- Erik Voss is back with a new breakdown on HBO Max's The Last Of Us, based off of the highly successful video game by Naughty Dog. The show is helmed by the same creators as Chernobyl and stars TV's favorite dad Pedro Pascal as Joel and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Episode 2 introduces us to the clickers and we sadly have to say goodbye to Tess, played by the fabulous Anna Torv.

The stuffed giraffe isn't just a nod to the giraffe scene... It is a nod to the fact that we see the exact same giraffe plushies THROUGHOUT both games in multiple locations: Sarah's room, a little girl that's playing with one in the QZ, an open suitcase outside a high school in Bill's Town etc)
The game has a giraffe motif going on, and it represents innocence, or its loss.
Achara explanation about "Ibu" is on point!, Ibu means mother and also means Mam.. or Mrs. in a respectable daily basics conversation.
She is Thai after all. She would know something like that.
Even though I miss the spores as a secondary hazard in this adaptation I actually LOVE that it was replaced by the mycelium “network”. It essentially makes entire fungal growth areas in a massive silent alarm.
The visual effects, makeup and production design in this show are phenomenal.

For what I know:
If you are in a open field,you can not only heard a noise from the distance because of the echo but also you will have a bigger idea of which direction that noise came from.
So the clicker might have a idea that the noise was from the end of the hall,but once this got closer,stopped hearing the echo for being that close and didn't heard Joel's movements cause it's clicking was louder.
After that Joel and Ellie were covered by a surface,and sound travels like waves after all,so if there's something in the middle the clicker will take longer to find.
Out of that,most of the plants on the ground does communicate with other plants and if there's any type of plague, other plants receive the signal to create defenses.

I personally love a movie called 'the cured' which is a independent movie with Elliot Page on it.
It also deviates from 'zombies' but in a different way.
I actually think not many people has watched that movie.
Which is a shame because it makes me cry.
13:15 It's part of what makes things like culture, and even personal relationships and tender feelings towards each other so precious. It's the fact that it is fragile, and easily destroyed, that makes it so precious and worth preserving.
I think the bottled water to brush your teeth thing is relevant for tourists because there are bacteria that Thais are used to but not tourists that come from countries where the water is exceptionally clean.
So yeah I was advised to use bottled water by someone from Thailand because I would get sick (not life threatning) but the body does need to adjust.
It works in the video game because that’s how they work and keep you full of adrenaline, but for the sake of realism in a show that’s going to such extremes to be grounded and realistic, having the main characters take down group after group of armed military and guerrilla would be action movie cliche that I agree would hurt this show. So I’m absolutely glad they are not going there and replicating those sequences from the gameplay and instead giving more character moments and much better introduction to the different levels of threats they are facing.

Aw thanks! Indonesia is near and dear to my heart because I lived there from the age of 3 until 11. I have many happy memories of growing up there but sadly I lost a lot of the language. I bet I could pick it back up again pretty quickly again if I put my mind to it. Maybe I should watch more Indonesian content 🤔

In regards to the characters walking into a event that already happened instead of participating in it.
At least in episode 2, its not much different from the video game. The fireflies were already dead in the game as well, just how they died was changed and instead of FEDRA chasing its a horde of the infected using the newly introduced cordyceps "hive mind" concept. So it really didn't bothered me too much. Overall I enjoyed the episode. In the moment I don't think I enjoyed the kiss of death, I was hoping for something more aggressive but after listening to the New Rockstars take on it I can accept it. Tess being already infected makes sense for it not to be as aggressive.
As I understand it, there are about 600 species in the Ophiocordyceps genus, and each one affects a specific insect. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis (the latter word being the species name), perhaps the most notorious one, infects the ants we often see images & videos of.
The epidemiologist on the talk show, Dr. Neuman, talked about the possibility of Cordyceps evolving.
When Ratna looks at the microscope, she clocks that the sample is from the Ophiocordyceps genus, but couldn't identify it and was a bit confused as to why it was prepared in the way of a sample derived from a human being.
This shows that yes, Ophiocordyceps DID evolve and develop a new species that specifically targets people. Probably why we haven't seen other animals being infected. It's possible that the fungus could further evolve, but as of right now, it hasn't. And animals like dogs or cats etc aren't affected.
Also, as for the spores, in a real-world context, the spores would have already infected everyone including Joel because it would spread. In the game, it's always just underground and in place, mostly.
Joel said Tess was from Detroit, so her clicker family is probably back there
I like the changes, the human that kill will turn up as in the trailers there's the armoured car with Run written on the snow plough so they will come later for sure!
It would be awesome if they kept Tess's background as a sidestory. Knowing how she is, I really wanna see how it played out. We need a director's cut!

I think the lack of human Vs human fighting is to make it more impactful when they encounter cannibals, slavers, etc

Actually In the game the Fireflies soldiers were also dead when Joel, Tess And Ellie arrived. So we didn't miss the action. However what was changed was Tess' sacrifice, which I liked better in the show. In the Game a group of Fedra rushes to the building, so Tess' sacrifices herself to "buy some time" and die in the shoot out with FEDRA, but in the end Joel kills off FEDRA by himself anyway so her sacrifice didn't help Joel that much, and mostly serves as an emotional impact. In the show the FEDRA soldiers are replaced with runners which made it more terrifying and her sacrifice pretty much killed most, if not all the infected.
Agreed -- the show improved on Tess' sacrifice big time.
Druckmann & Mazin said that they WROTE that Tess flashback, but they never shot it. So there is no footage.

I’ve played for a LONG time but I always had this question: Since the Infected are still (technically) alive and there was a vaccine, what would happen if you gave it to let’s say…a Bloater or a Clicker? Would it not have a effect or would the person come back briefly, then immediately succumb to the massive changes their body went through?
There's probably a threshold that's crossed once you become a clicker. It's taken over the entirety of the brain at that point... I mean, in all probability, it takes over your brain early. So anyone who has turned probably can' t be saved from a vaccine.
By "vaccine" I assume you mean a general form of post-exposure treatment (PEP). Vaccines by definition need to be administered before any infection has taken hold. For instance, there's no cure for rabies, but there's a vaccine (which needs to be administered before any exposure), and a very effective PEP regimen as long as it's administered shortly after exposure (no more than a few days).
Clickers and bloaters probably already had much of their brain destroyed. The human host is dead, cordyceps produce chemicals to keep the host from decomposing, and may be using the host's neural pathways to trigger motor functions. They're not "alive" human host with an extreme infection, they're corpses puppetered by the cordyceps. And if treatment exists and appled to them, all it'd do is killing the cordyceps and leaving behind a corpse.
The things that I don't understand about infected is
1 The fungal armor that clickers and bloaters develop. I've never heard of hard fungus, particularly bullet resistant armor
Granted, I don't know much about fungus but I've never heard of it
2 if spores isn't a part of these infected then do bloaters still throw spore bombs that can infect others? Are the bombs made of tendrils instead of spores now?
3 If clickers hunt by sound, couldn't they use sound as a weapon, like flashbangs to stun them
4 If you kill an infected by beating them to death like you do in the game, can't that infect you?

Wouldnt it make sense for a water cooler to have the blue handle broken off tho? the red one is for hot water and its not like the cooler would be working long enough to still produce hot water, so it doesnt really make sense for that handle to be used anyway.
Re: skipped action scenes.
I think within the structure of ep2, it was the right choice to skip the capitol building fight. Cuz the clicker scene at the museum should be the action setpiece for this episode. The action at the state house isn't narratively important. Foregoing the actions allows the show to focus on the dramatic weight of that scene.
And thematically i think it works better that it was Tess vs zombies instead of Tess vs FEDRA at the end. It reflects her new found hope to find a cure and set things right, which is a hope against the cordyceps/pandemic.

I guess it's a good thing Joel, Tommy, & Sarah didn't eat any pancakes or cookies in episode 1 given in the show the fungus seems to originate from flour.

The change about tess's death was better for me. They focused more on the clickers and that was cool
how was the stalker that play tendril hockey with tess, her son that she locked in a basement? when we see that walker wake up from the sleeping nest from earlier in the episode
Not seeing the shoot outs and only the aftermath: 1.) Takes that aspect away from the series and leaves it for the game, b/c the series concentrates more on the story versus hitting the A or B button. It shows Joel in action only when it needs to for the story. 2.) I believe the scenes of them showing up and everyone's dead give a sense of hopelessness and despair. 3.) It drives home the fact that surviving Humanity is too good at killing each other while the Fungus thrives and multiplies.
A few notes on the echolocation of the clickers, mind you these are only my own notes and understanding of it even from the game. The "brain power" pf the clickers is nowhere close anymore to a normal human, (or even a bat for that matter), a good portion of the brain is consumed, I imagine the only parts remaining would be the only parts the fungus would need, like the parts responsible for hearing and some measure of connection with remaining muscle tissues. So it wouldn't be able to a complex degree of echolocation like a bat, even the sounds it makes for it are very primitive because it's working with a human body that was not made to function like that. So I don't think it's in the realm of possibility to imagine it has memory to map anything for more than a few moments at a time for one, they're basically aimless most of the time and unless there is significant new stimuli in their surroundings they tend to be quite stationary too, roaming in a very limited area (from observation of the game behaviour). Also on the scene where they're crouching you might notice they tend to move in bursts to match the noisier clicks the clicker is making, I do not know if this was intentional, but I have noticed it for every rewatch of the episode so far.
I love these breakdown reactions could it makes me want to play the game more and more with ever new thing I learn. Spoilers don't bother me as long as it's not something that would defeat the purpose of playing it. Like spoiling the game ending cause that would be the only total A-hole move that could ruin it for me. I'd have to wait at least 5 to 10 years to forget it. That's not an issue cause it will be a while before I can play it anyway. Enjoyed the video and the reaction 👍👍✌out.

I think the fighting with other humans is to help the gamer with game play and learning skills, which is less of a concern for the TV series…
I'm fine with the changes they've made. If you try and translate the game directly it's going to be impossibly long. When you pare the game down to its most basic elements, they hit on pretty much everything important. Also, they've done a great job with casting, in terms of finding ppl who can embody their character (especially Pedro Pascal). If you've played the game, there's a lot of stuff to pick up on. Can't say I'm a fan of Part 2, so I was a bit skeptical to see how this would turn out, but it's only been 2 episodes so far. Hopefully they'll keep it interesting
I too didn't enjoy part 2 nearly to the extent of part 1.
Perhaps some surprising 'creative liberties' shall be taken for the better when/if adapting part 2 to this show.

Video games inherently have a TON of action (aka killing) in order for the player to have something to do. Sometimes, if not often, it doesn't even make sense. In cut scenes characters care about life and killing a person is such a big deal but you the player have killed x150 henchmen already as that character. Adapting a video game to TV means removing nearly all of that needless violence and killing unless it is important to the story.
Also, the amount of time spent on big action scenes that just fill time and ammo expended by the characters when in this world ammo is so incredibly hard to come by and therefore precious, makes having action like in the games a non-starter. Ammo is too rare to have big shootouts with 20 military soldiers, the show doesn't have the screen-time to spare for big action scenes like that and that much violence and killing harms the connection we have with the characters. The impact of when Joel or Ellie (or anyone) kills a human is x100000 times less when they've already killed 35 people in the first 6 episodes.
Oh, and after a certain point our suspension of disbelief as to the characters we are watching surviving all of these big shootouts goes down and down to the point where we are rolling our eyes that they keep coming out alive. That harms the story of the show as well. Avoiding that helps keep stories believable.

It would definitely lose impact if Joel was going on killing sprees in every episode. That's something that is required in a game for gameplay purposes but a TV show has to use it sparingly. This is why adaptations are difficult and videogame adaptations especially. They are doing a great job so far.
In the game you have unlimited amo and resources if you play on normal difficulty, in here of course there isn’t going to be as much action because it would be impossible. Gameplay wise they throw a lot of action because they don’t want everything to be storytelling with cutscenes. Imagine starting TLOU and then you get the whole day of Sarah in cutscenes, people will stop playing and that’s why the games starts with a faster pacing. In here it’s the opposite and they can spent more time with storytelling. Characters wouldn’t have as much resources and would want to avoid every confrontation they can. I’ve like every change they have done, I am liking a lot of the change scenes more than in the game to be honest so I don’t mind at all. I’m pretty sure we will have more action when we get to Henry and Sam, with the cannibals and the hospital. Right now it’s more about world building and exposition and I am fine with that, I’ve love every single scene.
As someone who didn’t play nor plans to play the game…. This adaptation is great!
Like most video game adaptations It's even better when you haven't played the games.

The action is more earned and justified this way and, whereas in the game you are playing as the character, in the show; you are seeing what's happening as a viewer from an outside perspective. Killing all of these infected in droves would be cool but make you emotionally numb to the point where you wouldn't care about what's going down in the moment and the risk to Joel and Ellie.
