As a driving game fan that's a little on hardcore side, my guess on why, I believe people want to get a genuine feel of driving or racing in a car without having to actually buy something like an F1 or a rally car(I don't think it's even possible). As you know, there's definetetly less involvement when you use keyboard or gamepads.
If anyone is waiting on their Amazon pre-order still, a company called "Beach Audio" has a few available, they shipped mine today! Much better than waiting until mid-late December for Amazon.
Before someone reads my first post and thinks I'm whining because manufacturers didn't take my specific desk into account, that's not what I'm saying. I was merely pointing out the difference in approach. Logitech was aware that a desk is a common mounting point and created an elegant solution. I was torn between Thrustmaster and Fanatec but because of the necessity for a platform to mount the TH8RS, it seems the decision may have made itself. Would have liked the choice though.
glad to hear that it works with the G27, original shifter threw out the reverse gear or something, all I know is reverse doesn't work, and with a few rubber bands I can easily make it a handbrake
@slot962 in real life you can still be pushing the throttle while changing gears, in GT5 you cant. while drifting it means you can't do a good smooth gear change mid drift, like powering out of a corner going from 2nd to 3rd you'll have to back all the way off the throttle to change gear, in real life i would rev it while shifting so it has more kick going into the next gear and holds the drift. also watch the video at 3:13 and you'll see Darin have the issue trying to heel-toe down shift
Fantastic review! Still can't quite decide on one. I'd love one, but i don't know if i can justify spending that much on something while at university.. I understand that some of the high end equipment is aimed at people with dedicated "rigs", but for me this presents a problem. I do not have enough space for a dedicated racing setup and a general purpose setup for my PC. I have a desk with a slide-out platform for my mouse and keyboard. The beauty of the G25 is that I can have it mounted and still have clearance to slide out that platform. All the other wheels require more clearance and with the TH8RS I'd actually need a specific platform.
@i333r 1) Where did I state that the WHEEL had no GT branding? Tell me where it says GT on the shifter... 2) Did you miss the part where the shifter does not connect to the wheel, it connects via it's own USB port. Most PS3 games do not support 3 seperate input devices for Player 1. The only reason it works with GT5 is because they updated the game to support it, as it is an add-on for their official wheel.
GT5 on the PS3 only supports 2 controller input devices, one sixaxis and one additional device. The game must recognise the wheel and the shifter as one device despite the fact they use seperate USB ports. If you try and use it with a G27 or a GT2, it will not recognise the shifter as it is a third input device. This shifter is designed primarily for use with the PC. Only the wheel bears GT branding, the shifter doesn't. I'm surprised it works with GT5 at all.
@killerbng This is a standalone shifter, so you can leave the g27 shifter plugged in and use the buttons, put it at the left of the wheel and use all the buttons, put the TH8RS at the right of the wheel and use it as your shifter, problem solved
+sheppardpat47 Obviously you don't work on cars like my dad does nor do you drive a standard. You would not argue that I'm wrong. I drive a 5-speed VW Jetta. The gears go up to the number 5. Reverse is a gear but it's not counted with 1st to 5th gear. If the case was to count reverse then they would call it a 6-speed not label it a 5-speed. Check the VIN number of a car, it tells you everything about it.
but its 8 gear shifter because its fully customisable shifter, so you can change this reverse gear to 8 gear. its not real car it´s a shifter you can´t compare them because you cant script real car but you can script this shifter. sorry my english but youre not right.
Shaun, you missed a point we all wanted to know. What's the difference between really loose tension and very stiff tension settings? You didn't show us this. =/ Also the button under the plate lets the shifter's firmware know which plate is attached, and thus which mode to use. It is not just for orientation. So no magic present. I dislike the hollow metalic sound a bit though. =/
for anyone wondering if it will work with the g27, g25 etc it will. the shifter is a usb and it is a plug and play :D (just check if ur game allows more than one usb connection)
@equoowe Well said. I have recently started using the clutch in GT5, once again. I'm now used to it, but it's hardly realistic. One of the few areas where GT5 falls short of realism. It's not hard to heel-toe, as long as you depress the clutch all the way before moving the gear stick. If you don't, the game will force neutral.Hopefully, PD will address this in a later update.
You probably have to compensate for something, don't you? What Shaun lacks in size he sure makes up in his driving. And unlike some reviews on the net, he actually knows his stuff very well. Ever looked at the size of most F1 drivers...?

I have to assume the clutch is not required when using sequential mode? Even with the G25, I enjoyed sequentially shifting with the shifter instead of the paddles at times.

@11BMWpower11 It is standalone. So it does not work together with the wheel. It would even work of you are steering with a keyboard. ;) So yes it would work. Just not on the xbox.
im doing this but i made an aluminium cutout with one of my schools mill's and used a lathe to machine out a custom weighted shifter knob. and because my joystick is so old im using cabinet clasps that hold the doors closed to keep it in gear.
Looking at the Clubsport shifter's mounting method I think that should work with my desk (if I remove the keyboard platform) but in the case of the TH8RS it would have been nice if they had considered not everyone has a dedicated racing setup.
I had the chance to see it before realesing date in Gitex... it is so realistic ,better than the one I have with my Logitech G25 you can use it with G25 on pc only

I love that its got the same fitting as a standard cars gear knob, dislike that fake/ cheap sounding 'Click' it makes when ever it goes into gear. I do refuse to pay that much for a shifter which doesn't have xbox 360 support. Why has no-one made a multi platform gearbox which looks like its come from a car, with a leather gaiter, a realistic size, and most importantly, feels like your literally changing gear. A cars gearbox doesn't click, it feels like your pushing mechanical gears into place.

ive had this shifter since 2014, and i use it a lot, it does wear down, right now i have a lot of sloppiness to it in neutral, it goes way to easy into some gears now from all the use, so even though i spent $100 for it at the time, i think i got my use out of it, i will need to replace it with another soon!

Get a second hand G25. Mine has lasted for about 3 years of hard abuse. And i am not the first owner. My brother just bought a second hand G25. €130 and it works perfectly. Just save some cash ;) But i know i am getting a fanatec GT3RS with CSR elite pedals and CSR sfiters next :)
@Frankiew1993 G27 and I thought I have never changed it, until I tried the t500rs, I will not sell the G27, but there is much difference with the t500rs. It is more expensive, but better.
@killerbng IMO I got enough buttons on the wheel and rarely use the shiftter buttons. If I need the D pad, I just use a controller (PS3) and keyboard (PC) beside me. more easier to use though.

I dont think it will. You will need a porshe shifter from fanatec i'm afraid. To run on the PS3 or 360. I do believe that this shifter only works on the PS3 with a T500RS. I cant use it with my G25 on my PS3.

You can watch Jordan Tresson plays to RFactor with TH8RS during the "Mondial de la Simulation" in Paris. He is doing heel-toe down shift.

Can I just add, the T500RS has a changeable knob yes, but the G27 WILL accept Universal shift knobs.
I'm thinking of getting one for Assetto corsa. Those metal gates and long throw look just like the F40 shifter.

At first I thought that 150 was a bit much for this thing, but after watching the video, it is a fitting price.

It is standalone on the PC. So yes. No problem. For the PS3 you will need the t500RS.

Works with any wheel with PC. As said in the video it's just another USB device.
Personnally, I'll keep my DIY h-shifter... Much less expensive, and it's also rewarding to build it, plug it in and get it to work properly !
