. I mostly make style arc as they fit my body so well. Block of butter figure here at 5’6-7”. Next try the Selina. It’s a beauty in floaty fabrics perfect for summer. Your dress looks amazing and I loved that fabric when you got it. So happy that you did this collab with the wonderful StaceyJ. Happy sewing from New Zealand. ❤
Love your make Ruan. You look amazing in it. I love Style Arc patterns. They are based here in Victoria, Australia just like me and I have been a fan for years. Their block seems to fit me really well without alterations. Did you know that they offer a free pattern which changes every month when you purchase a pattern? This has helped to build my catalogue of patterns. I am currently making the Casey coat and the Texas pants.Looking forward to your next vlog. Liz x
Stunning! I knew you would be fine with all those other makes under your belt. I have quite a few style arc patterns, just love the look of their garments. I haven’t made that many yet, but no problem with fit or instructions so far. Have fabric picked for the queue of style arc I want to make very soon 🤞😂
Your shirt dress is superb, the fabric is perfect for your complexion.I love to see you in red but green is perfect too. I have sewn 3 Style Arc patterns, the Montana dress which I love ,the Ethel top and the Ethel trousers. The trousers really made me giggle as they are right outside my comfort zone but having said that I have come to like them, they are a bit MC Hammer😂 and I am only 5’2.I think the patterns are well drafted and I do like the use of colour.Thank you for a really interesting video and I will now take a look at the dress chosen by your partner in crime😄 xxx
Beautiful dress. Love the pattern and fabric! I don't mind Style Arc patterns. Perhaps because I'm nearly as old as dirt and when I first started sewing the only patterns available were the big four patterns.
Love the dress and that fabric! Oh, and perfect buttons as well! The stitch line would be helpful if you wanted to add a wider seam allowance -- 1/4" is really scant, especially if you have a fabric that frays easily. I often make the seam allowance wider.
Hhaa great minds think alike.. I was sewing a bomber jacket today and some stitches near the zip were showing.. out came the permanent marker!!!! As for style arc patterns… the instructions and sizing leave a lot to be desired! I’m here in Australia and really struggle.. especially with the coloured lines and arrows as instructions!!! I love your dress… and your channel 🇦🇺
What a stunning dress! Love the colours, too. ❤ I don’t really like the patterns that come with both cut lines and stitch lines, but I think it is done so that you can use tracing paper and one of those tracing wheels to mark your seam allowance. It makes it easier to sew when you don’t have to always keep an eye on the markings on your plate. It can also be useful if the pattern uses different SA, so for instance 1,5 cm on the dress, but only 0,5 cm on the collar. At least I think Andrea described it so in one of her sewalongs for an Atelier Jupe patterns..

Oh hello lovely lady 👋🏼. Stacey is an amazing seamstress. You just be very proud 😊
What a lovely dress! Don’t change your ‘wing it’ manner too much! I love it and it allows your fabulous personality to shine through ❤
Thank you so much x
Your bold fabrics are LOVELY!
Love Style Arc!!! Great designs ❤

Having the seam line is so useful if you need to do any alterations to the pattern, saves drawing it in yourself. Your dress looks fab!
Ahhh. I see!
Love the dress Ryan !

I do the sharpie trick on my fabrics AND my van wheels - when I’ve curbed it - it WORKS!

Thank you. Yes I must admit I do love a good independent pattern to hold my hand 🤣
I have loads of style arc patterns .love them .they always turn out a great fit for my size 16 ..style arc do lots of tutorials on their RUclips page if you get stuck with a problem …looks gorgeous on you Ruan …you will wear this a lot xxx
Thank you! Can’t wait to try another now!
Spot on ❤ xx
Thank you!
Love this, gorgeous fabric and pattern, perfect match.❤❤
Thank you! 😊
That dress is perfect for you, the style suits and the colour is perefect for you!
Oh thank you!
Hi Ruan, I am slightly obsessed with this make as I just love the pattern and fabric choice. It looks amazing on you❤. I have made a few Style Arc patterns in the past and not had any problems but they have been pretty simple makes. I have been a bit nervous about trying something more involved, but now I may give it a go, thank you😃
Thank you Jane! I’ll definitely be making more!
Love it! Saw it on insta earlier! It looks amazing!
Aww thanks 🤩
Love it looks amazing great colour well done 😊😊
Thanks so much 😊
Your dress came out so lovely!
That's a great idea! X
Thank you so much ☺️
Thank you!
Yay! Go crack on! You can do it 😊
@@theyorkshiresewgirl 😆
Love this. There is no way I would have taken the time to pattern match the front, and you've done an amazing job! And I've done the sharpie trick, and it works!
Thank you. I didn’t pattern match 🤫 🤣
@@theyorkshiresewgirl What a perfectly happy accident. It looks perfect!
Oooh I like the Blaire pattern. It’s gorgeous!
I love style arc patterns,I have made a few your’s looks fabulous
Thank you!
Ah so if you get one single size you get 3 sizes but on different sheets of paper and not together?
@theyorkshiresewgirl yes, I believe they come as separate files which is not really great for grading.
Love this Ruan. It looks amazing. Will definitely be looking at Style Arc patterns from now on 🩷❤️
Yay 🥳
Hi Ruan, that was a great vlog, your dress is beautiful and I love the fabric, I often wonder about Style Arc as they have some beautiful patterns, I may try an easy one and see what I think, thanks for sharing. ❤❤
Yes great idea. Start with a simple one and work your way up 👍🏼
Love the fabric and your pattern choice.I learnt to sew over fifty years ago with the big four pattern and you used to buy a sewing book of sewing terms to work with it. So,the Style Arc seem normal to me however all your tips and seeing the pattern was so helpful.
Yes I think I’ve been very lucky and been using independent patterns so have had my hand held!
Tailored troosers and a Style Arc pattern all in one month! 😮❤👏👏👏 Style Arc troosers next? x
I know! What’s going on 🤣
I love style arc patterns yes the instructions are brief but I have always found they are enough. I really love some of their trousers in particular, they go togher well and interesting. My favourite are the Milan.
Ooh must go have a look at those!
Thank you! Yes I was the same. The free patterns didn’t float my boat on this occasion x
Thank you! Yes I’d maybe make the seam allowance on my next collar a bit larger!
Love the dress..so pretty.. long ago I got a tiny spot of bleach on my black pants.. Sharpie to the rescue
Yay! I knew my boy’s sharpie kit would come in handy one day 🤣
Love your dress and that fabric is gorgeous! I'm a huge fan of Style arc patterns - they fit me really well and the majority of my pants are Style arc - Elle pants in a knit/stretch (ponte) fabric are my favourite.
Oh thank you!
Your dress looks amazing. I love Style Arc patterns I have quite a bit of them as they were one of the first size inclusive companies I came across when I started garment sewing in 2020.
Yes their sizing is very good 👍🏼
@theyorkshiresewgirl I am also very much a fan of the colour-coded size lines and wish every indie pattern company would do that!!
Thank you. Style Arc have a lot of fans which is good to see 😊
Love your make Ruan. Liz x
Yes! When I bought this I didn’t think I’d make the free patterns so left it on this occasion. I’ll defo be buying more though 😊
Stunning! I knew you would be fine with all those other makes under your belt. I have quite a few style arc patterns, just love the look of their garments. I haven’t made that many yet, but no problem with fit or instructions so far. Have fabric picked for the queue of style arc I want to make very soon 🤞😂
He he. I’m definitely going to give more of them a try now ☺️
❤❤❤
The dress looks great on you. I have a few style arc patterns, and if I make this dress I will remember to lower the pockets. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I’d make the pockets higher as they were too low 👍🏼
@@theyorkshiresewgirl okay
The dress really suits you.
Thank you!
He he. The MC Hammer comment made me 🤭
Beautiful dress. Love the pattern and fabric! I don't mind Style Arc patterns. Perhaps because I'm nearly as old as dirt and when I first started sewing the only patterns available were the big four patterns.
Old as dirt made me chuckle 🤭
Big fan of Style Arc. Your dress looks amazing Ruan - I’ve not actually tried this one so might pick it up in the next sale.
Can definitely see you in this one honey 😍
Love the dress and that fabric! Oh, and perfect buttons as well!
The stitch line would be helpful if you wanted to add a wider seam allowance -- 1/4" is really scant, especially if you have a fabric that frays easily. I often make the seam allowance wider.
Ahhh makes total sense! Thank you ☺️
Hhaa great minds think alike..
Sharpie to the rescue 🤣
Style Arc pockets are always so low!!!😂 looks great on you
Oh are they? I’ll make note of that for future makes!
What a stunning dress! Love the colours, too. ❤
I don’t really like the patterns that come with both cut lines and stitch lines, but I think it is done so that you can use tracing paper and one of those tracing wheels to mark your seam allowance.
Yes. Absolutely this Karen!
The stitch line is helpful for when we need to making adjustments to the pattern, so we don't have to draw it!
Ah gotcha!
